Southern Baptist Convention Removes Saddleback Church

The Southern Baptist Convention – the largest Protestant denomination in the United States – in its annual meeting today voted overwhelmingly to remove Rick Warren's Saddleback Church from its membership.

The Baptist Press, which describes itself as the SBC’s official news service, reported Saddleback was found “not to be in friendly cooperation” with the SBC’s “statement of faith,” which says in part that “the office of pastor is limited to men.”

Pastor Warren appointed a husband and wife to succeed him after his retirement in 2021. Three more women were ordained as pastors at Saddleback that year, according to Baptist Press.

Per the Baptist Press, 9,437 votes were cast in favor of upholding the decision, compared to 1,212 against.

1 Timothy 3:2........
"A bishop then must be blameless, the husband of one wife, temperate, sober-minded, of good behavior, hospitable, able to teach".

Hello Major;

The SBC made the right decision to discontinue the membership of this Church and for other reasons. In the last 10 years this man's leading of it's church declined in the integrity and upholding of it's Pastoral leaders and doctrine. The congregation has been sorely blinded by this and it hurt the Christian community up and down California. He has had several setbacks in his ministry. It is was it is.

We are members of the California Southern Baptist Convention and have served with the Great Commission Association of Southern Baptist Churches. (both are under the umbrella of the SBC).

God bless you, Major.

If a church is a member of a fellowship body, that church should agree with all critical, scriptural points in the body's statement of faith. Saddleback Church, to maintain its integrity, should have removed itself long ago from the SBC.

Hello BibleLover;

We attend a Southern Baptist Church in Los Altos, CA, and are active members of the California Southern Baptist Convention and the Great Commission Association of Southern Baptist Churches the latter located in the South Bay of the SF Bay Area.

We just learned yesterday that after the SBC removed Saddleback, the California Southern Baptist Convention and Orange County Baptist Association overlooked what they will decide with Saddleback since they are members of both.

My gut feeling is this may be political since Saddleback has deep pockets and are big contributors to the convention and association.

I'm sure this will be a concern between the accord of doctrine between SBC, CSBC and OCBA.
