Sabbath 1/16/16 Daytona SDB Church Pastor Wray sermon “Blood, Oil, Earlobes, Thumbs and Toes! What Do They Have in Common?” Luke 17:11-19, Lev. 14:1-20

There have been sermons about the ten lepers but the Law of Moses about the cleansing of leprosy is not mentioned. The cleansing in Leviticus points to Jesus. The ten lepers called to Jesus to have pity on them and heal them. This He did and cleansed them all. Only one turned back and praised God for his cleansing and healing. The one who did was a Samaritan, a foreigner. Only he gave thanks to God and Jesus told him that his faith had saved him.

When we read this, we think that all they have to do is go show the priest their cleansing. They are also to offer a sacrifice for lepers cleansing. Lev 4:25. The priest puts the blood of the sacrifice on their earlobe, thumb and toes. The priest is to put oil on the earlobes and other places too. This ritual sounds strange but it’s what God said to do because He is a God of Order. Leprosy is symbolic of sin. So the healing of sin is like healing of leprosy. Sin is like leprosy because it starts small but then it spreads over the body. The blood cleanses us from sin. The Law requires that everything be covered with blood. It’s the blood of Jesus that cleanses us from our sin. Jesus was a lamb without blemish to be given as sacrifice for the salvation of the world.

The meaning of the oil in the Old Testament is representative of the Holy Spirit. In the New Testament, the oil is replaced by the Holy Spirit. The blood of Jesus is applied then the oil is applied. The oil is the filling of God’s Holy Spirit and the blood is the forgiveness of sin from Jesus. Blood comes first, Oil comes second on top of blood.

Ear, Thumb and Big Toe:

Ear: Receive instructions from the Lord. Hear the Word of God once you are forgiven for your sins. In the Bible days, hearing the Word of God was important because they didn’t have the printed Torah in people’s homes.

Thumb: The thumb means we are to work for the Lord. Do the work for the kingdom. Do what the Word says. Don’t just hear the Word and do nothing! Obey God’s precepts and work for the Lord.

Big Toe: God wants us to walk in the path of righteousness. God wants us to go down His road. The road of life in Christ. God wants us to walk the path of righteousness and enter in by the Narrow gate. Jesus said enter in by the Narrow gate and not go in through the Wide gate because it leads to destruction. Jesus said the Narrow gate is the way!

Jesus’s blood has been shed for our salvation. The Holy Spirit has been given to us to lead holy lives in obedience to God. Salvation is first then Sanctification is second. Are you saved? Are you living a holy life thru the Holy Spirit? Once we get this way, we will be anxious to hear and understand the Word of the Lord! If God tells us something, we have to do it! In 2015, did you live your life working for the Kingdom of God or more for yourself? In 2016, we must live our lives walking in the path laid out for us by Jesus and God our Father.

AMEN
