Does God stop us from having the things we want

One time on the radio I was listening to a Christian chat program. The host was in his 60's and had a friend around the same age who had never been married. This man believes that the reason his friend is not married is because God doesn't want him to be. Do you agree with this? If a person want's something like a wife or a certain job and does not get it even though they keep trying and trying, is it possible god could be preventing them from having the thing they want?

That's not a yes or no question.
It depends on what God's plans were for some one but most likely the individual simply missed God in that particular area.

Depending upon the desire... if it's holy or evil... is a good indication as to where it came from and will let one know if it's something The Father will grant or not. It also depends upon if they believe The Father will grant it or not.

Even if something is The Fathers will and is in His Word, and the person does not believe that it's His will, they will not receive what they desire.

I've heard it said that prayer is not to change God's mind but to change our mind.
Changing our mind doesn't necessarily mean a change in direction but in focus.
I believe a wife and family and even prosperity is a wonderful thing. God wants good things for His children.
But it holds true that God is more interested in our character than our comfort.
So if we are sick, why do we want to get better? (sickness is of the evil one and not God's will) Simply to feel better is not quite the right answer. To serve the Lord better is the proper motive and objective.
So perhaps it is not right to ask the Lord why can't I have this or that but instead if we can truly say 'Thy will be done' it may mean we are properly positioned to receive.

Also, being that the glories on the other side so greatly outweigh the benefits and trials on this side perhaps the Lord's will may not taste so good on this side.
For the Word does say that the book was sweet in the mouth but bitter in the stomach...

God preventing someone from having something: I would be concerned if we only lived on easy street for we know that every child of God must be tutored and trained...
