Yummmmm Being that my Mama was cajun, "lost bread" or "french toast" was a very common breakfast in our household and it's something I will always love to make and eat. Just typing it, I feel like I can smell Mama cooking it right now. Oh I wish. I might have to make a trip to New Orleans tomorrow. The reason that it was called "lost bread" is because it was usually made with bread that was a day or two old and would be thrown out, or "lost". Money was tight so people didn't waste anything. So nothing was lost, not even bread. Here is a recipe for it, it's delish: 6 eggs 2 tablespoons of vanilla 1 1/2 cups of sugar 1/2 cup whole milk 1/2 cup butter/margarine 1 loaf of bread (square pan is good to use) Mix all ingredients well. Warm a tablespoon of margarine in pan. Dip bread into mixture and put in pan. Fry 4 pieces of bread at a time adding more margarine as needed. Fry only until bread is light brown. No more sugar or sypur is needed. Enjoy!
