Holy Spirit

I was depressed tonight and so decided I'd do a study. I went to the book shelf and what stuck out to me was a book called "The Person and Work of The Holy Spirit," by R.A. Torrey. It helped me so much that I wanted to share with you all.

I realized from the first paragraph that I didn't really know who the H.S. was. I thought of Him just as a spirit sent from God to comfort us. A lesser diety, merely a mystereous but wonderful power not to be fully understood. I know He dwells inside of me, but did not have the comprehension of how huge that was.
This author says He is a person whom I can pray to and become as intimate with as I do my Heavenly Father.

I hope this author is a good one and not just talking from his head. If I am deceived, I'm sure someone will let me know.

He gave 4 different passages of scripture that gives the characteristics of a person. All the destinctive characteristics of personality are ascribed to the H.S. in the Bible. Marks of personality: knowledge, feelings/emotions, will, and concern.

He knows the things of man . . . the spirit of God: Knowledge:
1Co 2:10 But God has revealed them to us through His Spirit. For the Spirit searches all things, yes, the deep things of God. 1Co 2:11 For what man knows the things of a man except the spirit of the man which is in him? Even so no one knows the things of God except the Spirit of God.

He has a will: He uses us according to His will. He is willing to take possession of us and use us according to His own perfect will: 1Co 12:11 But one and the same Spirit works all these things, distributing to each one individually as He wills.

He has a mind - the ideas of thought, feelings, and purpose: Rom 8:7 Because the carnal mind is enmity against God; for it is not subject to the law of God, nor indeed can be.

He prays for us: Rom 8:27 Now He who searches the hearts knows what the mind of the Spirit is, because He makes intercession for the saints according to the will of God.

Rom 8:26
Likewise the Spirit also helps in our weaknesses. For we do not know what we should pray for as we ought, but the Spirit Himself makes intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered. Now, I'm not sure if He does this for me because this may be what's called speaking in tongues, which I don't do, but I hope He is making intercession for me.

We have two divine persons praying for us - Jesus Christ, the Son and the Holy Spirit. Heb 7:25 Therefore He is also able to save to the uttermost those who come to God through Him, since He always lives to make intercession for them. 1Jn 2:1 My little children, these things I write to you, so that you may not sin. And if anyone sins, we have an Advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous.

We should feel secure in this knowledge.
Joh 15:26"But when the Helper comes, whom I shall send to you from the Father, the Spirit of truth who proceeds from the Father, He will testify of Me.Joh 15:27And you also will bear witness, because you have been with Me from the beginning. So, there are two witnesses, the Holy Spirit bearing wittness to the believer and the believer bearing wittness to the world.

Here's the "biggy" I've learned, found in 1Jn 2:27 "But the anointing which you have received from Him abides in you, and you do not need that anyone teach you; but as the same anointing teaches you concerning all things, and is true, and is not a lie, and just as it has taught you, you will abide in Him!!"

Isn't that just EXCITING?! (Emphasis mine!) :p I had a problem in the past of believing what I was told and always going to the Elders of that church to get my understanding, until I started looking in the Word to find answers. And then, of course, I found this forum, but I take myself away at times to search scripture.

I know most of you reading this know all this stuff, but it is so revealing to me and just what I need to be taught - from the Holy Spirit, who will be my friend and confidant from now on.
We owe our salvation just as truly to the love of the Holy Spirit as we do to the love of the Father and Son.

Oh, and off the subject, I found another confirmation about the Trinity in Joh 17:11Now I am no longer in the world, but these are in the world, and I come to You. Holy Father, keep through Your name those whom You have given Me, that they may be one as We are.
So far, from this study, I have made a decision to ammend my ways in three areas: 1) to stop joining my husband in any bar specifically to drink because my spirit is disquieted by the words I hear blaspheming God and grieving the Holy Spirit; 2) To stop or walk out of a movie when I feel it is not something I would want to take the Holy Spirit to; and 3) Stop going to casinos with my husband for the same reason.

These have all been areas of concern since surrendering to God. My excuse has been that I didn't want to cause a rift in my marriage, but now I will consider it to be a wittness to Norm and I am asking the H.S. to draw him in that direction also.

To end this, here is something I have heard every week after church, but I thought it was just a prayer. I found in this book where it is found in scripture.

2Co 13:14 The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with you all. Amen.

Thank you for this post. I too have had a problem comprehending who the Holy Spirit really is. I know and somewhat understand, but can’t really “wrap my mind around it”, so to speak. I may just have to pick up that book.

Blessings

Or, you might have to do a study of your own, Dean, and discover how the Holy Spirit living inside you leads to new truths. Blessings

The Holy Spirit is our paraclete or the One who walks beside us. He is our closest friend, our teacher, our guide, our helper and much more. He empowers us, fills us, draws us, leads us, speaks to us and it is He the very Living Spirit of God that dwells within us. He is the one who reveals the Father to us, He is the one who reveals the Son to us, He is the one who reveals the Word to us, without His leading and empowerment we can do nothing of eternal value. He is indeed the very ressurection power of God that comes into our spirit when we are born again.
We are not to grieve Him. Even though He is God, He is gentle and leads with a still small voice, a drawing and a conviction in our spirit. He is so precious to God that the Father only sent Him to us after Jesus prayed and asked. He is not to be quenched. He is able to do miracles, He is not limited by anything but this- He will not respond to doubt and unbelief. How many times has a work of the Holy Spirit been dismissed and/or demonized but lost or religious persons. He is willing and able and longs to move BUT He will not allow man to dictate His moves. How many times has revival come only to be quenched by man's efforts to control, plan and direct such a move. None but God get the glory. He is God and we are to follow His lead and not the other way around. Some build great programs and then ask for His help but a true servant asks for His lead and follows completely yielded to God's plan.
He is in my life the most precious person and greatest treasure my heart can comprehend and He is the very love of my life. He is God.

Wonderful! Wonderful! Wonderful!

How wonderful it is that you are seeking and learning about the Holy Spirit!

He longs to reveal Himself to you! He loves it when you search and ask questions and read books that were written under the guidance of the Holy Spirit! The Word says to Ask, Seek, and Knock. Be persistent. Be diligent.
But the best way is to read for yourself and ask the Holy Spirit to reveal Himself to you. Its good to get counsel when you cant hear God for yourself. But the best way is to learn to hear His voice and distinguish it from yourself and the enemy. To get quiet before Him and let Him speak to you. You may find that the first sentence is: I LOVE YOU.

Shouldn't we pray only to God?

That's what I always thought, Violet. Until I read this book and then I realized that if this Spirit is living in me and knows my thoughts and all about me, shouldn't we be intimate with eachother and talk with eachother? What do all of you think?

Is the holy spirit the part of the trinity that lives in us when we ask Jesus into our hearts??

Yes, da-man. At least that is what I've learned. I've yet to learn about the infilling of the H.S. with tongues, but I think it is the same H.S. But, yes we are given the H.S. to live in us at the time of Salvation also. Oops! Am I wrong? Somebody?

First neither the Father, the Son or the Holy Spirit are jealous of each other. THe SPirit helps us pray as we ought. God will hear your prayer. God gives us a new spirit at rebirth. This is were the Holy Spirit communes with us.

Just to add Bro larry, what you have said which is true. I believe He delight and that His job, He deally Love to Jesus to us John 15:26, that is why a person who is indwelt by the Holy Spirit, would have to just speak about Lord Jesus and tell people about Him, as the Spirit compels Him. Without the Holy Spirit we would not confess Jesus or call God, Abba Father or we would not know How to pray or pray at all.We would not know all the truth about God and the Gospel, that is why He teaches us. So why would He be Jealous? Why will be Father be Jealous? and why would Jesus be Jealous? You are right my brother they are not jealous of each other.Because this is the perfect plan of the Godhead to have fellowship with us through our new man (new spirit), which God has made us to be, the old man has been crucified and pass away. Love manifest itsel by Grace which produce perfect Felowship full of Joy, that is the reason. The Spirit compels Paul to write "May Grace of Lord Jesus and Love of God and Fellwship of the Holy Spirit be with you all"

Also we should not run away to the fact they are One, with One common goal to redeem and reconcile mankind to God.Isn't God wondeful? I just Love Him.Amen

Actually, I realized that the Holy Spirit the book is talking about is the one that causes you to speak in tongues. I don't know how to put it. I thought it was the Holy Spirit that comes into your heart when you surrender your life to Christ. I know there are not two Holy Spirits, but I haven't figured out how that works yet. I'm still reading. So, sorry, I still got a lot of good out of it and still am thirsty for more. Like I confided in some of you, I don't know if I believe in tongues, but if God reveals that to me through this book, well then, I guess I don't have a choice in the matter. :p Maybe someone can shed some light on the salvation and tongues Holy Spirit for me. :(

i can,t speak in tongues.that i know of anyway.my comunication is through spirit,i ask and sometimes am told.i pray ,to find out things.and share lots of what i get.i try to be as truthful as i can.i was very ill,but know getting better.:)

From hearing: "Walk in the Spirit"

I visualize this:

You know the efffect they use in some shows/movies/commercials where a person walks out of themself, sometimes as a ghost once they're dead. Well picture that ghost type thing, but you are able to see it, and have to try to stay in it, so you're actions are one with it. Figuratively of course. That's what that phrase "Walk in the Spirit" makes me think.

And yet walking in the Spirit is the ONLY true expression of Christ in a believers life. Any action outside of this is tainted by the flesh and is but a filthy rag in the Father's eyes. Jesus walked totally led by and empowered by the Spirit as an example to us.

Gal 5:16
This I say then, Walk in the Spirit, and ye shall not fulfil the lust of the flesh.
Gal 5:17 For the flesh lusteth against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh: and these are contrary the one to the other: so that ye cannot do the things that ye would.
Gal 5:18 But if ye be led of the Spirit, ye are not under the law.

The Holy Spirit IS God, the third person of the trinity, the same God as the Father and the same God as His Son Jesus. When we repent and believe in Jesus as our Savior it is the Holy Spirit who comes to reside in our bodies with our spirit. Our body is the Temple of the Holy Spirit. The still, small voice that we hear, the conviction of sin that we feel, the annointing that empowers us to bring forth His gifts are all the work of the Holy Spirit. Thankyou Father for this wonderful gift!

In Christ, Boyd
