sound doctrine

What makes him a known person of God? that he writes? that's no great claim, Hell has lots of writers.
Does he walk on water? heal the sick? raise the dead?
Hal Lindsey is another that has written plenty, which has largely turned out to be false.
Does he get a free pass on falsehood because he calls himself a man of God?

It's obvious you have yet to know who Eugene Peterson is. Why the sense of brotherhood and mercy is so easily replaced by repudiation and criticism is a sign that all is not well in the Body of Christ.

You are correct in that, I had no idea who or what he was until today. Dispite your misplaced anger, I haven't yet repudiated him, though I do criticize his style of translation. We do not help the unindoctrinated by making the language simplistic and vague.

I have no anger, but I am justified in feeling something about the misplaced criticism that many true believers who obey God as He calls them have to endure from the so-called Body of Christ they are a part of. It's just wrong, and I am certain God is not pleased.

I know many wonderful believers who, when they first came to Christ and found daily bible reading a rather foreign concept, rejoiced to have been able to cut their teeth, so to speak, on The Message in conjunction with accepted translations. While all new believers I come into contact with are carefully discipled, it is no big deal.

Well when one castigates a known believer for a paraphrase, which is something we do every day (hopefully) when we live out and share our faith with people, then there is something terribly amiss with the soul of one who does that. It is dissident behaviour.

I can not accept that. IF right now the Pope of the Roman Catholic Church said that "Jesus was not God" YOU personally would be all over that like syrup on pancakes!

IF Dr. Billy Graham said that Jesus was not the way to God YOU would burn up the internet rejecting that comment as would I.

Be real my sister! It is not about dissident behavior but instead what is the Bible truth we seek!

I was aware of his productions and as you did not repudiate him at all but commented on the really bad translation.

Well, frankly, what the Pope says really doesn't mean a whole lot to me no matter what it is...and of course, Billy Graham wouldn't ever say that.

Now that is sad. Seeing yet unable to see.

What I see is a man who has freedom in Christ has been able to use that freedom to bring us a good paraphrase of the bible as God has allowed Him to do, if not lead Him directly. It has nothing to do with spiritual blindness, but of course, if you choose to be closed to it, be my guest. But don't expect to be blessed for denigrating a brother---and a sister in Christ.

Oh, but I have been blessed and continue to be so. Just being able to expose the Word of God through conversations to others is more than I could ever have hoped for!!!!!!

Um..what's going on?

I dont think the massage bible should be used in place of scripture. Its just a paraphrase and a really bad one at that. Theres too much sloppiness in it, although of course, any book written thats based on the bible has some truth in it, but then , the Book of Mormon and the Koran had that too.

There is really no place for it, I mean, when people quote it as if its scripture that really concerns me. Its just one mans attempted translation. I laugh when I hear it, like the kiwi bible and the lolcat bible. To take it seriously is a bit nuts. I dont know if the translator had any new age agenda, but I do know he actually lied and said he knew Hebrew..he was just

It is fine to be used in conjunction with the bible version of your choice. It is NOT a bad paraphrase as paraphrases go, and is not comparable in the least to any of the Mormon "scriptures" or the Qur'an, and for shame to those who would do so. Peterson didn't set out to translate the bible, but to paraphrase it. When you understand the difference, perhaps the condescension and crass, "...is a bit nuts" will decrease.
