DEA Seizes Largest Amount Of Fentanyl In Its History: 386M Lethal Doses, Enough 'To Kill Every America'

"Today, fentanyl is the leading cause of death for Americans between the ages of 18 and 45. In calendar year 2023, DEA seized more than 77 million fentanyl pills and nearly 12,000 pounds of fentanyl powder. This is the most fentanyl seized by DEA in a single year. It amounts to more than 386 million deadly doses of fentanyl—enough to kill every American."

Is this insane, or what? It is hard to see our world getting any better any time soon.

Illegal fentanyl is mixed with all illegal drugs, whether it be cocaine, meth or even marijuana. There is literally no "safe" street drug. Making matters worse, many fentanyl pills are made to look like childrens' candy. Lastly, lethal doses of fentanyl can be transmitted by touch. First responders have died while helping overdose victims by simply touching the victim.

Be very careful. Illegal drugs are no joke.

Here is a funny story. When you say that lethal doses of fentanyl can be transported by tough, what you are saying is that the active ingredient is water soluble. This is the same with other drugs, like LSD. Many years ago, I was doing an undercover drug deal for 200 units of LSD. As luck would have it, I was doing the deal in the "bad guy's" van than was parked in the parking lot of a local steak house. Unknown to me, he had the 200 units with him and handed them right to me with no container. So, I had them in my hand. Once I left the van, I made a very quick path to my car, placed them in a container, and washed by hands. We did not have disposable hand-sanitizers back then, so I used the Dr. Peper I had in a can. By then, it was a bit too late and some of the chemicals were observed through the sweat of my palm. That night, I actually had several hallucinogenic visions that were really disturbing. At one point, I actually thought I was being chased by a herd of rabbits. It did not last long, but it was really odd.

Now.......what is the correlation between all of this and the huge amount of illegal aliens coming across the Mexican border?????

Wow I didn't know the problem was that bad and you can just die by touching it.
We have meth problem in nz now, not sure how it got in, and vapes are everywhere. Synthetic cannabis too.
We had problems with codeine in cough mixtures, people were using it to brew other drugs to get high.

I'm not really sold on drugs, though everyone uses them at some point.

The bible says to believers if you drink any deadly thing, it won't kill you. But I wouldn't go round deliberately doing that... it does amaze me that people drink alcohol and claim it doesn't affect them. I feel violently sick even after a sip.

What?

Well, the current claim is that the majority of precursor chemicals for illicitly manufactured fentanyl come from China and are synthesized into fentanyl in Mexico. Not sure this has much to with the majority of people crossing the border.

"Currently, China remains the primary source of fentanyl and fentanyl-related substances trafficked through international mail and express consignment operations environment, as well as the main source for all fentanyl-related substances trafficked into the United States."

Wow, the DEA agents must really have had to 'wrap up'.

Well, I am unsure if you can actually die from the "contact high." It will get in your system, but not in enough levels to kill you.

However, "Fentanyl and other synthetic opioids are the most common drugs involved in overdose deaths.1 Even in small doses, it can be deadly. Over 150 people die every day from overdoses related to synthetic opioids like fentanyl."

While not obviously possible when you are working in an under-cover capacity, when you raid a location that manufactures any type of illicit drug, you have to wear protective gear.

Once again, many many years ago, I was an evidence custodian. Now, the government makes drugs like cocaine and heroin for legal uses. We used to get a small supply from them, which would then be placed inside various training aides that are used to train narcotic detection dogs. Being young and fairly stupid, I did not wear a mask and dust particles made it into my nose. I did not get "hi," but had the mother of all headaches.

We also use to keep a small amount of marijuana to certify people on the smell of it. This is how a police officer can claim that they smelled what they believed to be marijuana on someone or something. The rest was destroyed in a controlled burn once a year.

Is that worldwide or the US?
When I went to the DEA supervisor's course, they explained this as the synergistic effect. "Two or more drugs that individually produce overtly similar effects will sometimes display greatly enhanced effects when given in combination. When the combined effect is greater than that predicted by their individual potencies, the combination is said to be synergistic." In other words, when you take something that includes multiple substances (which is often how street drugs are manufactured), you just never know what you are going to get. Fentanyl is often used to "kick up" low quality substances like cocaine and heroin.

So, what are people actually doing about it. Aside from the drug busts.

I thought opoids were made from opium poppies which are mostly grown in Afghanistan. I don't know about the synthetics.
I don't think I really want to know.

Govts can't really do anything about it when its already circulating or being smuggled through.
China wanted to ban opium but the Brits insisted on trading it and they had a whole war about it, back in the day.

Opium won and they had to have a few concessions - like Hong Kong.
I guess its kind of like how in the US they have some gambling cities like Las Vegas where you have freedom to sin all you like as the rules there are different. Or San Francisco during the 60s where everyone there somehow got LSD and young people were flocking there like droves.

I wonder if there's a Fentanyl centre in the US. I've heard it badly affects those living in the Appachalians but not sure where the centre of the trade is happening.

The CDC explains the addiction as part of the “three waves of the opium overdose epidemic.” The first abuse was for Oxycontin in the late 1990s. The second wave involved heroin, when prescription opioids became more expensive. The third wave was replacing heroin for fentanyl, as a cheaper substitute.

Chinese laborers who came to work on U.S. railroads in the 1850s and 1860s brought with them the practice of opium smoking. I know that the invention of the syringe created the addiction to morphine during the civil war. In an effort to fix that, heroin was used and then that became an issue.

Fentanyl deaths are greatest in California, Florida, and New York (due to population). When adjusted for population, looks like West Virgina wins. South Dakota has the lowest.

The history or drugs is interesting. Did you know that Coca Cola got its name because, when it first came out, it actually had Cocaine? The ingredients included cocaine (Coca) and caffeine extract from the kola nut (Cola).

Makes one wonder, ‘who stays ahead of who’, the abusers or the authorities?
Man, I wish I knew what this means :)

As a species, we do appear to become addicted to one thing or the other rather easily.

Drugs, porn, alcohol, food,

I've actually never done drugs, aside from simulation training. I have done a good bit of drinking (in the past), but I never really liked the taste of alcohol. Good is another story and i really don't understand how someone gets addicted to porn. I can understand watching it, especially as a young man, but not to the point where it is an addition.

Don't understand it, but I get it. I had a friend who had an addictive personality and was addicted to pretty much everything. It ended up killing him way too early in life. He retired in shame, lost his family, and lived under conditions I would not want by dog living in. His last years on earth were horrible and no one had the power to change that. Very sad.

you can arrest hundreds of suppliers every day. it slows it down for a moment . for every dealer supplier took down. that many more will pick it up and continue. i also know the law does what they can and it helps. but the drug war will never be won until the drug addiction is stopped . i been around the block a few times ive seen the results of the syntactic drugs. i am 62 and know people my age or older still does meth the buzz seems cool we like the feeling. but end results we burn brain cells up and ruin our bodies, i quit just as meth was being made popular . actually i had a brief encounter in fed court . you would be surprised who helps bring the drugs in
