US Signs on to Arab Peace Plan
US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice formally signed on to the Arab Peace Initiative of 2002 during a visit to Riyadh on Tuesday [July 31]. Traveling with Defense Secretary Robert Gates, Rice signed a joint statement along with Saudi Arabia and six other Gulf states that declared the Arab plan to be one of the foundations for Middle East peace. Although Israeli leaders have made positive statements regarding the plan—which until now had been totally rejected by Israeli governments—the current form of the plan includes reference to a Palestinian "right of return" that Israel considers a deal-breaker. It is not clear how Rice's signature on the joint statement affects the American position on that point. Rice's signature also raises another potential point of conflict with Israel because the statement calls for making the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty universal for all nations: a pointed jab at Israel, which has refused to join. Rice arrives in Jerusalem on Wednesday. There, she will hold talks with Prime Minister Ehud Olmert, Foreign Minister Tzipi Livni and Defense Minister Ehud Barak. In Ramallah, she will meet with Palestinian Authority Chairman Mahmoud Abbas [Abu Mazen] and other leaders. Atop the agenda will be US President George W. Bush's call for an international Middle East peace conference to be held in New York or Washington in September. (By TML Staff, The Media Line, August 1, 2007) Prayer Focus Every peace plan includes “deal breakers.” Pray that Israel will not change their stance on those non-negotiable issues. Pray that the fear of God will fall upon the nations who pressure Israel to give away their God-given inheritance. Pray that Israel will not be like Esau and despise their inheritance. Scripture “For the LORD your God is bringing you into a good land, a land of brooks of water, of fountains and springs, that flow out of valleys and hills’ a land of wheat and barley, of vines and fig trees and pomegranates, a land of olive oil and honey; a land in which you will eat bread without scarcity, in which you will lack nothing…” (Deuteronomy 8:7-9a).
