DANIEL - A Verse by VERSE BIBLE STUDY

Daniel 11:18-19..............
"After this he shall turn his face to the coastlands, and shall take many. But a ruler shall bring the reproach against them to an end; and with the reproach removed, he shall turn back on him. Then he shall turn his face toward the fortress of his own land; but he shall stumble and fall, and not be found."

When the treaty with Egypt failed, Antiochus went about conquering islands along the coast of Asia Minor. He had a large fleet of ships and took contol of the Mediterranean including Rhodes, Samos, Colophon.

He shall turn back on him:
After the disappointing effort through the daughter Cleopatra, the king of the North would turn his efforts towards the coastlands – until he was stopped by one formerly under reproach, until he shall stumble and fall, and not be found.

He shall stumble and fall:
This was fulfilled when Antiochus III turned his attention towards the areas of Asia Minor and Greece. He was helped by Hannibal, the famous general from Carthage. But a Roman General, Lucius Cornelius Scipio, defeated Antiochus in Greece. Antiochus planned to humiliate Greece but was humiliated instead. He returned to his former regions, having lost all that he gained and died shortly after, just as Daniel said!

After this defeat Antiochus III had an inglorious end. Needing money badly for his treasury, he resorted to pillaging a Babylonian temple and was killed by enraged local citizens.

Daniel 11:20.............
"There shall arise in his place one who imposes taxes on the glorious kingdom; but within a few days he shall be destroyed, but not in anger or in battle."

There shall arise in his place
:
After the inglorious end of the king of the North, his successor would raise taxes and meet a soon end.

One who imposes taxes:
This was fulfilled in the brief reign of Seleucus III, the eldest son of Antiochus III. He sought to tax his dominion (including the glorious kingdom, the Holy Land) to increase revenues. His plan to pillage the Jerusalem temple was set aside when his ambassador had an angelic vision of warning.

Within a few days he shall be destroyed:
Means .....quick death after plundering the Temple to get money.
Seleucus III was assassinated, poisoned by his own tax collector Heliodorus.

Now We Come To The BAD GUY - Antiochus IV, known as Antiochus Epiphanes: A Vile Person.

Verse 21 The vile person comes to power.............

"And in his place shall arise a vile person, to whom they will not give the honor of royalty; but he shall come in peaceably, and seize the kingdom by intrigue."

In his place shall arise a vile person
:
The angel told Daniel that after the brief reign of the former king of the North, the next king would be a vile person.
He would not be recognized as royalty, but shall take power by intrigue.

This is "Antiochus Epihanes, the Illustrious One".
He ruled from 175 to 163 BC. All the verses from here ( vs 21 to 34) refer to this man.

In his place:
This was fulfilled in the successor of Seleucis III, named Antiochus IV. He did not come to the throne legitimately because it was strongly suspected that he murdered his older brother, the previous king. The other potential heir (the son of Seleucus III) was imprisoned in Rome.

He shall come in peaceably:
Apart from the murder of his older brother, Antiochus IV didn’t use terror to gain power. He used flattery, smooth promises and intrigue.
We see from the verses above that he rose to the throne through 'intrigue' taking it through a mixture of force and deception.
Take special note of the actions of this character for they point to a coming world leader in the last days who will do the same thing!

Clark Commentary says.......
“He flattered Eumenes, king of Pergamus, and Attalus his brother, and got their assistance. He flattered the Romans, and sent ambassadors to court their favour, and pay them the arrears of the tribute. He flattered the Syrians, and gained their concurrence.”

Antiochus IV took the title Epiphanes, meaning illustrious. Others derisively called him Epimanes, meaning madman. He was AN Antichrist in every way.

Daniel 11:22-24.............
"And with the arms of a flood shall they be overflown from before him, and shall be broken; yea, also the prince of the covenant.
And after the league made with him he shall work deceitfully: for he shall come up, and shall become strong with a small people.
He shall enter peaceably even upon the fattest places of the province; and he shall do that which his fathers have not done, nor his fathers' fathers; he shall scatter among them the prey, and spoil, and riches: yea, and he shall forecast his devices against the strong holds, even for a time."

With the help of the "ARMS" of his friends, Antiochus Epiphanes took over and broke his competitors. He also killed the high priest Onias and put Jason in his place.

But the agreement he made with Jason was broken when a wicked man named MENELAUS offered him more money than Jason had. THAT is the broken covenant in view here.

He shall come up:
Refers to Antiochus coming back from Rome where he had been a hostage for the payment of taxes laid on his father.

He shall stir up his power:
This was fulfilled when Antiochus Epiphanes carried on the feud between the dynasties but pretended friendship and alliance to catch them off guard. Despite massive efforts and epic battles, Antiochus Epiphanes did not stand, and his army was swept away.

The defeat of Antiochus Epiphanes at his second campaign against Egypt was important, because Egypt beat Antiochus with the help of Rome. At the end of it all, Antiochus Epiphanes and his kingdom were under the dominion of Rome.

In a famous battle, the Roman Navy defeated the navy of Antiochus Epiphanes. After the battle, a Roman general drew a circle around Antiochus in the dirt and demanded to know if he would surrender and pay tribute to Rome – and demanded to know before he stepped out of the circle. From that point on there was no doubt: Antiochus Epiphanes took his orders from Rome and was under Roman rule.

Those who eat of the portion of his delicacies shall destroy him:
This was fulfilled in the treachery against Anitochus IV by his own counselors.

Daniel 11:25............
"And he shall stir up his power and his courage against the king of the south with a great army; and the king of the south shall be stirred up to battle with a very great and mighty army; but he shall not stand: for they shall forecast devices against him."
Yea, they that feed of the portion of his meat shall destroy him, and his army shall overflow: and many shall fall down slain.
And both these kings' hearts shall be to do mischief, and they shall speak lies at one table; but it shall not prosper: for yet the end shall be at the time appointed."

Antiochus won this battle against Egypt, and Ptolemy was taken as a prisoner and Antiochus was crowned as the king of Egypt.

The he used various corrupt methods to turn away key men from Ptolemy (vs 25).

They had been fed by Ptolemy, were conquered by Antiochus and the result was the fall of Egypt.

The hearts of both men were evil and deceitful. They sat at the same table and claimed to love each other while both were planning on killing the other.

In the end, neither prospered with their lies. Antiochus had to surrender Egypt to Rome. He kept Palestine, & Phoenicia in the settlement and Ptolemy got nothing.

Daniel 11:27...........
"And both these kings' hearts shall be to do mischief, and they shall speak lies at one table; but it shall not prosper: for yet the end shall be at the time appointed."

For yet
.
The end of each will come only at the time definitely ordained by God for the consummation of His kingdom (Daniel 11:35). Man cannot hasten the events decreed by God’s providence. For an interesting commentary, read Isaiah 18:4-6.

"end shall be at the time appointed."
Now we are not able to discuss Predestination on CFS. That is NOT because it is not believed or that it is not a Bible doctrine.
It has to be done because it is one of those topics that normal people can not discuss on a civil level!

However, this Scripture is another one that definitely proves Predestination. God has already placed the time of the 2nd Coming of the Lord Jesus in stone in heaven. Only HE knows but the point is......there is a pre-determined time!

Daniel 11:28...............
"Then shall he return into his land with great riches; and his heart shall be against the holy covenant; and he shall do exploits, and return to his own land."

After he had conquered Egypt, Antiochus returned to Antioch carrying the spoils of Egypt with him. According to sources, there was great rejoicing in Jerusalem at that time because they had heard that he was dead. When Antiochus heard of their rejoicing, he turned on them like a rabid dog.

Daniel 11:29-30.........
"At the time appointed he shall return, and come toward the south; but it shall not be as the former, or as the latter.
30 For the ships of Chittim shall come against him: therefore he shall be grieved, and return, and have indignation against the holy covenant: so shall he do; he shall even return, and have intelligence with them that forsake the holy covenant.
31 And arms shall stand on his part, and they shall pollute the sanctuary of strength, and shall take away the daily sacrifice, and they shall place the abomination that maketh desolate."

Now it is extremely....extremely important that we stay focused at this point!

We are still breaking down Daniels prophecy which was yet in his future. We are focused on real time proven history at this point.
Antiochus tried a 2nd invasion of Egypt but this time he picked on the wrong guy. The Roman fleet met him 7 miles from Alexandria and defeated him. The Roman Senate had said that there was to be an end to this war and they circled Antiochus and demanded he give an answer before he could leave. He gave in to the Romans and left for home.

Remember old Jason? Jason was the one who was deceived by Antiochus and removed from the high priest position. Jason has by this time raised an army and marched into Jerusalem to take it from Menelaus.

This is when Antiochus came against Judea with great fury. He overran the city killing 40,000 Jews and took at least that many as slaves. He desecrated the temple by
1. boiling pigs flesh and sprinkling blood and broth over the alter and the Holy of Holies.
2. He stopped Jewish worship and
3. dedicated the temple to the god, Jupiter.
4. He took away the daily sacrifices of the Jews.
5.He stopped the observance of the Sabbath.

This is what is commonly called the "DESECRATION of ABOMINATION".

It was these actions that led to the revolt of the Jews headed by the Maccabees which took FOUR years.

Following this he died in a war with the Persians.

Daniel 11:32-35
"Those who do wickedly against the covenant he shall [ a]corrupt with flattery; but the people who know their God shall be strong, and carry out great exploits. 33 And those of the people who understand shall instruct many; yet for many days they shall fall by sword and flame, by captivity and plundering. 34 Now when they fall, they shall be aided with a little help; but many shall join with them by [ b]intrigue. 35 And some of those of understanding shall fall, to refine them, purify them, and make them white, until the time of the end; because it is still for the appointed time."

His heart shall be moved against the holy covenant
:
When the vile person returned to his land, he would attack the land, people, and the temple of Israel. It will be a time of great courage and great treachery among the people of God.

So he shall do damage and return to his own land:
This was fulfilled when Antiochus Epiphanes returned from Egypt, bitter from defeat. He vented his anger against Jerusalem, which was already shaken because Antiochus sold the office of High Priest and persecuted the Jewish people to conform to Greek culture, forsaking the faith and traditions of their fathers.

While returning to his land with great riches:
Failing in his invasion of Egypt, Antiochus Epiphanes returned home with only great plunder to soothe his wounded pride.

Ships from Cyprus shall come against him:
This was naval assistance from the Romans, who helped the Egyptians turn back Antiochus Epiphanes about 7 miles from Alexanderia.

They shall take away the daily sacrifices, and place there the abomination of desolation:
Antiochus Epiphanes set up an image of Zeus at the temple altar. He demanded sacrifice to this image, and later desecrated the temple by sacrificing a pig on it.

"Wood Commentaries:
“It was in truth an abomination, which brought a desolate condition to the Temple, for now no one would come to worship at all.”

Those who do wickedly against the covenant he shall corrupt with flattery; but the people who know their God shall be strong:
When Antiochus Epiphanes turned on Jerusalem, the Jewish people were divided. Some forsook their covenant with God and embraced Greek culture. Those who knew their God made a stand for righteousness in the face of incredible persecution.

For many days they shall fall by sword and flame, by captivity and plundering:
In his attack on Jerusalem Antiochus IV is said to have killed 80,000 Jews, taken 40,000 more as prisoners, and sold another 40,000 as slaves. He also plundered the temple, robbing it of approximately $1 billion by modern calculations.

Until the time of the end; because it is still for the appointed time:
This terror could only last for as long as God had appointed it, and God had a purpose even for such persecution and blasphemy.

*******************NOTICE****************

Daniel 11:35 is the end of the prediction concerning Antiochus Epiphanes. Verse #36 then begins the End Time events that was promised by the angel in 10:14..........
"Now I am come to make thee understand what shall befall thy people in the latter days: for yet the vision is for many days."

The main object of this encounter was to show Daniel the outcome of events at the End of time of Israel's oppression by the Gentiles.
I can say that with ALL confidence that time has now come due to the statement by Gaberial in verse #35.

Daniel 11:36...........
"Then the king shall do according to his own will: he shall exalt and magnify himself above every god, shall speak blasphemies against the God of gods, and shall prosper till the wrath has been accomplished; for what has been determined shall be done."

He shall exalt and magnify himself above every god
:
The angel explained to Daniel that this king would blaspheme God and exalt himself until the wrath has been accomplished and what has been determined shall be done.

Above every god:
Here we shift from what was fulfilled in the Ptolemies and the Selucids to what will be fulfilled in the Antichrist, the final world dictator. Daniel was told that this revelation pertained to the latter days (Daniel 10:14), and Daniel 11:36 begins to look more towards this final world dictator, who is sort of a “last days Antiochus Epiphanes.”

We know that everything about this prophecy was not fulfilled during the career of Antiochus Epiphanes.

Jesus specifically said the real abomination of desolation was still in the future in Matthew 24:14.

The Apostle Paul paraphrased Daniel 11:36 in reference to the coming Antichrist in 2 Thess. 2:3-4........
"Let no one deceive you by any means; for that Day will not come unless the falling away comes first, and the man of sin is revealed, the son of perdition, who opposes and exalts himself above all that is called God or that is worshiped, so that he sits as God in the temple of God, showing himself that he is God.

Antiochus Epiphanes is important, but mostly as a historical preview of the Antichrist. This is why so much space is given to describing the career of one evil man – because he prefigures the ultimate evil man. Antiochus Epiphanes is the “trailer” released well before the Antichrist, who is like the “feature.”

He shall exalt and magnify himself above every god:
Antiochus Epiphanes certainly did this in the general sense that all sinners oppose God. Yet he remained loyal to the Greek religious tradition, which revered the entire Olympian pantheon. Antiochus Epiphanes put a statue of Zeus in the temple, not of himself. This statement will be far more precisely fulfilled in the Antichrist, who sits as God in the temple of God, showing himself that he is God (2 Thess. 2:4)

Shall prosper till the wrath has been accomplished:
Antichrist will do much damage, but he is on a short chain and will only work into God’s plan. God’s purpose will be accomplished.

Daniel 11:37-39..............
"He shall regard neither the God of his fathers nor the desire of women, nor regard any god; for he shall exalt himself above them all. But in their place he shall honor a god of fortresses; and a god which his fathers did not know he shall honor with gold and silver, with precious stones and pleasant things. Thus he shall act against the strongest fortresses with a foreign god, which he shall acknowledge, and advance its glory; and he shall cause them to rule over many, and divide the land for gain."

He shall regard neither the God of his fathers nor the desire of women
:
Based on this, some Bible scholars believe that the Antichrist will be of Jewish descent, and perhaps will also be a homosexual.

These things may not be popularly known about the man, but they may be true nonetheless.

But many liberal commentators believe that the desire of women refers to Jesus, in that all women desired the honor of bearing the Messiah and understanding “desire” as it is used in Haggai 2:7.

He shall honor a god of fortresses:
The Antichrist will take and hold power with military might and the shrewd use of great riches.

The purpose of chapters 10-12 are.................
1. Give more insight as to what will happen to Israel in the Last Days.
2. Complete the revelation as to where the A/C will come from.
3. Complete the revelation concerning Gentile powers that will oppress Israel before the 2nd Coming of Christ.
4. Give further information about the little horn, A/C.

Several names are given for this man:
1. Man of Sin
2. Son of Perdition
3. Little Horn
4. Beast
5. King of the North.

This coming Anti-Christ will be a MAN, a human being. He will be consumed and controlled by Satan so much so that there will be no difference.

Daniel 11:40-45 = The final conflict.

"At the time of the end the king of the South shall attack him; and the king of the North shall come against him like a whirlwind, with chariots, horsemen, and with many ships; and he shall enter the countries, overwhelm them, and pass through. He shall also enter the Glorious Land, and many countries shall be overthrown; but these shall escape from his hand: Edom, Moab, and the prominent people of Ammon. He shall stretch out his hand against the countries, and the land of Egypt shall not escape. He shall have power over the treasures of gold and silver, and over all the precious things of Egypt; also the Libyans and Ethiopians shall follow at his heels. But news from the east and the north shall trouble him; therefore he shall go out with great fury to destroy and annihilate many. And he shall plant the tents of his palace between the seas and the glorious holy mountain; yet he shall come to his end, and no one will help him."

Over the years, many men have be named as the Antichrist:
1. Hitler
2. Ronald Reagan
3. Stalin
4. The Pope of Rome
5. Mussolini
6. Juan Carlos I of Spain
7. Javier Solana
8. Bill Gates
9. Prince William
10. The BEAST Computer.
11. Sunday Worship.

At the time of the end:
The angel described to Daniel a confederation of kings coming against this great leader, with a battle in and near the Holy Land.

King of the South shall attack him; and the king of the North shall come against him like a whirlwind:
Prophetically speaking, a precise identification of peoples mentioned is difficult. The king of the South may be Egypt or represent the Arab community. The king of the North may be the Antichrist’s domain (as the “new Antiochus Epiphanes”) or it may be Russia.

The precise points may be cloudy, but the general idea is clear. The end will be marked by great conflict, culminating in the world’s armies gathering in the Promised Land to do final battle.

Yet he shall come to his end, and no one will help him:
In the end there is no hope for the Antichrist or for any of his followers.

Daniel Chapter 12

What do we know so far????????

1. A peace treaty with be signed with Israel and the A/C.
2. The Rapture of all born again believers will take place.
3. For 3 & 1/2 years there will be world wide peace.
4. At the end of the 1st 3 & 1/2 year mark, the A/C will tell the world that he is god.
5. War will then rage for the next 3 & 1/2 years.
6. Jesus Christ comes for 2nd time at Armageddon.
7. There will then be a 1000 year rule of Christ.

Daniel 12:1...............
"And at that time shall Michael stand up, the great prince which standeth for the children of thy people: and there shall be a time of trouble, such as never was since there was a nation even to that same time: and at that time thy people shall be delivered, every one that shall be found written in the book."

Daniel 12 starts with a statement that is pretty full on. Daniel is told that the coming tribulation and rise of the Antichrist will lead to time of unequalled distress not seen since the foundation of the world. Now there have been some pretty horrific times in human history so we shouldn't just read over this statement too quickly.

There shall be a time of trouble:
This refers to the time of persecution for Israel and world calamity known as the Great Tribulation. This period is also called the time of Jacob’s trouble in Jeremiah 30:7.

It will be an unprecedented time. Jesus of course spoke about this same period saying:

Matt. 24:21-22 .......
"For then there will be a great tribulation, such as has not occurred since the beginning of the world until now, nor ever will. (22) "Unless those days had been cut short, no life would have been saved; but for the sake of the elect those days will be cut short.

The prophet Jeremiah also spoke of this time saying:

Jeremiah 30:6-7 ..........
"
Ask now, and see, Whether a man is ever in labor with child? So why do I see every man with his hands on his loins Like a woman in labor, And all faces turned pale? (7) Alas! For that day is great, So that none is like it; And it is the time of Jacob's trouble, But he shall be saved out of it."

While the whole world will be in upheaval during this time, this time of distress will be even more intensified for the nation of Israel. As Jeremiah says - it is the time of Jacob's trouble. And yet we find something else rather remarkable from Daniel's prophecy...Israel has a protector of the highest order! Michael, the only archangel specified in scripture, is assigned to protect the nation of Israel! And though the time of distress and tribulation will be unequalled, yet all of Daniel's people, the Jews, whose name are written in the book will be delivered.

Daniel is then instructed to seal the words of the scroll. I believe this means that the words of this prophecy were to be protected until the time of the end when their words will become invaluable to those who are seeing the fulfilment of its words.

Two key prophecies in Daniel 12
Two other interesting prophecies are given in this passage:
  1. Many will go here and there (or to and fro) - verse #4.
  2. Knowledge will increase. ---------------------verse #4.
In its context the fulfillment of these words are likely to be related to the study of prophecy and the words of Daniel. A vast increase in knowledge of Bible prophecy has, and is, occurring. Many others take these as general prophecies of the travel and knowledge explosion that is occurring at an ever increasing rate.

May I say that this "Tribulation Period" is much like a "purging. There will be a purifying of Israel that will bring her to a place where God can fulfill His everlasting promises made to her fathers. The effects will be.............

1. God will purge Israel of all rebellion.
2. God will judge Isreal for rejecting her Messiah.
3. God will make Israel will to accept the Messiah when He comes.

Daniel 12:2............
"And many of them that sleep in the dust of the earth shall awake, some to everlasting life, and some to shame and everlasting contempt."

IS THIS A DESCRIPTION OF THE RAPTURE OF THE CHURCH OF BELIEVERS??????------NO IT IS NOT!!!!

Daniel never speaks of the Church or Christians or born again believers. HIS people are the Jews. That is who is in view here.

AFTER the Great Tribulation there will be TWO RESURRECTIONS.
#1. For the Righteous to everlasting life.
#2. The Un-Righteous to everlasting death.

John teaches us in the Revelation that these TWO are separated by the 1000 years rule of Christ. ALL the redeemed from ADAM until the Rapture will be raised.

The Un-righteous/lost are raised at the end of the 1000 years rule of Christ and they will be cast into the Lake Of Fire.

Remember...........The church or Christians have been resurrected before the 7 year Tribulation started. The church had to be Raptured at that time so that the A/C would be released.

Many of those who sleep in the dust of the earth shall awake:
Some think this refers to the resurrection of Israel as a nation. But the plainest meaning is that it refers to the resurrection of the body in general.

Some to everlasting life, some to shame and everlasting contempt:
The Bible clearly teaches two resurrections, one for the saved and one for the damned (John 5:29, Revelation 20:4-6, and Revelation 11-15). If we really believed every one of us would live forever, it would profoundly change our life.

Everlasting contempt:
The terror of hell never ends. There is not blissful annihilation after some period of punishment. This passage denies a rising doctrine within the church: a modified annihilationism that teaches that unjustified sinners are sent to Hell and they suffer torment for a while, but then their beings perish for eternity. "EVERLASTING = FOREVER"!

Revelation 20:10 also certainly describes eternal punishment for the Devil and the Antichrist.

Dr. John Walvoord states..........
“There would be no way possible in the Greek language to state more emphatically the everlasting punishment of the lost than here in mentioning both day and night and the expression ‘forever and ever,’ literally ‘to the ages of ages.’”

Logically, Hell must be eternal, because it is where imperfect beings must pay a continual penalty for their sins because they cannot ever make a perfect payment. Principles behind Old Testament sacrifice remind us that an imperfect payment for sins must be a continual payment for sins.

Many of those who sleep in the dust of the earth shall awake:
The Scriptures as a whole teach us that there are not only many resurrected. There is evidence that the Hebrew word for many in Daniel 12:2 can also be used for all.

Baldwinn Comm,.......
“The emphasis is not upon many as opposed to all, but rather on the numbers involved.”

As well, the Bible states that all are raised but not all at the same time or in the same manner (Revelation 20:5-6).

Daniel 12:3...............
"And they that be wise shall shine as the brightness of the firmament; and they that turn many to righteousness as the stars for ever and ever."
Those who are wise shall shine like the brightness of the firmament: Those who live in God’s wisdom will shine. Despite the entire calamity, all the difficulty coming upon Israel, God has those who are wise, and they shall shine.

Here, we see that the wise among God’s people are those who turn many to righteousness.
A wise man is one that follow God. There are marvelous rewards for the righteous.

One of those REWARDS that we can receive is for soul winning. Not everyone is called to preach. Not everyone is called to teach, however ALL Christians can lead the lost to Christ! As a born again believer, it is YOUR mission and goal in life to share the saving grace of God in Jesus Christ.

All God’s people are like stars in the sense that they radiate light and help others to see and find their way. But certainly, those who turn many to righteousness shine even more brightly, helping even more people to see the light and find their way.

This promise applies to all the wise, and all of those who turn many to righteousness through all ages.
However, here in this Scripture the context has its most specific application to the 144,000 evangelists from Israel’s tribes during the Tribulation as seen in Rev. 7.

ALL, EVERYONE of the 144,000 are Jewish, virgin men. They are not the Jehovah Witnesses or Mormons or 7th Dat Advantists or anyone else.

Forever and ever:
The brightness of God’s wise ones, and those who turn many to righteousness, will last forever. It isn’t fading. It endures, when so many other things that we put our effort into, even if they succeed, give only a temporary “shine.” It is worth it to invest our lives into the things that last forever and ever.

Daniel 12:4...........

Conclusion of the book. Instructions to seal the book.

“But you, Daniel, shut up the words, and seal the book until the time of the end; many shall run to and fro, and knowledge shall increase.”

Shut up the words, and seal the book
:
To shut up the words implied that the words should be kept safely until the time when they were needed.
The book of Daniel is written by a JEW, to JEWS, about JEWS and ironically is vastly unknown to the great majority of Jews.
May I say to you all that a lot of people are WILLINGLY IGNORANT!

The Jews had book after book of the Old Testament that clearly outlined the coming of their Messiah. They had ears to hear what was going on in Jerusalem by Jesus and His disciples. They had eyes to see what was going on all around them yet they CHOOSE to not understand. May I say to you alll that I am afraid that is still the case today.

Seal the book:
This has the double sense of authenticating the message and preserving it.

Until the time of the end:
Daniel’s prophecy certainly was of some value in his own day. But there would come a day, the time of the end, when his prophecy would be of even more importance. Therefore, it was important to shut up the words, and seal the book until the time of the end.

Adam Clarke, 1825----
“We must wait ‘till the time of the end;’ and this, it appears from the following calculations, will not arrive before the TWENTIETH CENTURY. We here see the reason why these prophecies are at present so imperfectly understood. God has sealed them.”

Many shall run to and fro, and knowledge shall increase:
Here, Daniel describes a characteristic of the time of the end. Many take this prediction as being fulfilled in the travel (run to and fro) and information explosions (knowledge shall increase) of our modern age.

Many shall run to and fro, and knowledge shall increase:
This has more the idea of searching after knowledge rather than rapid forms of transportation.

Wood Commentary---
“The idea is that people would run about trying to find answers to important questions, especially in reference to future events.”.

Personally, I think that this prophecy is all about the people left behind after the RAPTURE!
People then will want answers as to where there loved went and what happened and what is going on. Since everyone then, except the witnesses and the 144,000 will be lost there will be a dedicated exploration of the Scriptures to find answers. But unless they come into contact with one of the 144,000 to hear the gospel THEY CAN NOT BE SAVED.

Newell Commentary---
“The correct sense is that ‘many shall search it through and through,’ and that as a consequence ‘knowledge of the book itself shall be increased.’

Shut up the words, and seal the book:
Daniel has revealed enough to us so that the book really can be sealed. From Daniel 11:36 to Daniel 12:3, we have seen:

1. A world ruler, utterly opposed to God.

2. A world religion, based on the abomination of desolation.

3. A world war, which defeats the ruler.

Daniel 12:5-7...........
"Then I, Daniel, looked; and there stood two others, one on this riverbank and the other on that riverbank. And one said to the man clothed in linen, who was above the waters of the river, “How long shall the fulfillment of these wonders be?” Then I heard the man clothed in linen, who was above the waters of the river, when he held up his right hand and his left hand to heaven, and swore by Him who lives forever, that it shall be for a time, times, and half a time; and when the power of the holy people has been completely shattered, all these things shall be finished."

From chapter 10 through 12, Daniel was beside the River Hiddekel or as most call it...The Tigris River. The record we have been reading has all been from that one encounter. The man in linen here is the same as the one in chapter 10:5-6.
Then Daniel told us that he see TWO other creatures appear. IMPO, the one in linen, standing on the waters is in fact the Pre-Incarnate Christ. Now in case you do not agree, who else do YOU think could declare the time of the end?

One said to the man clothed in linen… “How long shall the fulfillment of these wonders be?”
Seemingly, these other men on the riverbank were angels. One angel asked the other, not for the benefit of the angel, but for Daniel’s benefit and our benefit. That says to me that these angels have been following along the whole time with the narrative.

Held up his right hand and his left hand to heaven, and swore by Him who lives forever:
In a solemn oath, one angel announced that the time of trouble would last three and one-half years = (a time, times, and half a time) or 42 months.

The prediction was emphasized by the solemn oath, and by the miracle that accompanied the words: who was above the waters in the river. The angel “walked on water” when he told the other angel and Daniel that these things would happen within a three and one half year period.

A time, times, and half a time:
This three and one-half year period is well known in other passages of Biblical prophecy. It is the "GREAT Tribulation" or the last half of the SEVEN 9&0 Year Tribulation or JACPBS TROUBLE!

Daniel 7:25 described it as the period that saints are given into Antichrist’s hands.

Daniel 9:27 described it as the period between the breaking of Antichrist’s covenant with Israel, the erection of the abomination of desolation, and the establishment of Jesus’ kingdom.

Daniel 12:7 described it as the duration of “the time of trouble” for Israel.

Revelation 11:2 described it as the period that the holy city will be tread underfoot by Gentiles.

Revelation 11:3 described it as the period of ministry for the two witnesses.

Revelation 12:6 and 12:14 described it as the period that Israel (perhaps only its remnant) is preserved by God in the wilderness.

Revelation 13:5 describe it as the duration of Antichrist’s authority to rule, persecute and blaspheme.

Taking all these together, we are obviously dealing with the last half of Daniel’s seventieth week (the Great Tribulation); and we know very little about the first half.

When the power of the holy people has been completely shattered, all these things shall be finished:
The people of Israel will seem completely crushed as these things end, but at that time, the Messiah – upon whom they will trust before He returns – will return to rescue them.

As Israel comes to learn the knowledge that the man whom they have made peace with is in fact evil. war will break out as he (A/C) will try and kill all who refuse him. It will be a World Wide conflict but it will be centered and focused around Israel.

The Jews will flee to Moab and Petra's wilderness and God will protect His people there by stirring up the countries to the NORT and EAST.

Now.....Russia is due NORTH and CHINA is due EAST. Do YOU think that the current strife and confrontation with them are by accident?????? Do YOU think that Russia invading Georgia was a coincidence? Do you think Russia invading Ukraine is a coincidence?

Or Do YOU think that God is in the process of "Stirring them up"?????

Daniel 12:8.............
"Although I heard, I did not understand. Then I said, “My lord, what shall be the end of these things?”

Although I heard, I did not understand
:
This comforts us. Daniel didn’t understand it all either, even though he heard it first hand.
I have read Daniel about 100 times. I have produced one Bible study after another. I have taught it and preached and I still have problems with it.

What shall be the end of these things?
Perhaps Daniel asked this question because he was anxious, and just maybe, as he understood just how terrible the time of trouble would be, he found it hard to accept.
