Question About Homosexuality When Applying For Job

  1. I am applying for a job at a Christian high school as a coach. One of the questions on the application asks about whether I condone homosexuality or not. It's a yes or no answer. I think this is a loaded question. I know the Bible says that homosexuality is a sin and God is against it. However, I also believe that as Christians, we are to love everyone and are called by Christ to reach out to sinners. I have several gay friends and they know I'm a Christian. I don't want to work for a school that is in any way discriminatory toward any group, gays included. Jesus was not discriminatory…he formed relationships with all kinds of people and taught them about God and morality. Also, what would happen if a student confided in me that they had homosexual thoughts? I would want to be show care and love not condemnation.

    In a nutshell, what would Jesus do in this situation? I'm very confused. Thank you.
     
  2. I guess I don't see a problem with the question coming from a Christian organization. Now if it said "do you condemn people that are homosexual?"; that would be a bit off putting. But as a Christian; you shouldn't condone (approve of; be in support of) homosexual behavior. As a 'Christian organization' trying uphold their integrity under Christian tenants; they need to know who they are hiring.

    If there is a section in the application for your thoughts; make a statement about how you are not willing to condemn people who practice homosexual behavior. God will be the judge.
     
  3. There's no way you can really know the context for why that specific question is being asked. The school may have had some sort of specific incident it wants to prevent from reoccurring.

    Strictly speaking, not condoning something doesn't mean you're not compassionate toward people who do that thing. Like, if the question said, do you condone staring directly into the sun for a prolonged period of time, the answer would be no, but it wouldn't be expected that you condemn any person who does that, or mistreat them in any way.

    I solve these sorts of dilemmas (where you're not sure about the context of an ethical question) on job applications by using the term "unconditional positive regard" in my practice framework. I say I have unconditional positive regard toward all people under my care, and I explain that a person's value to me is not dependent on anything they do, even as we work together to address the things that they do that negatively impact their life.

    Like you say, though, that might get you the job, but the worry is how a particular policy plays out in a practical way in the school. I guess you'll either have to dig for stories, or just jump in and see what happens. I'm not really sure there's any other way you can know for sure. In a job interview, they'll probably ask you what you would do in various scenarios. If you want to be totally upfront and see how they react, you could try to work in a story, or a hypothetical scenario, of a student you knew who was a homosexual, and how you dealt with that situation in a compassionate way, then it's their call about whether or not that's what they're looking for.
     
  4. I also find that to be a loaded question. Something I might do is simply not answer it, then wait for it to come out in the interview so you can completely explain your position.

    Also, just because it's a Y/N answer, doesn't mean you can't write notes in the margin.
     
  5. such a question is unconstitutional, and I would contact the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission.

    There can be no sexual harassment and no question that would put down one groups of sex orientation.

    Ignoring the question may cost you the job and best to get an outside agency involved.

    In some cases such a question may be valid such as apply for a position at a gay bar. The owner would have a right to screen anyone that may cause their patrons troubles.

    I would get professional advice as it is a loaded question and it's hard to tell what answer they expect.

    Whether a person is against or for homosexuality, I'm guessing the correct answer would have to be no, right? Since it is a high school, I would assume they would not want to condone any sexuality.

  8. What would your answer be if the question were: "Do you condone theft?" or, "Do you condone adultery?"

    Why would your answer regarding homosexuality be any different?

    I'd use the link in his post to confirm this and ask about options.
     
  10. Its a "Christian" High School? Im assuming its supported by a Church in some way? The law could be very different under these circumstances? I would not want a homosexual in the gym and or locker room with young people, and this question seems a legitimate question to me.
