An Indepth Bible Study In The Book Of Genesis.

I would like to present a weekly Bible Study in the very important foundational book of Genesis. I will present the study by chapters. Since I will post by chapters, the study can be "in depth" rather than just a survey or skimming. I will post a new chapter on each Monday, giving the whole week for study and replies.

There are certain subjects that degenerate into strong debate and thus Moderator or my action to cease that debate will be expected and we'll move on to the next chapter. This will be a study on "what saith the Lord" not what saith our opinions.

I'm no stranger to Forum Bible Studies, as my friends from other Forums will testify....My question is: Do you folks want this Bible Study? If so, I will post "the first day of creation" then each day. After we look at each day, we will move to each chapter.

If any of you have a different method of study that you'd like to see, let me know and we'll discuss it. I have found that this study can be fun as well as informative.

As long as you stick to exegesis and flee eisegesis there should be no conflict. There are many here on this forum who have studied God's word at tertiary level and are no strangers to disciplined indepth study.

It would be my honor to study with such an elite group of Theologians....Who knows, I might learn something new.(y)

That sounds a good idea to me @Chopper.
Please proceed. (y)

I thank you sir, and thanks to the others who have responded. I will proceed with the study. I am open to any suggestions as to how the study is presented. In the past, I have posted it several ways. Because I'm involved in two other Forums, my posting right now will be once per week. If what I'm expecting, an "in depth" study will encompass many aspects of each presentation.

My thanks and honor to present Genesis.

Every Monday sounds great.
Only one suggestion, please don't make it exceedingly long as members may scan and not read all properly. If there is a lot you would like to write may I suggest that you divide half on Monday and the remaining on Tuesday?
I look forward to it. :)

Hello Chopper,
This sounds very good, if a few certain individuals will keep their useless comments to them selves and not insist on posting them. It tends to ruin things for every one.
Blessings my Friend
Jim

April 15, 2015 Genesis Chapter one Verse one.

Gen 1:1 In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth.(KJV)

God — the name of the Supreme Being, signifying in Hebrew, “Strong,” “Mighty.” It is expressive of omnipotent power; and by its use here in the plural form, is obscurely taught at the opening of the Bible, a doctrine clearly revealed in other parts of it, namely, that though God is one, there is a plurality of persons in the Godhead - Father, Son, and Spirit, who were engaged in the creative work (Pro_8:27; Joh_1:3, Joh_1:10; Eph_3:9; Heb_1:2; Job_26:13)....Jamieson, Fausset, and Brown.

Note: I like to present some of my favorite theologians and their quotes before I present my views.
John MacArthur. "God creating heaven and earth is understood to be recent, not millions of years ago. ex nihilo (Latin) out of nothing. Scripture does not support a creation date earlier than about 10,000 years ago."

God, Elohim is a general term for deity and a name for the True God, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.

T. Desmond Alexander, Union Theological College (Belfast) Ph.d. The Queens University of Belfast. "Heavens and the earth here means everything. This means, then, that "in the beginning" refers to the beginning of everything. The effect of the opening words of the Bible is to establish that God, in His inscrutable wisdom, sovereign power, and Majesty, is the Creator of all things that exist."

John 1:1 "In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. (1:2) The same was in the beginning with God. (1:3) All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made."....When ever I think of the creation of the Heavens and Earth, I think of the Logos (Christ Jesus) Who was the One Scripture says did the work of creation. When I think about this I see the Name for God as plural Elohim which causes me to believe that the entire Godhead was involved.

I ran into an interesting website that claims the earth is older than the sun and agrees with science on this point: http://redmoonrapture.com/earth-is-older-than-the-sun.html

"
The science community has admitted to the main stream media that water on planet earth is much older than the sun. New work from a team including Carnegie’s Conel Alexander found that much of our solar system’s water likely originated as ices that formed in interstellar space. Their work is published in Science [http://www.sciencemag.org].

The research strongly supports the Biblical creation theory described in the book of Genesis. Just amazing.

Why is this amazing? The Genesis’ account of “creation” is that the sun was created AFTER God touched the water-covered earth. Prevailing common sense would tell you the sun came first and then the earth – that is how solar systems are formed … but science is discovering otherwise.

Even more amazing is NASA researchers named the article title posted on the Science magazine website ” Half of Earth’s water formed before the sun was born”.

The Bible clearly states in the Book of Genesis that God first created waters on the Earth, and then divided the waters in HALF !

Genesis Day 1 of Creation.

Genesis 1:1

1 In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. 2 The earth was without form, and void; and darkness was on the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters.

Genesis Day 2 of Creation. God created Water.

Genesis 1:6-8

6 Then God said, “Let there be a firmament in the midst of the waters, and let it divide the waters from the waters.” 7 Thus God made the firmament, and divided the waters which were under the firmament from the waters which were above the firmament; and it was so. 8 And God called the firmament Heaven. So the evening and the morning were the second day.

Genesis Day 3 – God created the Oceans

Genesis 1: 9-10

9 Then God said, “Let the waters under the heavens be gathered together into one place, and let the dry land appear”; and it was so. 10 And God called the dry land Earth, and the gathering together of the waters He called Seas. And God saw that it was good.

Genesis Day 4 – God created the Sun, Moon and the Stars to be SIGNS !

Genesis 1:14-19

14 Then God said, “Let there be lights in the firmament of the heavens to divide the day from the night; and let them be for signs and seasons, and for days and years; 15 and let them be for lights in the firmament of the heavens to give light on the earth”; and it was so. 16 Then God made two great lights: the greater light to rule the day, and the lesser light to rule the night. He made the stars also.17 God set them in the firmament of the heavens to give light on the earth, 18 and to rule over the day and over the night, and to divide the light from the darkness. And God saw that it was good. 19 So the evening and the morning were the fourth day.

“This is a very interesting result. We’ve been debating this for years, whether or not the ices have an interstellar heritage,” says astrophysicist Karen Willacy of NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California. She says that other groups have tried to model the collapse of clouds in the ISM into planetary systems to see if ice would survive, but “with various results, that don’t always agree,” Willacy says. “This is much more simple approach, just using the chemistry which is well understood.”

My other perennial favorite in comparing how science can sometimes agree with the bible is:

When I think about this I see the Name for God as plural Elohim which causes me to believe that the entire Godhead was involved.

I don't think the fact that Elohim is plural necessarily proves the doctrine of the Trinity. I certainly think the doctrine of the Trinity is true.

I agree that the entire Godhead was involved in creation.

To just see creation as a simple 6 day event where things just kind of magically happened seems to gloss over a lot of important details, I think. I don't know exactly how long creation took in terms of how we see time now, but I know there was a lot to it. Astronomy and many things that science has observed about stars and space are quite amazing and I don't think any of these things that are standard observations take away from the word of God one bit. We definitely don't need to reconcile everything perfectly ourselves, the word of God stands true despite what evil men try to do.

Genesis is awesome. The first chapter of Genesis is awesome. There is the foundation for so much else in the scriptures laid right here in the first chapter. New believers are often told to start in one of the synoptic gospels. That's not bad, but I would say, hey, start right here, genesis chapter 1. And don't stop reading.

Thanks for bringing this topic up.

Thank you Silk for your post. You have presented some valuable information that answers a question that I've had for years. Scientists have examined the earth's crust as well as layers of the earth to deep depths and formulated an age of the earth by their calculations. In my mind, I was never satisfied with their findings as compared to Dr. MacArthur's reasoning.

Your presentation about the water on earth's surface causes me to ponder the fact that the deeper the water, the more weight and pressure is exerted on the waters floor. My question to you is; could that pressure account for all the dating calculations that scientists have come up with thus giving much older dates of the earth than in reality?

Your reply was just what I was hoping would happen in this study. All I want to do is provide a "springboard" of information to you and others so that you all will give forth your own findings to stimulate our curiosity on certain subjects, and to present your own valuable quotes with the idea that we all can form or own theology in this fantastic Book of beginnings.

Thank you John Rogers for your post. I really like your statement, "We definitely don't need to reconcile everything perfectly ourselves, the word of God stands true despite what evil men try to do." That my friend is a Home Run." When I meditate on Verse one of Genesis, I see so very much of what the whole of Scripture presents. Genesis One is called the Verse of beginnings. In it I see the beginning of Israel thru Abraham. I see the beginning of the Promised Land thru Moses and Joshua. Actually, I see many beginnings right up to the beginning of the Church of Jesus Christ at Pentecost.

The book of Genesis enthralls me. As a child, when it was read to me seemed rather straight forward and simple. The more I read it, the more I am flabberghasted by the intricacy and compression of so much. If you watch Dr. Schroeder's (he's a nuclear physicist) thru the 8 parts (80 mins) - you get to see how time could work. The idea that a Creator, out of the time/space continuum, would apply how the physical world works. I encourage anyone with questions about time see what he says. Little pieces, such as the 1st 10 Patriarch's names tell the story (http://www.exploringcreation.info/messiah/patriarchs.htm , or http://www.rtgmin.org/2012/06/08/names-special-meaning/) of God's plan. It astonishes me because there is always more to learn about this scripture. It is tightly woven and amazingly compressed. And all truth.

I'm in awe of the very accurate words that you use that, at my age, have escaped my memory. You say "amazingly compressed". Wow, that says volumes about this marvelous Book Genesis. That's why I said an "in depth" study. So far, I'm impressed and pleased with the responses and fires me up to continue with joy....Thank you Silk!

By the way, I am fascinated with Dr. Schroeder's findings. I don't have a lot of time to view video's but I have viewed Part 1,2,3,4. Dr. Schroeder is brilliant and his presentation is well worth the time to view. If others have not viewed his series, I, along with Silk would recommend the view.

For convenience, I found the 8 parts together, for those who wanna watch. It seemed a bit different from my other posts tho. He takes the time to explain hebrew words and meanings which I delight in.
The speech was given in 1998, at least he mentions the date in one of the clips.

Oops - I guess you have to go to youtube to watch them in order: it's 14 (?) down. https://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=+gerald+schroeder+8+videos

Genesis 1:1 is the signature of God mathematically (http://www.whatabeginning.com) I hope you take some time to read it. John 1:1 has similar capabilities. In Genesis 1:1, if you take the number of letters multiplied by the product of the letters, divide them by the number of words times the product of the words, you get Pi π - to an accuracy of 99.999%. If you do the same thing to John 1:1 by multiplying the number of letters times product of the letters, divide them by the number of words times the product of the words, you get mathematical constant e which is used in compound interest, Euler's identity, Euler's formula half-lives (exponential growth and decay), and natural logarithm.

Here are some other comments I've made on this subject:

I must say, I'm in awe of your research and findings. I have read all that you presented and quite frankly, have never focused on such truthful and accurate Signature of God. Thank you so very much for your intellect in math. You are right, most of us are totally ignorant of math.

I would like your permission to copy your graphs and symbols. I would like to present them to my unbelieving Brother who excels in math. Your presentation just might be what brings him to our Lord for Salvation.
