Holy Week ... How Is Your Church, Or You, Commemorating Our Lord's Passion...

  1. Just would like to share all of us how the different denominations are commemorating this most holy week which leads up to Resurrection Sunday... in my Catholic faith we have finished the 40 days of Lent and this week every day we have church service that commemorates the different days of our Lord prior to His crucifixion and then Resurrection Sunday.

Wednesday at night we had the ''tenebrae' mass which was one of hymns, prayers and it ended with the sound of the rock closing on the tomb...

Yesterday during mass at night the priest enacted the Lord's washing of the feet on the altar. The pastor's sermon was also based on that ... afterward lots of us got into a bus and went visiting 3 churches in our area, and prayed in all of them... the week for us started with Palm Sunday where we give each other the palm signifying peace and forgiveness...

Today, Good Friday, we have mass, prayer session in the morning and then at 3pm, and then there is a procession that we take in the streets passing by several churches and then finishing at one of the three whereby we have prayer sessions and speak of our Lord's passion. There is not meat all week, no music at all today, there is a traditional pasta dish, for Italians i guess mostly, which is made ahead of time with just eggs and cheese which is baked and is ready to be eaten since we will not be cooking today.

Tomorrow, Saturday, there is a morning prayer and then an evening Easter vigil mass which is rather long, i am one of the lectors and it is my first time to read at a vigil mass ...

Sunday, Resurrection Day is a day of big celebrations and we all share in the festivity of our Lord's victory over death and redemption for us all...the bells on the church will be ringing in joy for this day, and there are 4 masses of which one in English and Italian and one in Spanish, and then the wonderful meal which some have been preparing for days...

Happy and Blessed Resurrection Day to all... may our Lord bless you and your family every day... <><

  2. Palm Sunday, took a palm leaf to church to be anointed and to bring the blessing back to our homes. Had a main service today for Good Friday at 3pm. Very good services. That our Lord Jesus didn't die in vain, brought our requests to the cross of our problems that they are symbolically nailed to the cross. And on Sunday, shall bring request of what we would like to see resurrected in our lives. We believe that Jesus can set us free and that God can change things for us in an instant but usually we are required to do something. We have to do our part whether learning to use our faith because it may be weak and needs to be strengthened. Jesus could have healed the blind man instantly but he put mud on his eyes and told him to go to the river. The man had to make his way blind to the water however far it was to be healed. And knowing that even more than blessings our salvation is the most important thing. That Jesus is alive, the cross at our church is empty symbolising that He has risen and is no longer hung on the cross.

  3. Sal... the same is done in church at 3pm today ... last week at Palm Sunday it was beautiful to walk out of church with the blessed palms and the bells ringing while all of us parishioners were giving each other greetings and being happy to be together celebrating this wonderful day... Jesus has set us free from the bondage of sin as He set free the Hebrews from Egypt, and we commemorate His week so it is passed on to the next generation and is all done in the community of all of us, we are all a part of His plan and we all have our ways of remembering and glorifying our Lord whether in prayer or in our symbols in church. Followers of our Lord in other countries are all so wonderful in the way they pray and glorify God our Lord Jesus... my church knows that our Lord has risen as all Christian churches profess...
