When Someone Does You Wrong

Behold, I give unto you power to tread on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy: and nothing shall by any means hurt you.

– Luke 10:19

Someone’s done you wrong! Sooner or later it happens to all of us. Somewhere along the way, we all get hurt or cheated or lied to or abused.

It’s as predictable as it is painful. Yet when it happens most of us find ourselves strangely unprepared. In our outrage, we often cry out to God against the one who wronged us. We ask for justice, or even vengeance, and end up making things tougher on everyone involved—including ourselves.

If that’s been true of you, it’s time you found out how you can put the power of God to work for you the next time someone does you wrong.

Step one: Identify the enemy! Right here’s where the majority of us make our biggest blunder. We mistakenly identify our enemy as the person who hurts us. Don’t waste your energy ranting and raving or plotting and scheming against people who cause you pain. They’re simply under the devil’s influence. Aim your spiritual ammunition at the right target. It’s the devil who’s behind it all. Go after him!

Step two: Fire! Once you’ve pointed your spiritual guns in the right direction, fire! Hit the devil fast and furiously with the Word of God. Use the Name of Jesus and the power that’s been given you as a believer and bind the devil from doing you any further harm in that area. Then move on to the next and most important part of this spiritual battle.

Step three: Pray the prayer of intercession. In Matthew 5:44-45, Jesus gives us these instructions: “Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them which despitefully use you, and persecute you; that ye may be the children of your Father which is in heaven.”

Crying out for the vengeance of God to strike like a lightning bolt when someone does us wrong isn’t acting like our Father. Remember, God has great, great mercy. Not just for me and you, but for everyone!

The devil will probably think twice before he bothers you again. Next time someone causes you pain, put the power of God to work for you. Identify the real enemy. Hit him hard with the authority you’ve been given as a believer. Then pray the prayer of intercession.

Hello Cturtle.
I can see the relationship with the scripture reading to the verse from the Book of Luke. However, I personally see it very differently. Hope you do not mind my input here.

...Step one: Identify the enemy! Right here’s where the majority of us make our biggest blunder. We mistakenly identify our enemy as the person who hurts us. Don’t waste your energy ranting and raving or plotting and scheming against people who cause you pain...
People, places, things, and situations do not cause us pain, we do it to ourselves. The pain we feel is the loss of self-esteem derived from lost investment in our expectation of how we think people, places, things and situations ought to be. This loss is the ego's fear and grief.

...They’re simply under the devil’s influence...
The serpent in the Garden of Eden, in this case, is the our ego in the our Ideal World of our mind. Evil thrives on fear, and both the devil and ego are fear-based. The devil tries to influence us to fear, and the ego uses fear to avoid the truth. Both are counter-productive to seeing the truth of our pain (being let down).

...Aim your spiritual ammunition at the right target. It’s the devil who’s behind it all. Go after him!
The right target is what is evil (devil and ego-fears). Go after them both!

Step two: Fire! Once you’ve pointed your spiritual guns in the right direction, fire! Hit the devil fast and furiously with the Word of God. Use the Name of Jesus and the power that’s been given you as a believer and bind the devil from doing you any further harm in that area. Then move on to the next and most important part of this spiritual battle...your ego-self, the old nature which feels the pain due to a slip in faith that regardless of what happens, we in Christ (new nature) are okay.

Love your enemies for they make us aware of our ego-fears. Our enemies have no investment in making us feel okay, so whenever we don't feel okay, we realize that our faith in Christ is now somewhat lacking. In this viewpoint we can love our enemies for revealing our defects of character resurfacing again (old nature), and our shortcomings (lack of putting our faith to the test). So our enemies are the ones who actually point of some truth about us. If we really were in Christ (our new nature) we would not see the enemy as such, but as a source of fear to not participate in. and to see the truth behind that fear.

Crying out for the vengeance of God to strike like a lightning bolt when someone does us wrong isn’t acting like our Father. Remember, God has great, great mercy. Not just for me and you, but for everyone!
True, because God can see the fear which enslaves them to be what we call the enemy.

The devil will probably think twice before he bothers you again. Next time someone causes you pain, put the power of God to work for you. Identify the real enemy. Hit him hard with the authority you’ve been given as a believer. Then pray the prayer of intercession.
Personally, I pray and meditate on God's will for me, and it has always been to see the Truth. The Truth will set us free from the fears which cause all our suffering.

A huge problem with Christians today is being Easily Offended.
This is another area that our enemy the devil tries to get people.

Once they are Offended they take hold of the offense then they are all about self. Poor me!!

This then stops their love walk and without love their faith is hindered and they begin to get more frustrated because their life is not all peaches and cream.

If people got in the practice of walking in Love and Forgiveness then they themselves would not be deceived into taking hold of a offense in the first place.

Another easy sign you have aught against some one is that one twist what they say into an offense against them no matter what is said.

Don't fool your self, this hurts one more then the offense one thought was there.

Don't ever allow an offense to take root because it brings forth Bitterness and frustration and anger and sin and will hinder Every Area of one's life.

Hello CTurtle,

Thank you for sharing this topic and many, many good points here! From my own experience of being offended, it took me years to understand. Please stay in the Word, read our Bible, chew in the Word, study our Bible , meditate and pray what the Lord is saying, and the Holy Spirit will manifest in us a spirit of peace during an offense.

Jesus was a huge target of offensive darts and arrows and we will see in the scripture He always responded with a peace within. We can too.

Sure, offensive darts and arrows may sting at first, unexpectantly, but we will be filled with a God's peace. God's Peace helps us to think better and remember the scripture. Then we are equipped and prepared how to respond.

When an offense triggers us in the flesh, we cannot respond to the spirit because we react with an emotional breakdown.

God bless you all, and may the peace of God be with you.

Good reminders and encouragement for sure! Thank you so much Bob. I also find that if i am quick to repent for being offended... it helps me to keep my focus on God and His ways or love and peace.

I have also found that if i don't repent, i have trouble being in the Word, or having a desire to want anything to do with God.

Maybe others are different, but for me I know that it's because until I break the demonic connection that I have joined myself to (1Peter 1:14)... and reconnect with God's love, mercy, grace and receive my cleansing of all my unrighteousness (1 John 1:9)... i will keep desiring the evil fleshly ways which are contrary to God's (Galatians 5:17)

Reminds me of James 1:19....
Young's Literal Translation
So then, my brethren beloved, let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak, slow to anger,

Amen, CTurtle.

Jim also shares a serious point of Christians getting easily offended. This is sad and we need to ask the Lord to intersede on speculations and assumptions when Christians are "offended" by what other Christians say and do in the church.

Many times we bring these offenses (imaginations) upon ourselves.

I was prompted by the Spirit to join in this topic because this is an area of ministry that many suffer in the community. Praise God that nothing, nothing can get in the way of God's protection, when we diligently seek Him.

God bless you all and thank you.

Hello Peter Luke;

I read carefully your post and applications, thank you. May I ask what your experience has been with people who cross your path or speak to you, daily, and may actually say or do something that is an attack on you?

God bless you, brother.

...what your experience has been with people who cross your path or speak to you, daily, and may actually say or do something that is an attack on you?
Long time ago, when unknowingly enslaved to my ego-self, my thoughts and reactions were exactly how my ego reacted. That is, to feel threatened about my self-esteem, then feeling the loss of self-esteem, and then desperately feeling the need for re-validation to regain what I lost (plus more). All the following emotions were experienced in seeking compensation - revenge, anger, rage, blaming, gloating, resentment, hate, loathing, mistrust, criticism, gossiping, and I am sure there are others.

During my recovery from alcoholism and drug addition I went through the 12-Step program. Steps 4,5,9 and 10 are exercises to truly know yourself from birth to the present day, on a daily basis. In other words, I am aware what is true about me. So when somebody says something about me it is either true or it is not true.
  1. If it is true and I already knew about it then I say, "Yes, that is true, and thank you for reminding me".
  2. If it is true and I was not aware of it before (because being true helps you to be open to truth), then I say "Thank you for revealing that to me, I have not recognized that part of me before".
  3. If it is not true, and after truly assessing it as not true, then I know it is more likely a reflection of the accuser. Then I say nothing, but listen to the accusation and ask them to explain how they came to their conclusion. This usually gets side-tracked by denial. But on occasion it opens up their own issues and if they let me, I help them out in a loving caring way. Made some friends that way.
In all scenarios I am not threatened and do not see it as an attack. It is the fear of being exposed and vulnerable which causes the ego to feel threatened / attacked.

Jesus Christ willfully demonstrated that the body (flesh) and our old nature (without the Holy Spirit) is not affected by either physical or mental attacks. He showed us this on the cross. It was His final demonstration that we, with the faith in Christ (to believe), will also overcome our ego (earthly) fears. That is the salvation we can experience while we are alive on earth. It is about Truthful Living in Christ via the Spirit of Truth (Holy Spirit).

Hello Peter Luke;

Thank you for replying with a wonderful post especially numbers one, two and three. It helps to think of letting go our defenses and instead be more receiving. The other part you mentioned is ego.

I shared with someone yesterday that I was made aware of some things about me and I thanked them for revealing but still walked away with a "bruised ego." I'm going through the process right now of the Lord working through me, humbling me to be accountable of my offenses to others. I'm also going to have to seek forgiveness.

God bless you, brother.

Yes, we have that authority and praying for those who have hurt us is so important. Had that happen when insulted last week while a workman swore at me when I was picking up my mail. He had piled tools in the way and I asked him to please remove. He didn't like that. As I left I asked God to bless him. And my day was fine afterwards. I believe his may have improved as well since I prayed for him rather than swearing back at him. Not only is it the right thing to do but it does work. God has mercy and we need to have mercy as well.

Hi Peter Luke,

Thank you so much for sharing how you assess and process things. Can I ask how you were able to get to this place. Because for me.. i think this might be an answer to some of my own issues.

God bless you abundantly my friend

...I'm also going to have to seek forgiveness...
God bless you brother Bob.

Only seek forgiveness from God, which you may already be aware of. If not...

Make amends to others, but don't expect forgiveness from them, or you may restart another ego-fear called resentment. Besides, some people take time to deal with their own resentments about us before they can forgive us. So sometimes we offer to make amends but they reject it. But later (as we drive home in resentment) they have forgiven us but we don't know it. So seeking forgiveness is about forgiving ourselves through our willingness to make amends, and not about relying on others to forgive us. God knows what is in our heart, not so much by other people.

Keep up your faith in Christ, and the Truth will set you free.

The Twelve Step Program:
  1. We admitted we were powerless over alcohol—that our lives had become unmanageable.
  2. Came to believe that a Power greater than ourselves could restore us to sanity.
  3. Made a decision to turn our will and our lives over to the care of God as we understood Him.
  4. Made a searching and fearless moral inventory of ourselves.
  5. Admitted to God, to ourselves, and to another human being the exact nature of our wrongs.
  6. Were entirely ready to have God remove all these defects of character.
  7. Humbly asked Him to remove our shortcomings.
  8. Made a list of all persons we had harmed, and became willing to make amends to them all.
  9. Made direct amends to such people wherever possible, except when to do so would injure them or others.
  10. Continued to take personal inventory, and when we were wrong, promptly admitted it.
  11. Sought through prayer and meditation to improve our conscious contact with God as we understood Him, praying only for knowledge of His will for us and the power to carry that out.
  12. Having had a spiritual awakening as the result of these steps, we tried to carry this message to alcoholics, and to practice these principles in all our affairs.
Originally I refused to do this program out of fear, arrogance and ignorance. As a consequence I suffered another seven years in addiction. It was not until I was facing death from internal hemorrhaging (sclerosis of the liver) before I was prepared to do the twelve step program from Alcoholics Anonymous. For me it was AA or amen. I believe it is a God given program. It has helped me to trust a God of my understanding, and as a result I was able to see my truth. My life in Christ has changed my old nature of deception to a new nature of honesty, truth and love.

Steps 1 to 12 has been my daily life program for the last 29 years. I no longer have to think about the program, it is who I am.
Some say that AA is brainwashing. To those, all I can say is that my brain needed washing.
Every year, life in Christ, gets better.

Thank you so much for your heartfelt response and for taking the time to reply. I have been praying about it all and I can see that it's a one step and moment at a time lifestyle that I am needing to adopt.

Taking Thee Word of God and allowing it to continue to renew my mind to His ways and allowing Him to guide me in every way. The 12 steps can help me also. Just letting God help me put all the pieces together

God bless you and your family

Hello all!

The hardest to forgive I think, is while they are still enjoying what they did to you. The easiest those that were unaware they were hurting you. I was once cursed out royally by a complete stranger at a job site. He didn't realize what he was doing because I knew instantly that it was Satan in him coming against Christ in me.

Corrie ten Boom, one of my faith heroes, had ample opportunity to hold onto unforgiveness. Those responsibile for the deaths of her family. Thank God most of us never have to deal with things on that level.

It frighteningly sometimes takes awhile for us to even realize that we are living in unforgiveness in some cases. Even when God is trying to tell us. I went through this and it was literally years before I realized how much evil it was doing. Mainly to me. Even if people never repent of what they did to you, that does not relieve you of responsibility to forgive.

Their sin does not justify ours.

When I decided to overcome myself it was a liberating experience. Even though my family denied knowledge of what they'd done I was free. We can read the word, pray and so forth but it still comes down to a decision. We have no choice but to forgive. It's amazing what can hide in plain sight. Thanks be to God for His unspeakable gift!

It was He who did it through one of us.
How far does that go towards thoughts of predestination ?

We are all blessed. Praise Him.
