What Is A Generational Oppression/curse?

Discussion in 'General Discussions' started by ~forgiven_not_forsaken~, Jun 26, 2013.

  1. I have read part of the book by perry stone called purging your house and pruning your family tree and it talks about this and my mother in law has talked about it but im not sure I really understand it. does it really have anything to do with demonic attachment? how can you tell if someone has one?
  2. Remember that the church is comprised collectively of born again individuals who love the Lord Jesus, and the church is a heavenly people (Ephesians 1, etc.).

Israel is an earthly people, and the idea of people rooted in the land, and curses being upon generations is particularly and Old Testament idea.

Today, people need to reckon themselves 'vertically related' to God individually, through the Lord Jesus. Meanwhile, God will take care of other spiritual spheres which we can't see.
  3. Yes, individuals and families can be demonically oppressed. It's a lot more common than you would imagine.
Demons generally prefer just to cause enough havoc to make everyone involved miserable, and therefore much more prone to act out in sinfull and unproductive behaviors (they don't want to make their presence obvious).
There is no simple way to tell if a person is getting influenced by the demonic, but signs are a strong dislike of religious subjects and objects bordering on hate, fear of clergy, malicious behaviors, and odd moods and depression.
  4. I think we have to remember also that while we cannot see evil spirits, they are there, but, as the Lord Jesus said to His disciples, 'Greater is He that is in you, than he that is in the world' (1 John 4:4).
  5. I am thinking that there are multiple questions here: as the thread post states: "What is a generational oppression/ curse?", I wanted to address some ideas with that.

There are a couple of schools of thought on this: (probably more than I am going to mention here)

A: This only pertains to the children of Israel-not truly born again Christians
B: That 'curses' / 'demons' can attach themselves to a family or inhabit an individual of a family and continuously posses them.
C: That a 'generational curse' follows a people until redemption / salvation/ /confession /forgiveness is offered up or paid for.

In my opinion; what it means to have a 'generational curse' is more a kin to the following:

When God's people don't leave a 'Godly inheritance' to the next generation-that next generation is doomed to slide/ backslide farther away from God until God is no longer in the picture at all. (We are seeing a lot of this in the USA). Standards, morals and ethics of God's people get so diluted that they are either lost completely or the people believe they are doing the right thing until the are convicted by the Word through the Holy Spirit.

Proverbs 22 sums it up in verse 6:
6 Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it.

Therefore we are called as believers to teach our children the ways of God from birth until death-all the days of our lives.
    Deuteronomy 4:
    9 Only take heed to thyself, and keep thy soul diligently, lest thou forget the things which thine eyes have seen, and lest they depart from thy heart all the days of thy life: but teach them thy sons, and thy sons' sons;

Often times you will get Exodus 20:5 and like verses that state:
    5 Thou shalt not bow down thyself to them, nor serve them: for I the Lord thy God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children unto the third and fourth generation of them that hate me;

    But we forget verse 6:
6 And shewing mercy unto thousands of them that love me, and keep my commandments.

God's ways have not changed; the story has always been: obedience and love to God; and God will accept our imperfection if we seek Him and repent of our worldly ways.
  6. I love God and Jesus and I have no fear of clergy nor do I hate or dislike religion. I do suffer from depression and anxiety and I have since I was a child due to different kinds of abuse.
  7. Another verse of assurance to believers in troubled circumstances is John 16:33: 'In the world ye shall have tribulation; but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world'.

  8. I know of several people who suffer from depression, it can be quite the burden.
But, you have found Christ, and with Him all things can be cured, just be patient.
The fact that you are a professing Christian makes it much less likely that any of Satan's
lackeys are pestering you in any meaningful way.

  9. I was reading an article earlier that was talking of sins/iniquities of the father and how the children have to pay for them unless they repent for their sins and the sins of those before them. it also said that even if you accept Christ that if you have demons in you before that they will just lay dormant until you do something that triggers them. I come from a family of all sorts of problems, my dads side has bad tempers and alcoholism, my grandmother also enjoyed men way to much, she had several boyfriends, one night stands and failed marriages. I don't know hardly anything of my grandfathers side because I have never met him. my moms side im not to sure off. my grandmother never really opened up. she did tell me one time that her grandmother killed a witch by drawing a circle on the ground and stabbing a knife in the middle, I remember my mom saying she had a Ouija board when she was a teen and how she kept it under her bed and it being on her bed when she woke up. my parents married when my mom was 5 months pregnant with my older brother, she was 18 my dad was 16. I don't remember much about them from when I was little because they were always gone. I remember my grandma tho. my older brother had something happen to him when I was to little to understand/remember, but he still remembers and I have heard it from him and my parents and grandma. he said he was playing in a room by himself and Jesus spanked him. my family told me he came running screaming and crying that Jesus whipped him and that he had welps on his bottom, but no one else was in the house. now I know Jesus wouldn't just come and whip kids bottoms, so it had to be the devil in disguise. I have had a few strange things happen too. I have also dealt with different forms of abuse. ranging from family, friends, past boyfriends and my ex husband. I did not grow up in a chrisitan family even tho my grandma went to church and my parents are now saved and baptized but do not live a Godly life. there is a lot of drugs, alcohol and what I think are undiagnosed mental illnesses as well all the diagnosed illnesses in my family.

I also see a lot on my husbands side of the family. his paternal grandfather committed suicide so did is moms biological mother (mil was raised by her aunt but didn't find out til later) his paternal grandmothers 2nd husband died of cancer, he recently lost his uncle to cancer too. my mils parents(the ones who raised her) where involved in some sort of occult stuff and there has been some weird happenings from that. I also recently found out that mils bio mom also bounced from man to man just like she does. there is also drugs and supposedly murder (mil's brother)

could this all be from a generational curse?
  10. Again, we should remember the promises of the Lord Jesus to those who love Him and trust Him.

We all have different psychological make ups but the redeemed person has been cleansed and put on the right path, which day by day the Lord can guide and strengthen us in. See also Proverbs 3:5-6. The believer in the Lord Jesus is now the direct subject of His intercession at the right hand of the Father: Hebrews 7:25.
  11. that is what I believe as well. it hurts and I get sick of hearing my mil tell me that I have all this demonic attachment just because I have depression and I break out in hives when my anxiety gets bad. she says I have a generational curse and im the reason that things happen to my husband (these things that happen to him have been years before I ever met him). she points out my belongings and say that they have attachment and that she is blessed and anointed by God to rid evil spirits from our home and bodies and that God only tells her what we should do with our lives, yet she lies and sleeps around with men. (yes I have a problem with my mom in law, but I do love her and pray for her daily) I don't want the talk of demonic attachment even in my home. I don't want it to open up some sort of doorway for them to enter my life again. we do not even speak of satan out loud in our home. we only speak of God and his love and mercy. is it possible for someone else to bring this kind of stuff into your home, life or relationships? I read so many conflicting things. I know the Bible does talk about generational curses in the old testament but is it relevant after Jesus came and died for our sins and we accepted him as our Lord and savior?
  12. You are right to say you love and pray for your MIL, but now you need to be able to move on, love the promises of the Lord Jesus to born again believers who are now cleansed and sanctified. John's First Epistle talks about being cleansed, having fellowship and walking in the light, and these are the natural situation of people who make up the New Testament church. Blessings.
  13. I am trying to move on, I really am but it is always one thing after another. she wants us to allow her lover into our childrens lives and neither of us want that unless they get married. we allowed the one before because my husband knew him because he had been her lover before her second husband. we just want her to respect our wishes and practice what she preaches.
  14. Our method of Salvation has changed (between Old and New Testaments) but the nature of the world has not changed.
Satan is still the Jerk he always has been and still uses whatever advantage he has to corrupt people. Look at it this way, if Satan has access to dad, he will use that access to gain influence over mom, the kids, the grandkids, uncle Bob , etc.
That is how multi-generational curses work. If you break the access and come out clean, Satan has no longer any avenue of influence over your life.
  15. Like, your MIL has a partner that might come with her when she visits, you mean?
  16. well its hard to say, she told us he was only a friend, but I read the text she sent my sis in law that talked about being intimate with this guy and she is already talking about possibly moving in with him...they met on a dating site and she said he is a devout Christian but they are already sleeping together, she hasn't even been broke off with her last live in lover for a few months. not her first time doing this in my hubby's life, she has gone thru several boyfriends and has been married twice. her second divorce was final last year. she wants us to meet and be around this man and for us to allow her to take our daughter when she is with him and when she goes out of state to be with him at his home and we say no way. once this guy can't buy her what she wants, or doesn't pay as much attention to her, or does something she doesn't like she will be on to a new guy. I don't believe "devout Christians" should sleep together the first day they meet.
  17. how do I know exactly what that access is? and if my husband and I break away from this, does it clean those it comes from as well or just us? I don't want this stuff back in my home once its gone.
  18. I think maybe the key is, Who's house is it? If she stops by at your house and her 'gentleman friend' happens to be with her, then he is a brief, daytime guest and they must mind their behavior (for them both to be overnight guests in your house might be more problematic).

But you have every right not to want your children to be around them in their household, because they are the hosts (in a manner of speaking) and you guys would hypothetically be there on their terms.

    (Two cents'.)
  19. we never allow our children alone with them in either of their homes, he lives in a different state. another thing is, there is never just one. she will have one that we all meet then she will have one or two that are just "friends" who she will talk romantically to over the phone. she really can't have a male friend without trying to be in a relationship with them. it doesn't matter the age either. she got drunk and tried to kiss my hubby's friend from work who is only 19, my husband is 32. I just don't want any of my kids to see her behavior. she is a "do as I say not as I do" type of Christian. she told my sis in law that she is a horrible role model because she smokes cigarettes. I would rather my kids see and know that their aunt smokes rather than notice all their grandmothers different boyfriends. she still will not admit to us that he is her boyfriend, but she did tell her other son that he is indeed her boyfriend.
  20. I can understand your caution. Let's hope you guys successfully guide - which you indeed want to do - your kids well out of hasardous sitations relating to your MIL.
