Sabbath 8/19/17 Seventh Day Baptist Edgewater Pastor Keith sermon “A Snake in the Garden”

Sabbath 8/19/17 Seventh Day Baptist Edgewater Pastor Keith sermon “A Snake in the Garden” Genesis 3:1-6, 1 John 2:15-17, Romans 7:15-25

I often say to young people “what if you knew nothing about sin?” Adam & Eve walked in the garden with God and knew nothing about sin. In our text, Adam & Eve made the choice to disobey God and ate the fruit. Later they hid themselves from God because they had disobeyed. We also hide ourselves from God when we have disobeyed. Satan’s mission was to rob Eve of the little bible….the little Word of God she had. Eve told the snake that God had said if they ate the fruit of the tree of knowledge, they would die. Satan used three things on Eve: Doubt, Denial and Delusion.

Doubt: Has God really said that if you eat the fruit you will die? Who told you this? It was Adam who had told this to Eve so the snake had her to doubt Adam as well as God.

Denial: The snake said Eve wouldn’t die from eating some fruit. Fruit is good for you. God loves you and won’t kill you over some little fruit.

Delusion: God knows you will be like Him if you eat the fruit. Don’t be afraid of it. Its life in a new dimension. You will get all this great knowledge.

**This fruit has the appeal of her eyes: pretty fruit.

**This fruit had the appeal of her flesh: food to eat.

**This fruit had the appeal of the pride of life: get smart like God.

1 John2:15-17 = Do not love the world or the things of the world. The lust of the flesh, lust of the eyes and the pride of life is NOT of God the father.

Temptation: This starts with seeing something and liking it. Then the seeing turns into lust for it. When we are confronted with temptation, we can RUN from it!! Run from it like Joseph did when he ran away from Potiphar’s wife. Satan can only tempt us or suggest things to us. He cannot… Satan CANNOT make you do anything!! He can’t push you into nothing. That old saying “Satan made me do it” is a LIE!!

Sins: These are bad habits that grow until they take over the will of man. This continues until we find ourselves in chains of sin. In the scriptures Romans 7:15-25, there is a constant battle between the flesh and the mind. The person wanting to do right but doing wrong instead.

In our Genesis text, Satan got Eve to sin so she could tempt Adam to sin. Then death reigned over all mankind. Back then Satan had the victory. But then when Jesus Christ came, He defeated the serpent. Jesus went to the Word, quoted scriptures and Satan lost because he couldn’t tempt Jesus. Jesus Christ did the will of God. We all need Jesus to help us be free from the chains of sin. We must stay in the Word of God and walk with the Lord. Jesus CAN deliver us from sin and death!! Thank God for Jesus!!!

AMEN
