Scriptures For A Funeral?

Discussion in 'General Discussions' started by Katy-follower, Apr 4, 2013.

  1. A relative died recently and I'm trying to find a scripture to include with the flowers, for the funeral.

Any ideas? Many non believers will be there so a scripture could also be comforting to them, just need the right one.

    Thoughts would be appreciated ;)
  2. Katy.........John 14:1- is always special to me.

It says 4 things that can never ever be changed and they can be used as an anchor for the soul.

    John 14:1-6
"Let not your heart be troubled: ye believe in God, believe also in me. In my Father's house are many mansions: if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you.
And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again, and receive you unto myself; that where I am, there ye may be also. And whither I go ye know, and the way ye know. Thomas saith unto him, Lord, we know not whither thou goest; and how can we know the way? Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me."

The Four Un-changing truths of Gods Word!
    1. Jesus says that He is God. That confirms Him as a PERSON.

    2. He say He is going to heaven, His Fathers house. That confirms a PLACE.

3.. HE says He will come back and take us to where He is. That confirms a PROMISE.

    4. He then tell us how to obtain the 1st 3 things which actually presents a PROBLEM.

The only way to obtain the PLACE, is to believe in the PERSON of Christ and the PROMISE He gave us. The PROBLEM then is solved because of the faith placed in the Lord Jesus as the Savior of the soul!

I hope this helps, I have used it many times and it is special to those who are born again and it also speaks to the lost that might read it.

  3. Hi!
God appointed death to man Heb. 9:27 When you die it is permitted by God.
Good thing God promised us an everlasting life. C=

A dead person is called to be asleep in the Bible. Jn. 11:11-14. When lazarus died
Death in the Bible is rest. Rev. 14:13…. Maybe by the time we’ll be all aslept.
But surely we’ll be awakened- Dan 12:2 . for the resurrection John 5:28
Rev. 20:11-12 The judgement day. Day of resurrection. Where our temporary body will be changed for permanent for eternity. Fil 3:20-21 Same body with Christ =) I Cor. 15:51
So this Eternity is what we’re preparing for.

  4. Reanne has some good ones: great suggestions!
  5. Hi Major,
Yes but these days we cannot accept His person anymore for He is not here personallyon Earth.

What we can accept now is His teaching

Colossians 2:6 As ye have therefore received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk ye in Him.
He is not a man anymore
7 Rooted and built up in Him, and established in the faith, as ye have been taught, abounding therein with thanksgiving.
We have to accept His teachings so we can walk in Him. :)))

  6. Reanne,
We are not saved by the teachings of Christ. We are saved by the "Person" of Christ who is equal to the Father and the Spirit in esseance.

    Acts 16:3--31
And he brought them out and said, sirs, what must I do to be saved?
And they said to him.....Believe upon the Lord Jesus Christ and thou shalt be saved and thy house".

    No mention there of teaching.

    Romans 10:17
"THat is thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus and ssall believe in thine heart that God raised Him from the dead, thou shalt be saved".

I hope that you see it is the Person of the Lord Jesus Christ and not His teaching which we accept to be saved.

Remeber also that it is the 3 rd Person of the Godhead which we allow to be oresent in our hearts. The Holy Spirit is the same as the Son and the Father in essence and He is a Person.

    Now then, you said.....................
"He is not a man anymore".

In as nice as a way as I can say it.......That is completly wrong.

Jesus is 100% MAN and 100% God and He sits today at the right hand of the Father as our advocate. He can do that because He is both man and God. He is a man through a glorified body.

You listed Col. 2:6-7 but you ommitted verse #9...............

"For in Him dwelleth all the fullness of the Godhead bodily".

That confirms the fact that Jesus is God and man in one body!!!!

There is no dispute that Jesus died on the cross --except for some non-Christian religions and various atheistic groups who deny the biblical record. Nevertheless, the scriptures teach us that Jesus died.

    1 Thess. 4:14
"For if we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so God will bring with Him those who have fallen asleep in Jesus," .

    1 Tim. 2:5
"For there is one God, and one mediator also between God and men, the man Christ Jesus,".

  7. Thanks all for the suggestions. So many to look through :)

I bought this book for my mother, aunt and uncle. I usually read an entire book before giving it out to anyone, but read a preview online and my mother said she will read and approve it before giving it to family. I read a section where it speaks to the lost, who are grieving.

    Link -->

Another good one, if anyone is interested, is 'Reasons we believe' - a good one to give to atheists, any non believers or even new believers, as it will strengthen them. I read it because I wanted a book to give to a friend, and it's full of scriptures, facts and even archaeological evidence. I recommend this book. It will also give you examples of scriptures to use with atheists....
  8. Reanne, I clicked like on your post because of the scriptures, although when you mentioned sleep, I look to the scripture that speaks of once being absent from the body is being present with the Lord. So once a person dies they are in Heaven awaiting the resurrection with a glorified body. I don't see this as the same as sleeping in the grave. Will look more into this, with scriptures :)

  9. Can you prove this.
We are not saved by the teaching of Christ.?
Christ is equal to the Father?

I say amen to Acts 16:3-31. But it doesn’t end there. For others are just believing. Others believe that by just believing in Him we are saved. When you believe in Christ you will come to the knowledge of salvation. That is the first part. It doesn’t end there

Believing is obeying. And what are we going to obey is the scriptures, the teachings of our Lord Jesus Christ.

Because if you reject His teaching you are rejecting Him also. What do you believe then?
    John 12:48
He that rejecteth me, and recieveth not my words, hath one that judgeth him: the word that I have spoken, the same shall judge him in the last day.

And this is what God wants us to obey. His commandment Romans 7:12

    So we can be saved.
    I Corinthians 15:1Moreover, brethren, I declare unto you the gospel which I preached unto you, which also ye have received, and wherein ye stand;
2 By which also ye are saved, if ye keep in memory what I preached unto you, unless ye have believed in vain.

  10. Yeah, It is mentioned by Christ not me. :)
And yes when you die in Christ you are in Revelation. 6:9
But if you’re not you’re there in I Peter 3:18.
  11. I'm not following you Reanne...are you really meaning this?
I think you made a typo, but not sure.

  14. 1.
This sounds like a question fron a Jehovah Witness Reanne.

Can I prove that we are saved by the work of Christ and not His teaching?

By that question it is clear that you have already rejected the Scriptures that I posted for you to read.

The gospel is the death, burial and resurrection of the Lord Jesus Christ and Romans 10:9 says that is what we believe unto salvation.

To say that we are saved by the teaching of Jesus is to reject Him as the Savior of all men by the gospel of Christ.

In fact, just a little thought on this and you can see that if we believe we are saved by the teaching of Christ that is then WORKS for salvation. We must do something to get something. We must obey, or learn or do but the Scriptures say that we are saved by GRACE through faith AND NOT OF OURSELVES LEST WE SHOULD BOAST!

Salvation is wholely by God and nothing that we can do.

Is Christ equal to the Father?

    Col. 2:9
"For in Him dwells all the fullness of the Godhead bodily;"

    1 John 1:1-4
"That which was from the beginning, which we have heard, which we have seen with our eyes, which we have looked upon, and our hands have handled, concerning the Word of life— 2 the life was manifested, and we have seen, and bear witness, and declare to you that eternal life which was with the Father and was manifested to us— 3 that which we have seen and heard we declare to you, that you also may have fellowship with us; and truly our fellowship is with the Father and with His Son Jesus Christ. 4 And these things we write to you that yourjoy may be full."

    John 1:1-3
"In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2 He was with God in the beginning. 3 Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made."

    Philippians 2:5-6
"5 Let this mind be in you which was also in Christ Jesus, 6 who, being in the form of God, did not consider it robbery to be equal with God, ".

    John 10:37-39
37 If I do not do the works of My Father, do not believe Me; 38 but if I do, though you do not believe Me, believe the works, that you may know and believe that the Father is in Me, and I in Him.”

My dear, we are in fact saved by JUST believing upon Him. Nothing else is required to be saved!!!

  15. Reanne,
I fear that you have been taught some very false teachngs which is exactly why we are not saved by the teachings of Christ but by the PERSON of Christ.

You post romans 7:12 as a basis of your teaching.

    Romans 7:12
"Therefore the law is holy, and the commandment holy and just and good."

The holiness and goodness of the Law is proved by the fact that the Law slays every sinner with whom it comes into contact with. The Law must slay else the Law would be neither holy nor just nor good.

    Ezek. 18:20
"The soul that sinneth, it shall surely die".

So then, if a soul under the law sins and dies not....that is indisputable proof that the law is eveil unholy and unjust. A holy law must of necessity impose and enforce its penality. THAT FACT explains the connection between verse 11 and 12 of Romans 7.

    Romans 8:3 says..........
"What the Law could not do, in that it was weak through the flesh."

God sent Jesus in the flesh to do what the Law could never do, therefore, God can be holy and just and yet justify the ungodly! That is exactly what God does when we put our faith in the finished work of the Lord Jesus who is co-equal and co-eternal to God the Father in every way.

When we accept and Christ, THE Person of Jesus, He is our salvation, He is our redemption, He is our atonement and God has accepted us as His Sons becaue of who Jesus is and what He has done...............NOT HIS TEACHINGS.

  16. Yes. Reanne: I must agree with your pointing out Christ's own words about His words: For me, it means more than just saying the special words of the Sinner's Prayer...It means action, not mere "belief".

  17. I didn’t know. I just know that Jehovas witness is not the real church . Nice to talk about this but I’m just asking.

I do not reject the person of Christ. But I understand person has a body. If it is a real person. You re gonna mangled the body of that person. If we’ll gonna walk with him. Literally .Just imagine.

Colo. 2:6 As ye have therefore received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk ye in Him.
The Jesus Christ that we have to accept now is not a man. First Jesus is the way. Agree? So what is that way? Continue 7

Coloss. 2:7 Rooted and built up in Him, and established in the faith, as ye have been taught, abounding therin with thanksgiving.

See. As ye have been taught. What is that ? The teaching. This is what are we going to accept.
I cor. 15:1 I declare to you the gospel, which also ye have received… 2 by which also ye are saved, if ye keep in memory.
If ye keep in memory not just believing the gospel.

To make it short. If by just believing we are saved then do not use the scriptures ,for we are saved by just believing. Do not use the scriptures if by just believing in Him you are saved.

That’s why we were given the scriptures. I timo. 3:16

You’ve mentioned lot of verses in Romans. But you know the meaning of that?

Romans 2:8-9 For by grace you have been saved p through faith, and that not of yourselves; q it is the gift of God, 9 not of r works, lest anyone should s boast.

Should Continue up to 10 For we are t His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand that we should walk in them.

What does rom. 2:8-9 mean. Works that is under the law of Moses. That cannot justify us. But we are now under the Law of Christ.

  18. I can appreciate what you are saying but it seems to me that you are just a little mixed up my dear.

We LEARN from the teachings of Christ.

We GROW from the teachings of Christ.

We become better Christians from the teaching of Christ.

BUT those things did not save us. They allow us to be knowledgable, and to know more about Christ and what God thinks BUT it is the death burial and resurrection of the man Christ Jesus that saves us.

He is our advocate and great high priest before God in heaven today....BUT it was only by His death and resurrection that made that possible NOT His teachings on such things.

Now.........we are not under the Law today.

Reanne...........the law was not given to save anyone and it never saved anyone at all. It was given to be our school master so that we would see how depraved we are and that we would turn to the great sacrifice given by the Lord Jesus Christ on the Cross where He gave His life for YOU.

YOU are just like ME. We can not keep the law. You can talk all day about the law and how we must keep it to be saved but the reality of life is that we can not keep the law and that is why Jesus died for us.

Jesus is the 2nd PERSON of the Trinity and it is He that sits today in heaven, the GOD-MAN
    100% God and 100% man.

By the way.......The Jehovah Witnesses are NOT Christian. They are an anti-Christ cult who deny the diety of Christ, and the Trinity. They also believe in keeping the Law.

  19. OOO my goodness.

    Bless you my sister.

Please begin going to a Christian church that has Sunday morning Bible study . It will be a tremendouse help to you.

We are not in Rev. 6:9 as that is the 5th Seal of the Tribulation which has 7 Seals.

  20. Should let me finish first.

No, The works that is being said there in Eph. 2:8-9 is the law of Moses that cannot justify us. Proof

Romans 3:28 Therefore we conclude that a man is justified by faith without the deeds of the law.-It is the law of Moses. Was talking about the law that cannot justify us

Because he was talking to those Pharisees who boast their works even in their prayer for giving 10% of their income, for fasting twice a week, etc..

And these are the works that is abomination in the sight of God
Luke 16:15and he said unto them, Ye are they which justify yourselves before men; but God knoweth your hearts: for that which is highly esteemed among men is abomination in the sight of God.”

But if you continue 10 For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them.

Meaning there are works, which are good works that we need to walk through them, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them. Can you say that it is abomination in the sight of God.? No, for he prepared it for us to walk that way.

And in Romans 3:28 –He was talking to two laws here. The law of Moses that cannot justify us And the law of Christ, which is the law of faith. And we are under the law of Christ these days.

And we are commanded to fulfill the law of Christ. Not just believing
Galatians 6:2 Bear ye one another’s burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ.
We need to work out our own salvation. Phil 2:12

And what you believe that by just believing we are saved is wrong.
Gal 3:11-12 But that no man is justified by the law in the sight of God, it is evident: for, The just shall live by faith. 12 And the law is not of faith: but, The man that doeth them shall live in them.
