  1. Why Do We Speak In Tongues

Jude 20Building up your most holy faith praying in the Holy Ghost.
When we pray in the spirit it builds our faith and strengthens us.

1 Corinthians 13:1Though I speak with the tongues of men and of angels...
We could be praying in a language only heaven knows, sometimes in earthly languages.

1 Corinthians 14:2For he that speaketh in an unknown tongue speaketh not unto men, but unto God: for no man understandeth him; howbeit in the spirit he speaketh mysteries.
When we pray in the Spirit, we are speaking mysteries, things we do not know about, but the Lord hears and answers them.

1 Corinthians 14:14For if I pray in a tongue, my spirit prays, but my understanding is unfruitful.
When we pray in the spirit it comes from our spirit not our mind, we don't understand it with our natural mind, but don’t need to because we are talking to God.

Romans 8:26Likewise the Spirit also helps in our weaknesses. For we do not know what we should pray for as we ought, but the Spirit Himself makes intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered
When you don't know how to pray about a situation, you can pray in an unknown tongue, as the Spirit gives you the utterance and the Holy Spirit prays through us.

Romans 8:27Now He who searches the hearts knows what the mind of the Spirit is, because He makes intercession for the saints according to the will of God.
We are praying out the Father's perfect will in your life or someone elses, praying out the details. We should pray in tongues everyday.

Ephesians 6:11Put on the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil

Ephesians 6:18 praying always with all prayer and supplication in the spiritbeing watchful to this end with all perseverance and supplication for all the saints.
This is only only part of the armour and if we don’t use the whole armour we aren’t fully protected.

1 Corinthians 14:18I thank my God, I speak with tongues more than ye all.
If Paul prayed in tongues a lot, how much more should we do so

  2. I don't think it is so important for beginner Christians to speak in tongues, for the Lord will show us how to do it when He feels we are ready. I believe that when we become born again Christians then we receive that gift because we then have been baptized of the holy spirit (not of water). For even if we can do something, we may not know how to do it if God has not guided us yet. Every Christian will be able to do when the time is right and God shows us how to do it. We don't need to rush it. It's more important to focus on having a close relationship with God rather than just focus on receiving His gift of speaking in tongues, for then we are more concerned about a gift rather than who the gift came from. At least those are my thoughts on it. My main point is that God will show each individual Christian how to speak in tongues when He feels they are ready. I don't believe it's normal to happen instantly when you become a born again believer.
  3. When we speak in tongues ..

it edifies our spirit . so .. that's one reason
  4. Actually as soon as we get saved that is the best time to go ahead and ask Jesus to baptise us with the Holy Spirit. If we didn't need Him He wouldn't have told us receive. We want more of Him, but His gifts come with Him when we receive. You buy a car, not just to have an engine, but the engine comes with it. :)
  5. Isn't it that when you are saved that the Lord baptizes you with the holy spirit? Isn't that how you become born again? He puts the holy spirit in you... That's what I had thought. I don't know... As you can see, I'm still pretty new at this.
  6. This is two different things:

When we repent of our sins and receive Jesus into our life, the Holy Spirit regenerates our dead spirit and makes it alive, we are born again, a new creature. The Holy Spirit baptizes us into the Body of Christ .

    1 Corinthians 12:13
For by one Spirit are we all baptized into one body, whether we be Jews or Gentiles, whether we be bond or free; and have been all made to drink into one Spirit.

This is for the purpose of becoming a child of God

Then after we are saved we ask Jesus to baptize us with the Holy Spirit. Baptize means emersed. The Holy Spirit comes upon us and we are completely emmersed in His Spirit and filled to overflowing.

Mark 1:7 And preached, saying, There cometh one mightier than I after me, the latchet of whose shoes I am not worthy to stoop down and unloose. I indeed have baptized you with water: but he shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost.

This is for the purpose of giving us power to become a witness for Him

Acts 1:8 But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth.
  7. Ah okay. Ever since I became born again, I've felt a peace in my spirit. A renewal. Something different than I have ever felt before. Maybe I asked to be baptized in the spirit but just can't remember. Not sure but just in case, I prayed and asked for it after I typed out that message you responded to.

  8. You will be different when you get saved even if you don't receive the baptism of the Holy Spirit, because now you are at peace and right with God and alive in your spirit. :) The Spirit did a work in you.
But the Baptism of the Spirit is a separate experience
  9. In order to receive it, all I would need to do is ask God in prayer for it?
  10. Yes, if you are born again, and made sure in prayer that you are walking in fellowship with God and there's nothing between you :)
  11. Awesome! Check, check and check.

... What about being baptized in water? Does that have no gain? Just a symbol similar to if you become circumcised?
  12. Phil , I like to think of our Christian journey like this .

!..... Baptism into the Body of Christ..... And that is Salvation .......1 Cor 12 : 13. We are all baptised into one body and filled with the Holy Spirit when we are saved.Every believer receives the same amount of the SpiritJews or Greeks, slave or free.... every believer receives as much Holy Spirit as there is to receive.... Col 2: 9-10...The presence of the Holy Spirit is what identifies us as believers "into one body"

    2..... Water Baptism .....
Romans 6 3-4....Baptism ( Name Tag)... Spiritual Truth... Identifies us with the community as a Christian representing spiritual truth. All of us who were baptised in water have been a representative of Death to self and sin and now alive in Christ.

3......Baptism in the Holy Spirit...... we recieve power for service....
Acts 1:8.... we receive power in word and deed. we receive effectiveness in our Christian witness

" You will be my witness "
Acts 2:4 All of them received Acts10:45-46 Acts 19:6
  13. (I sent you a PM :) )

The Bible says to be water baptized so we should. But some were filled with the Spirit first, so it doesn't matter which order.
  14. Oh so It's a symbol. Not a must have to get to heaven... We should do it but it's not a must have? I'm just wondering because I don't step into church much and go with the ceremonies and such. I do know I am saved and getting closer with God though. I will get a water baptism as soon as I get into the habit of going to church every Sunday. As od now, I mostly learn from recorded Sunday teachings and podcast and video teachings on itunes and the internet and this this website and I read my Bible.
  15. Water baptism does not save a person. But it is an outward sign to the world that there has already been a change inside and that we belong to Jesus now. This is important and we do this in obedience to His Word. :)
  16. PM'ed you. :)
  17. Please document with scripture . I've heard the opposite view articulated from scripture also . so it would be edifying not only for me but for those lurking also .
  18. I've posted several through out threads in this forum.

Here one that comes to mind immediately. They were already believers

    Acts 19:2
He said unto them, Have ye received the Holy Ghost since ye believed? And they said unto him, We have not so much as heard whether there be any Holy Ghost.
  19. I know this can all be confusing to a new Christian but we need to remember that we all have the Holy Spirit when we received Christ as our personal Saviour .

First we accepted Christ ... then we can be water baptised as a proclamation of our faith to give our testimony that we are going to follow Jesus and then there is the baptism of the Holy Spirit as I said with the evidence of speaking in tongues which empowers us and enables us , just as it did the disciples in the book of Acts to be better witnesses for Christ.

I would suggest to you to study some of the other threads as well in this section to give you better information about the Holy Spirit. I don't mean to confuse you at this time so take it one step at a time .

The Baptism in the Hloy Spirit is an experience in which the believer yields control of himself to the Holy Spirit ( Matt 3:11 ; Acts 1:5 ; Eph 5:18 ) Through this he comes to know Christ in a more intimate way .

Baptism in the Holy Spirit is distinct from and subsequent to conversion , and is accompanied by the initial evidence of speaking in tongues just as they did on the day of Pentecost.

I also believe that while the H. S. comes to transform and indell us when we become a believer there is also a need of an experience that Jesus referred to as the Baptism of the Holy Spirit. . This is an experience of power for service for those who are already believers in Christ.

To try and summarize , empowerment is given subsequent to conversion for continuing the ministry of Christ. It is a vocal gift . It is to help Christians live out the commission of Christ as a prophetic community . As one opens their life to this new dimention in the Spirit a new power for evangelism and living a Christain life should result .

Please note and this is important ..... The Baptism in the Spirit does not come through water baptism . Water baptism is not the same as Baptism In the Holy Spirit.

I hope this helps and does not confuse.

  20. hmm when Paul talks to the galatians it seems they recieved the holy spirit just by hearing the gospel and believing it like Cornelius and his company . i think there is a deeper truth at work here . care to shed some light on it?
