Titles

In Mathew 23:8-12 Jesus says we are not to be called Rabbi....and we are not to call anyone on earth father....nor to call anyone teacher.

I have heard someone say addressing people with titles (ex Mr. Cline or excuse me sir or Dr. Mathews how are you today or Greetings Pope John) goes against what Jesus commanded.

What are your thoughts on this?

Greetings:
The word Bishop is used in 1PT. 2:25.,concerning your soul.So if you have a big problem with your body&spirit, maybe you should get in touch with someone with a big title.

You must read the whole chapter and understand in context that it's the love of the fame from the title that Jesus is saying stay away from. Let God exalt you instead.

Matthew 23:5 (KJV)
But all their works they do for to be seen of men: they make broad their phylacteries, and enlarge the borders of their garments,

Matthew 23:11-12 (KJV)
But he that is greatest among you shall be your servant. And whosoever shall exalt himself shall be abased; and he that shall humble himself shall be exalted.

This is one of those verses that misquoted, just like "money is the root of all evil" when the word of God actually says it's the "LOVE of money that is the root of all evil" and miss the point of the whole verse:

1 Timothy 6:10 (KJV)
For the love of money is the root of all evil: which while some coveted after, they have erred from the faith, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows.

I'm not trying to get hung up on scripture and I totally understand what you are saying Abdicate but what Jesus says in Matthew 23 verse 9 am I not to take that literally? If not what is Jesus saying there?

Maybe look it this way... it's an attitude of the heart and has to do with idiolizing a man (any person) above God. For we are all apart of the body of Christ now, with Christ as the head.

No distinction between male or female, jew or greek, slave or free. The Holy Spirit is our teacher, through godly men and women, which bears witness with the spirit within us. (1 John 2:27) ... So as long as your not calling someone else God's name, giving them credit for what God is doing through someone... you'll be ok to call someone father or teacher.

But as for you, the anointing (the sacred appointment, the unction) which you received from Him abides [permanently] in you; [so] then you have no need that anyone should instruct you. But just as His anointing teaches you concerning everything and is true and is no falsehood, so you must abide in (live in, never depart from) Him [being rooted in Him, knit to Him], just as [His anointing] has taught you [to do].

Here is what Jesus said about the power that flowed through Him.....

John 14:10 (KJV)
10 Believest thou not that I am in the Father, and the Father in me? the words that I speak unto you I speak not of myself: but the Father that dwelleth in me, he doeth the works.

He gave all credit to The Father.. all glory to The Father.

The Father has given us dominion and authority to do His works, we should never take credit for what He does through us.

Blessings to you! Praying this helps :)
