2008 Named Storm; 'Bertha'

Discussion in 'Tropical Systems' started by Pastor Gary, Jul 4, 2008.

  1. 2008 Named Storm; 'Bertha'

TROPICAL STORM BERTHA As anticipated earlier this week, this second named storm of the 2008 Atlantic Tropical Storm and Hurricane Season formed out of the tropical wave near the Cape Verde Islands. The storm is tracking west-northwest with winds at 48 MPH gusting to near 60 mph. This storm will gain in strength and may become the first Hurricane of the 2008 Atlantic season. However, since the upper level steering currents are running southwest to northeast, this storm will move generally westerly until the middle of next week and then move northerly - away from Carribean and US coastal interests. It will stay over Atlantic waters throughout it's lifespan and will only be affecting shipping lanes.
This storm's progress will be monitored, but we will not post additional information unless it does make hurricane strength or takes a completely unanticipated track.

  2. Tropical Storm Bertha

UPDATE: This storm has shifted more southerly in the past 12 hours and will not be affected as much by the upper level winds. It continues to strengthen slightly and will be moving in a westerly track longer than first anticipated.

We will continue to monitor this storm and will update as necessary.

  3. Tropical Storm Bertha

The storm continues to strengthen and continues to move west northwest. This storm is now taking a track that COULD POSSIBLY bring it near US coastal interests during the early to mid part of the week of July 14. This storm and the other weather systems that will be interacting with it are preventing accurate computer storm track predictions at this time. However, persons along the entire eastern coast of the US as well as Hispaniola, Bermuda and the Bahamas should be aware of the possibilities. While we are not predicting a US coastal landfall at this time, that is a possibility. We will monitor this storm and post additional information as necessary.

  4. HURRICANE BERTHA

The storm is now a Category 1 Hurricane with sustained winds at over 90 MPH and gusts to 115 MPH. This storm will intensify to Category 2 status late tonight... and possibly higher.

Bertha is once again encountering the stronger upper level steering currents and should make a turn to the north within 2 to 3 days. This will bring the hurricane very close to Bermuda this weekend and persons in Bermuda are being asked to monitor this storm carefully because of it's erratic storm track thus far.

We will post additional unofficial information as warranted. However, for up to the minute details on this and any other Tropical Systems, use the NOAA link below.

  5. HURRICANE BERTHA

The storm is now a major hurricane at Category 3 strength with sustained winds near 123 MPH with higher gusts. Bertha is now making the anticipated turn to the north and will be going over slightly cooler waters soon which will partially shut off it's energy source, so weakening is anticipated over the next 60 hours. Persons vacationing in or near Bermuda are being asked to call ahead to see if airline and cruise ship schedules are being affected. The storm will be just east of Bermuda this weekend.

Additional information will be providied in these unofficial updates as needed. For current information, use the link below to the National Hurricane Prediction Center in Miami.

  6. HURRICANE BERTHA

The computer tracking and projection models are showing a northward and north-eastward turn after the weekend and weakening after 48 to 60 hours from now. The storm is in a reorganization mode and may strengthen in the short term, but this will not last. Since the computer models are almost all in agreement, this will be our LAST Hurricane Bertha update UNLESS a significant or unanticipated turn to the west takes place.
