Do we have the right to refuse jobs on moral/ethical/religious grounds?

Yes, and the funny thing is that whenever I've walked out of a job I've felt bad at first, (and on a couple of occasions near to tears) because it's such a major thing in anybody's life and you feel lost and lonely, but after a few days the feeling passes and you feel full of beans and ready for a fresh start and realise that walking out was a great decision..:)
"This is what the Lord says...
Forget the former things;
do not dwell on the past.
See, I am doing a new thing!
Now it springs up; do you not perceive it?
I am making a way in the desert
and streams in the wasteland"
(Isaiah 43:16-19)

My dear brother. The bottom line is that every single one of us must be fully persuaded in our own mind what is acceptable and what is not.
If you were at peace with your decision then IMO that is from the Holy Spirit which guides us into those correct choices.

Rom. 14:14.......
"I know and am persuaded in the Lord Jesus that nothing is unclean in itself, but it is unclean for anyone who thinks it unclean."

..I hope you find a satisfying job soon. :)

Thanks but I'm in my 60's and retired, and probably won't work again because retirement is a never-ending coffee break! The only "work" I do is spreading Christianity in internet forums, it's unpaid of course but is the most satisfying "job" I've ever had.
I've come a long way since I left school in 1963 and my dad used to hammer on my bedroom door at the crack of dawn yelling "Come on get out of bed and look for a job, they're crying out for people at the glue factory"..:)

I am right there with you my brother. I am much older but the have the same attitude as do you.

God bless you and keep up the good work of getting out the Word of God.

Ah I see. :coffee:
I hope you are enjoying retirement! I am only 22 so I have many years of work ahead of me.

That's what Missionaries are called for - but in some ways we can also apply this to ourselves e.g my new workplace has alot of non believers and I believe I've been put there for a reason - there's a group of us who meet up and have Devotions and we pray for them who are lost. It's a battle of the spirit indeed - some days I have them say "God doesn't exist" and that they believe there's no God. At the moment I'm holding my tongue and praying to God for a time (his time not mine) for when I can share with them about the Gospel - in saying that, it might not even be that I will have the opportunity to share with them - but God knows.

I have to be careful in what and when I can share with them as I don't want them to be put off the Gospel and close the door of Salvation - so I'm definitely relying and trusting in the Holy Spirit to lead me :)

Here we have to be very cautious when sharing the gospel at work due to the ability of getting in trouble for it. If someone is offended or or does not want to hear what you have to say...they can go and talk to human resources and one could be disciplined. So it's best to form a relationship with the person(s), and be praying and then as you said wait for the Spirit's leading.

Blessings

Very true. Employers hire you to do a job for them and not to talk to others about your faith. Those of us who have worked for a Christian boss are very fortunate but even then there are limits.

This issue must sometimes affect many Christians:-
Suppose you're unemployed and the Jobcentre tells you to apply for a particular job, but the work is against your moral/ethical/religious principles, what would you do?
Would you politely refuse to apply and carry on drawing dole money, or would you grudgingly apply even though you find the work distasteful?
I was placed in exactly that dilemma about 8 years ago when the Jobcentre "required" me to apply for a job in a local convenience store, so I toddled happily along for interview.
But when I arrived I saw the booze, tobacco, and porn mags on the shelves and began to have doubts and thought "I don't want to handle and sell that stuff!"
The manageress must have picked up on my lack of enthusiasm during the interview and concluded with "Thank you, we'll let you know", but I never heard from her again and breathed a sigh of relief.
PS- I've attached a poll to this post because polls are fun, hope I've done it right..:)
Well the porn mags was the issue there imho. All else was ok. God needs us in such places. Even though there may be major unemployment, I don't believe there is ever unemployment for Christians. God needs us in certain places now more then ever.

I am sure if you wanted and prayed for a job, God would definitely find a place for you to work at. Pauls words in 1 Cor 5, especially ''9 I wrote to you in my letter not to associate with sexually immoral people— 10 not at all meaning the people of this world who are immoral, or the greedy and swindlers, or idolaters. In that case you would have to leave this world.'' keeps going through my mind. It is such an immense truth for us believers.

Thanks for the responses in this and my other threads people, but I'm moving on to other forums.
I've only been a member here for a few weeks and mods have already deleted one of my posts and closed down two of my threads, so there's no point in me remaining a member if jittery mods are going to keep jumping on me..:)

Greetings Klang ,
As I have mentioned this to you before that it was the topics you just happen to choose to write about. Both topics as I let you know early on were 2 topics that have Repeatedly brought harshness and have worn thin in the forum.

I also let you know that they could get closed if nit picking or arguing began to take place. So you ought not be taking it as mods coming after you but rather Realize that what others say or do in your thread Can cause them to be shut down.

So I am asking you to put an end to this and shake the dust off and let it go. To stay or move on is your choice but I Truly Hope you stick around here and give CFS a chance. :)
God Bless
FCJ

Just because they delete your threads doesn't mean that they disagree with you or hate you lol :) I think the Mods are doing what they need to do in order to keep the peace. If you have an issue I'm sure you can pm them and they'd be happy to discuss.

Also, I think the topics you post are very interesting:) be sad for you to part if you feel as such.

Blessings.

I concur; the Moderators have a job to do and sometimes they need to remove posts or close topics to keep the forums friendly.

Definitely a tough one to answer, but I think I'd say no and move on to the next thing. We have to vote with our wallet-books (don't buy things made by slaves in sweatshops, etc.) in the same way we have to stand tall in what we believe in. I think it would be like working in a strip club or brothel. Maybe those two examples are extremes, but I think we get the point.
