so many students drinking!

ok so being drunk is bad because you lost control of yourself and then you can do things wherein you don't have control anymore. and that's shameful. got it.

what about social drinking? does being tipsy count as already being drunk?

sorry i have so many questions

Without questions we would get nowhere. Asking questions is caring.

Here's the story with me and alcohol. I was actually stupid enough to get drunk once. Prom night protest we called it. We (my friends and I) thought it would be cool since we think the drinking age law is unfair to get drunk on prom night. What the heck happened to me then? I am a Christian now, and I was then too. I was obviously a weaker one then because I let my friends rub off on me and all the wanting to do all that high school experimenting crap get the best of me. I didn't put God first that night. About a month later I noticed I had some left over and I was depressed. So I let myself go that night as well. I only had one but again the alcohol caused me to put God 2nd and the "magic juice" first. I have snapped out of that "worshipping drinking is okay." Having a glass or two now is okay in my opinion as long as I'm not using it as mental medicine or to force myself to be happier. It is just a drink and needs to be treated as just that.

The main lessons to learn are don't do nothin stupid. A sin is a sin, but where you really need to draw the line is don't make an unfixable mistake. Don't even think about driving or riding with someone. A sin can be forgiven. Your life cannot be replaced. Hold on to your virginity if you can, you'll feel much better about your dignity and you committment to God with it. I sure know I did.

The other lesson is try not to mentally deny something. You can't get into a habbit of having drinks and start getting drunk on a regular basis and expect to be forgiven every time. God judges us on our committment to him, and consistantly ignoring changes that need to be made are what make you. If you are in a rut you need to be making progress or at least trying, and when not in a rut, make effort to stay out of them.

These verses are a perfect example of what my life was like for years. It was painful, but I kept doing if over and over again… day after day after day…
Can you say, “insanity”?

So don’t feel bad that you were stupid enough to get drunk once. A rough estimate for me… I was stupid enough to get drunk about 5,000 times. Satan had me right where he wanted me for years.
HA!!!!! Jokes on him now. He already lost and I know it, and I let him know I know it. He can’t make me do anything.

Proverbs 23:29-35
29 Who has woe? Who has sorrow? Who has strife? Who has complaints? Who has needless bruises? Who has bloodshot eyes?
30 Those who linger over wine, who go to sample bowls of mixed wine.
31 Do not gaze at wine when it is red, when it sparkles in the cup, when it goes down smoothly!
32 In the end it bites like a snake and poisons like a viper.
33 Your eyes will see strange sights and your mind imagine confusing things.
34 You will be like one sleeping on the high seas, lying on top of the rigging.
35 "They hit me," you will say, "but I'm not hurt! They beat me, but I don't feel it! When will I wake up so I can find another drink?"

It's sad that it's become the norm in college...the "thing to do" on Friday nights. And it's even sadder that the drinkers make the people who don't drink seem like some alien from another planet. "You don't drink?" Then they give you a look.

I've been there many times...

There are plenty of empty hearts longing to be filled. They need the New Wine.

Oh my gosh! I didn't know all that was in Psalms! Whoever wrote it even knew about the bruises! Whoa!

Hey, Who, I like your new pic. Someone must have advised you! :p Shows your blue eyes. Heehee.

here is my view on drinking. getting drunk is a sin. i believe that everybody here would agree with that. drinking itself, though, is not a sin. when you get drunk, you lose control. both the things you do and the loss of control itself is sinful. if you are going to drink, then you need to know your limits, and make sure you stick to them. if you can't do that, then don't do it at all. don't ever put yourself in a situation you can't handle. try having a drink at home. then two. see what is your limit. drink slowly so you will feel the affects as they come and can judge when you are feeling tipsy.

on another note, you should also watch who you drink around. as christians, we are called to not only look out for our own well being, but also that of our neighbors. that doesn't mean you have to pay their bills and take care of their kids and do everything for those around you, but it does mean you put them before youself. if you know somebody that has trouble with drinking is with you, then don't drink. don't even suggest it, as you will tempt them. also, i would suggest not drinking at bars. the reason for that is this: even though you may be able to control youself, others will not see it that way. if they know you are christian and see you drinking at a bar, they will probably assume you are there to get drunk. its just a steriotype. that doesn't make it right, but you should care about setting a good example. sometimes we have to make sacrifices for the good of others. have a drink with a meal, or maybe have a beer with some friends after work, but don't go out to get drunk. encourage those around you, christian and non-christian alike, and you will set a good example for others.

I think if you at all feel that your heart is not pure and you aren't truly focused on God and his love, then you have had too much to drink.

My female friend asked me to go to the bar with her this Friday. I told her I quit drinking. She kept asking why, and then finally said okay, but you should come to keep me company. Now I know she's thinking "yea right, if he comes to the bar, and if someone buys him a drink, he'll drink." But I'm going to spend time in prayer and worship on Friday, and then actually go to the bar with them. I will not drink, I have NO worry of being tempted, praise the Lord! I am not going there because I really want to, I honestly feel I will do good work for God there, somehow. I want to be there in the Spirit and do whatever God asks me to. I live for Him now, let it be known!

Complete and total love and commitment for the Lord is the only way! Believe me he will bless you for just DROPPING COMPLETELY the thought of drinking!

Love,

Mark

I'm glad there's a thread on this. Drinking is the one thing in my life atm that I'm truly not sure if it's a sin or not, but I still do it.:( I used to get drunk as often as I could when I was 16-18. Now that I'm 19 and Jesus has changed the desires of my heart (when I asked Him to be the Master of my life) I rareley get so drunk that I can't rememeber it the next day, but I'm ashamed to say that when I am feeling "down" or when I want to forget things that my brain keeps making me think of, I often buy alcohol and drink it until I "feel better" or fall asleep. It's like a reflex and I don't even realise what I'm doing sometimes, or give it much thought, until I've had a couple. I don't want to do it but at the same time I think "well it's not like I'm doing anything wrong". My mum used to be an alcoholic and she was delievered years ago of the demons of alcohol. Before I was even born her and my dad got saved and broke the curses and demon bondages through inheritence so me and my siblings wouldn't inherit them. Is it possible for us to have inherited the demons of alcohol another way or something? Because my sister drinks every single day and I'm worried for her too, even though she is not underage. My posts are always so long. :(

Parents being delivered will break the chain of bondages through inheritance, but it doesn’t magically “fix” the kids or grandkids. You still have your own choices to make. When you sin, it’s your choice. Just because parents get delivered, doesn’t give the kids freedom to go do whatever they want and not expect “things” to happen. The children shouldn’t have to go through the deliverance the parents did, but the kids do have a responsibility to keep the deliverance going by continually repenting for the sins they commit.

As far as the drinking… I don’t drink any more at all, but I don’t judge others if they have a few now and then. My belief is… if you drink enough so it starts to effect your judgment, that is a sin. You are causing yourself to do and think things other than God created you for. Anytime you step out of the will of God for you, it is a sin.

My pastor said a while ago that God wanted her to quit drinking coffee. She did. If she has one cup of coffee, she is sinning just as much as if she got drunk. It all boils down to, “What is God’s will for you”? The next time you want to have a drink, ask God, “Can I have one”? And see what He says.

Blessings

Agreed Dean, we are not to violate our conscience before God.

That has really opened my eyes! Thanks so much Dean. :):):)From now on I will try to remember to ask God beforehand what His will is, but hopefully I won't need to because I won't want to drink anymore!:)

I had ONE beer at bowling last night just becuase a buddy bought it for me. But I said that's it because I do't drink anymore. I don't concider 1 drink drinking. As soon as I feel it AT ALL though, even if I have to try hard. Then that's drinking. But sipping one beer for 30 minutes is not really drinking. God has aproved that assumption for me, so don't be setting a limit for yourself, then keep upping it because you think you can have more and you won't really be drunk. I've done a lot of partying, drinking, and experimented with drugs. Let me tell you, God will do so much more for you that those things will.

When you're drinking and doing these things, your worldly mind is set onnd you act upon desires of the flesh. So even if you become what you think you want to. You become popular. People think youre cool. You get the girl. You lose weight because of your habbits. Whatever... Once you have all of these things, you'll only want more, and guess what. Your GF does these thingtoo, because that's the setting in which you met her. So your relationship is not built on a foundation of REAL love. Listen to God and he'll make sure your friends really care about you and your partner really loves you. He will efficiently comfort you too, not like the life you get into when you drink.

I noticed too yesterday, that a lack of sleep can be bad for your spirit man just as alchohol or too much coffee. Today I am sooo tired. I can't help but be a little cranky, n o matter how much I try to be kind and patient, I'm just cranky and easily irritated. So I think committing to always having an alert, unhindered mind is important in your spiritual life, so that God can communicate with you and you can listen as intended. Without being awake and of sound mind, his guidance is a lot harder to sense. And the direction you take will reflect that.

I don't think drinking is a sin if done in moderation, but one must also think about causing another to stumble...If someone sees me drinking and knows I am a Christian, and they say, "Well, it's ok for him, so why not?" I am pretty sure that God doesn't care for this.
I personally don't drink because I have a friend who is an alcoholic (please pray for Bob if you think of it) and I have seen firsthand what it physically does to you and what it does to your family emotionally.
Just my 2 cents!

I don't think drinking is bad; drinking to excess is bad since it lowers your inhibitions and probably does damage to your body. Wine gladdens the heart, but drunkeness is definitely not supported in the Bible. :)
As for me, I don't drink, and I've never been drunk in my life...just call me "Designated Driver" , lol.

I personally don't drink, simply because i know that if i do, and i get the taste for it, i'll fall into the trap of getting drunk every other day. However, a friend of mine who is an on-fire christian will drink a beer or two. I guess it just depends on who you are, as long as you know your limits (as Mark said above) and stick to those limits you'll be fine.

It says in the Bible (Gal. 5:21 (NLT))
"... envy, drunkenness, wild parties, and other sins like these. Let me tell you again, as I have before, that anyone living that sort of life will not inherit the Kingdom of God."

And i know that if i get addicted to teh taste of alcohol, i'll be caught up in the loop.
