Bible contradictions.

Bible contradictions.

An online friend sent me these. He's now a newly converted Muslim, because he thinks Jesus is a myth. How can I answer his questions? To have a further understanding on this, please look up this site: http://www.jamaat.net/deedat.htm

How long was Jesus in the tomb?

Depends where you look; Matthew 12:40 gives Jesus prophesying that he will spend "three days and three nights in the
heart of the earth", and Mark 10:34 has "after three days (meta treis emeras) he will rise again". As far as I can see from a
quick look, the prophecies have "after three days", but the post-resurrection narratives have "on the third day".

Re: Bible contradictions

A good study Bible will show you that there are no contradictions in the Bible, only verses that appear to be contradictory. If you use the King James version, get a King James study Bible.

Regarding understanding and refuting Islam, two authors who have written extensively on Islam and other false religions are Josh McDowell and Walter Martin. Check out their works.

By the way, remind your friend that Jesus is not a myth to Muslims. He is recognized as a prophet, but they do not believe he is God.

Thanks for the info. By the way, he thinks Jesus is a prophet now. I'm sorry I gave you the wrong idea at 1st. He just thought the idea of Jesus being the son of God was a myth.

Mustard Seed:

I took HOURS answering each and every one of these for you, then posted them, but the whole post disappeared!   :(

If you want to PM them one at a time to me, I'll be glad to answer them, I just don't have that much time in a block usually to answer them all at once again!

Blessings,

Fr. Onesimus, the forum automatically logs you out after some time of inactivity. When typing a long anwer either type that down on a notepad or check the 'remember me' box when logging in. This has happened to me sometimes and then I dont find time to rewrite them again. :( I also got similar complaints from other users and the above solutions where given by the developers of this software.

Jesus is considered as a prophet by muslims and to convince them about Jesus being the son of God will be difficult.

Hey Mustardseed! :)

I just watched a programme about this exact subject a few days ago from the ongoing "Most Amazing Prophecies." (See Biblestudies > M.a.p)
You can watch and offer your friend to watch this recorded programme for free.

This programme is the second one in the series and is called:

Solving the Messiah Mystery
To watch: Click the following link:
http://www.mostamazingprophecies.com/portals/6/mapmedia/map_2.asx

As the title says it is about JESUS- A prophet or the Messiah?
So as you see it should fit right in to your question.
If you want to skip the introduction with songs etc...just jump to about minute 25.

I will also recommend those programmes to everybody else in here as well as the whole serie. There are still a couple left, and tonight will be the most important presentation of them all, so don't miss that one folks!

Good luck! :)

Thanks Fr. Onesimus, I'm touched by your effort!

And thanks, LA-girl for the links. I can't watch it myself, but maybe my friend can. I'll send it to him. I pray that it'll be helpful to him.

A good mind committed to seeing what Scripture actually says will show you that there are indeed no contradictions in Scripture from God's point of view, but there are contradictions with what even the most committed and faithful people erroneously think.

I Cor. 7: 12a (KJV), "But to the rest speak I, not the Lord"

and, vs. 25a, "Now concerning virgins I have no commandment of the Lord: yet I give my judgement."

These two clearly stated Scriptures are examples of how not all of today's Scriptural Canon is indeed God's very Word. The Torah, the recorded Words of Christ, and The Revelation to Saint John are self described as the Word of God, but all else are advisory words from men.

It takes circular logic, or much fervor, to assert or "show" otherwise.

Beware of the churchy sounding aphorisms of self satisfied "teachers" and "mature believers" who cannot read the clarity of Scripture, but devise complicated "reasons" to make Scripture their own little domains of arrogant "faithfulness." Beware of those who presume to speak of Scriptural "context" which does not exist.

Scripture very clearly describes human imagination as of the Devil. Satan operates to mix his own ideas with the Word of God. Scripture used to "justify" human opinions is not of God.

My question is, if your faith is so strong, why do you even care what your friend thinks? Cant you just agree to disagree?

The Bible does have contradictions in it.

"An eye for an eye"

"Let [no one] cast the first stone"

those are kind of contradictory.

"Thou shalt not murder"

"Thou shalt not suffer a witch to life"

One says dont kill, but the other says go and kill a witch. lol I don't know if thats exactly what it means, but it is kind of hypocritical.

Point is, faith is stronger than any single word or line. So dont let any of it worry you....

My question is, if your faith is so strong, why do you even care what your friend thinks? Cant you just agree to disagree?

The Bible does have contradictions in it.

"We have different gifts, according to the grace given us. If a man's gift is prophesying, let him use it in proportion to his faith.
If it is serving, let him serve; if it is teaching, let him teach;
if it is encouraging, let him encourage; if it is contributing to the needs of others, let him give generously; if it is leadership, let him govern diligently; if it is showing mercy, let him do it cheerfully." Romans 12:6-8

May be Mustardseed has the gift to teach and encourage others. If that is so, then let him do it. I think strong faith in Jesus would only prompt you to tell others of what they are missing.

If you believe that God is always right, how can you ever say that His word contradicts? There are some errors with the translations but the true Word of God perfect. The Word of the Lord is flawless (2 Samuel 22:31), trustworthy (2 Samuel 7:28) and a life saver (Ephesians 6:17).

An eye for an eye is way of saying that every wrong doing must be accompanied by a compensation or punishment to the guilty. Now, we have the legal bodies to do this work and therefore it is up to them to give judgements and not us.

yes, God does give us all talents. Does that go for talents. Does descension and rabble rousing fall into the category of talents? cuz God has seemed to have given me a knack for that, hehe.

Yes, encourage him with what keeps him strong is good advice.

I dont know why it has contradictions.

"Do not suffer a witch to live."
(I suppose that means kill witches, or it could, or I'm sure at one period of history people thought it did)

"Thou shalt not kill"
(self explanatory)

I suppose theres a good reason why theres contradictions too. I mean, God's perfect. God can say one thing and then another with a perfect purpose in the end, right?

This sunday, a guest pastor at our church told us that the reason for us not understanding certain things from the Bible is because we have not given ourselves enough time to learn and grasp them. Our confusions and seemingly contradicting verses are a result of our lack of understanding of the Bible. It applies to me very much. Reading the Bible while asking God to unfold its meaning should help us better understand the Word of God. "A patient man has great understanding, but a quick-tempered man displays folly" (Proverbs 14:29). Sometimes we cannot wait and draw our own conclusions.

I cannot explain your doubt completely but my understanding is that, it is not the witch to be killed but the spirit inside her. When Jesus talked about His sufferings that is to come, Peter began to rebuke Him. Jesus turned and said to Peter, "Get behind me, Satan! You are a stumbling block to me; you do not have in mind the things of God, but the things of men." (Matthew 16:23)

What we see in the old testament stands as a shadow to the events in the new testament. With the Jesus's death on the cross, punishments to such sins were taken off and we were set free by the grace of God (Romans 8:2). Punishment by death was broken through God's perfect plan. This has been done by meeting the righteous requirements of the Law (Romans 8:4) and therefore there is still no contridictions or imperfection.

:)

So, its the witch's soul we are ordered by God to kill?

I don't know, but something about killing someone's soul just doesn't sit right with me. I'm sure there is perfect purpose behind it, so it can't be completely bad. If that means I'm a quick tempered person, so be it. I'd rather be an idiot who doesn't care to destroy people's souls/spirits than a smart, undestanding person who just lives for destroying witch's souls....

Thats why I say the Bible has contradictions in it. God is God. He can lie, cheat, steal, and do whatever because He is pefect, He is God, and no one is going to tell Him what to do otherwise, b/c He is perfect, and if there is perfection behind lies, hypocrisy and contradiction, who are we to say it is even contradiction when it can only serve a good, perfect purpose? ( I dont know why God would tell us the earth is only 6000 years old. But I'm sure He had a good reason to do so, even now we know that the earth is NOT 6000 years old))

If the Bible told you to go and jump off a bridge, I'm sure plenty of people would do it, and I'm sure those people would be the ones bursting to the seams with faith....

But thats why I think the Bible is perfect. It can lie and be contradictory, IF there is a perfect purpose behind it.

Wouldn't you lie to a million people if it could save their lives? of course you would You wouldn't want to be held responsible for killing those people, of course. I wouldn't either. I hope this can clear some things up.
