Virtue: Self-Control

  1. Virtue: Self-Control

Peter instructs us to add the virtue of self-control to our knowledge "and to knowledge, self-control; and to self-control, perseverance; and to perseverance, godliness" 2Pe 1:6 For it is one thing to have knowledge of the right, but another thing to exercise control over one's flesh to do it.

Self-control can be a scary or unconfortable subject for some. As Paul discoursed on righteousness, self-control and the judgment to come, Felix was afraid and said, "That’s enough for now! You may leave. When I find it convenient, I will send for you." Ac 24:25For the worldly are charactaeristically "without love, unforgiving, slanderous, without self-control, brutal, not lovers of the good" 2Ti 3:3 Yet self-control is one aspect of the fruit of the Spirit. Gal 5:23

People who lack self-control lack restraint, which is to their detriment. "Like a city whose walls are broken down is a man who lacks self-control." Pr 25:28

This is particularly the case when it comes to talking."no man can tame the tongue. It is a restless evil, full of deadly poison."Jam 3:9 and sexual desire. In fact having sex in marriage is a way of escape (1Cor 10:13) for those who lack self-control. "Since there is so much immorality, each man should have his own wife, and each woman her own husband.... Do not deprive each other except by mutual consent and for a time, so that you may devote yourselves to prayer. Then come together again so that Satan will not tempt you because of your lack of self-control." 1Co 7:2,5

  3. David is another good example of self-control, in his relationship with King Saul trying to kill him, and when Shimei cursed him.

But the best example is Jesus on the cross when the crowd mocked Him.

I've heard the greatness of God's power being described as His self-control in not expressing His wrath on sinners.

  5. Titus 2:12,13 The grace of God that brings salvation has appeared to all men. It teaches us to say "No" to ungodliness and worldly passions, and to live self-controlled, upright and godly lives in this present age, while we wait for the blessed hope— the glorious appearing of our great God and Savior, Jesus Christ

Interesting that grace teaches us self-control
