The Importance of Repentance

Discussion in 'Bible Study' started by freedom07, Aug 19, 2007.

  1. The Importance of Repentance

Sometimes when witnessing the word "Repent" may be left out, but it is very inportant in renewing one's soul. YHVH offers grace freely, but does this mean that forgiveness of our sinful heart should not be lifted up for cleansing?

  2. Just a couple of things:

-You probably don't always do this....but don't steal your doctrine from the Internet. Steal it from the Bible ;)

    -Do you mean YHWH?

-Could you rephrase your question? I understand the importance of repentance but I don't clearly see what you mean by "but does this mean that forgiveness of our sinful heart should not be lifted up for cleansing?" Could you elaborate please?

    Thanks.

  6. mathew .from then on jesus began to preach....."repent of your sins and turn to God,for the kingdom of heaven is near":D

  7. I believe there is a difference between repentance and forgiveness.

Repentance is when we ask for forgiveness and turn away from that sin. We may continue to struggle with that sin from time to time, but we never actually fall back into it full force.

Forgiveness is when we ask for forgiveness for a particular sin but continue to fall back into it full force. We sincerely ask for forgiveness each time (and are forgiven), but we somehow just can't seem to get total victory.

I beleive we cannot repent without being forgiven, but we can be forgiven without repenting.

I remember hearing a preacher say before that he kept struggling with this one particular sin. He never said what the sin was, but every time he committed that sin he would (almost immediately) ask God to forgive him. God would forgive him each time, but he continued commiting that sin. He would ask for forgiveness each time. After many times of asking for forgiveness for this same sin, God asked the preacher something like this – “Okay son! Are you repenting or do you just want forgiveness?†The preacher said he was confused at first, but soon realized that there is a difference between repentance and forgiveness.

What do some of you think?

  10. luke.."i have come to call not those who think they are righteous, but those who know they are sinners and need to repent"

  11. luke...i tell you again that unless you repent, you will perish, too.

  12. Someone has been doing his homework SC:D- it is by God's grace , the conviction of the Holy Spirit and in fact is the heart of God's will for us to come to repentance-

2Pe 3:9 The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance.
