It is supposed to help "stimulate" the economy.... so they call it a "stimulus" check. In theory, people are supposed to go shopping.

Dusty - I'd be violating our regulations if I attempt to explain it fully here in the open forum, because it is a very POLITICAL program. Let me just say this - you KNOW which political party is in control of the US Congress right now. Do a little research into their agenda, policies and demeanor and you will see that the general tradition of that party is as liberals. Liberalism is a concept that wishes to make the playing field for everyone equal with a redistribution of wealth and government being the instrument to accomplish that. However, in so doing, that political party manipulates laws, judicial rulings, media and people into following their way of doing things in loud, boisterous, lie filled rhetoric. If someone keeps hearing the same lie over and over, they sometimes start to believe it - and THAT is what the political party in question is very good at.

The 'economic stimulus' program was a way (according to them) to give all taxpayers in the US a little 'government gift' during a minor economic recession, so as to add some revenue in the average family's bank account. What they are not saying publicly, is that this 'program' was contrived and planned JUST BEFORE a US national election for President of the United States to essentially BUY VOTES for that party. That is something else that the party in question does frequently.

For those persons who have been taken in by that party and the media that they control, this 'gift' was a very nice gesture and will be remembered in the voting booth. For those who are wise to the antics of that party and can see through their manipulations of people, this extra cash was an INSULT, but they had no way to either refuse it or to send it back.

I have mentioned no political party names here - just concepts. Please do your own independent research into the philosophies of both US political parties and come to your own conclusions.

I got my laptop! Yay! *Does a cartwheel*

It's an HP Pavilion dv6000. It does everything under the sun, and when I push the side a little bitty remote controller pops out. I've never had a computer with 3MB of RAM before!

It has a wide-screen view. And the keys are so nice and quiet. Like typing on marshmallows.

All's I can say is that I'm not complaining. My last laptop was duct-taped together. While I had the resources to buy another one...this one made it seem like a gift. A blessing.

I promise to only use my new powers for the forces of good.

$300 -$600! Wow, that'll pay the mortgage for what, one or two weeks!

I would suggest saving it too - but hey, I'd probably end up spending some just the same.

I do not know how it works in Canada. In the USA all the government can do is to give you your own money back. They have nothing to "give" unless they first take it from someone.

LOL - that's true, Bo...too true.

We Indians on the reservation have a saying. We only have one white uncle, and his name is Sam. He's rich, but he's tight, hee hee. Well...my good ole Uncle Sam bought me a laptop. I'm awfully proud of it!

Only thing is...Vista. Windows Vista. Arrrgh! I hate it! Everything has changed. Things are harder to find. It asks me permissiont do every little operation. There's too many things fading out and scrolling in. It's like running a flying saucer instead of trying to get some work done, hee hee.

But I'll get used to it. I always do. I held onto 98 for as long as I could, and then jumped to XP with a grudge. Now XP and me are best friends. I'll get to know Vista. Sooner or later.

By accident, I pressed a button on the side of my laptop and a remote control popped out! A remote control! And you put in a disk, write your files onto it, eject it, flip the disk over, and it burns your label for you with silk-screen quality printing! Now how do they do that?

This is like borrowing someone's car and finding out half-way thorugh your trip that there's too many buttons and readouts for you to enjoy in one trip.
