Named Storm: 'Humberto'

Advisory - Tropical Storm Humberto 13:30 Hrs USA-CDT, 12 September 2007

Tropical Storm Humberto formed within the past 12 hours from a tropical low pressure area in the northwestern Gulf of Mexico. The storm is a minimal Tropical Storm and it's center is located approximately 65 miles south - southwest of Galveston, Texas, and is moving north at 6 MPH with maximum winds at 47 MPH. Persons along the Gulf Coast of Texas as well as southwestern Louisiana are under Tropical Storm warnings and watches. A small amount of strengthening may take place and because this storm is a slow mover, rainfall totals in excess of 12 inches is possible in the Texas/Louisiana border area. The storm will move inland tomorrow and will then move northeast into central Louisiana, Mississippi and northern Alabama by the weekend.

We will only post additional information about this storm if it strengthens above what the computer models are predicting.

We are also watching Tropical Depression # 8 which is in the central Atlantic approximately 1100 miles east of the Lesser Antillies. Tropical Depression # 8 will make Tropical Storm strength within 16 hours or less. We will post data as necessary once Tropical Depression # 8 becomes a named storm.

HURRICANE Humberto Update - 04:30 Hrs CDT-USA, 13 September 2007

Approximately 2 hours before making landfall 60 miles northeast of Galveston, Texas, the storm intensified over the warm Gulf waters to minimal Category 1 hurricane strength. Hurricane force winds at approximately 83 MPH were present for a short time near Port Arthur, Texas, but only in a 15 mile wide area. The intensity of the storm will decrease quickly now that it is over land, but strong wind gusts, lowlands flooding and heavy rains can be expected from Galveston to coastal areas near New Orleans today. Persons in southern and central Louisiana, Mississippi and central Alabama and Georgia can expect rainfall from this system at about 7 to 10 inches in some locations over the next 2 to 4 days. This will be beneficial to the drought areas of the south and southeastern US.
