Seven Spirits of God

Rev 1:4 "...and from l the seven spirits who are before his throne"

I've never heard anyone speak on the Seven Spirits of God before the throne. What a wonderful gem to search out.

So I searched and search and found Them!

Isaiah 11:2 (KJV)
And the spirit of the LORD shall rest upon him, the spirit of wisdom and understanding, the spirit of counsel and might, the spirit of knowledge and of the fear of the LORD;
  1. Spirit of the Lord - also known as the Holy Spirit
  2. Spirit of Wisdom
  3. Spirit of Understanding
  4. Spirit of Counsel
  5. Spirit of Might
  6. Spirit of Knowledge
  7. Spirit of the Fear of the Lord
And These are Those sent throughout the earth and They are the Lamb!

Revelation 5:6 (KJV)
And I beheld, and, lo, in the midst of the throne and of the four beasts, and in the midst of the elders, stood a Lamb as it had been slain, having seven horns and seven eyes, which are the seven Spirits of God sent forth into all the earth.

They are also the seven lamps:

Revelation 4:5 (KJV)
And out of the throne proceeded lightnings and thunderings and voices: and [there were] seven lamps of fire burning before the throne, which are the seven Spirits of God.

Since we know the Seven Spirits are the the Lamb of God as well as the Seven Lamps - the Menorah! The Light of the World!

Just thought I'd share this.

Grace be unto you, and peace,

Hi @Abdicate,

Interesting as this is, I don't believe that Isaiah 11:2 can be referred to in reference to the seven Spirits of Revelation 1:4. Firstly it is One Spirit that is the subject of Isaiah 11:2, 'The Spirit of the Lord', and it will 'rest upon Him', being characterised five different ways: while the seven Spirits of Rev. 1:4 do not, 'rest upon Him', but are, 'before His throne', and are seven separate Spirits.

Being spoken of as being,
'before', or, 'in the presence of', God's Throne, shows that they occupy the position of servants (1 Kings 10:8, and are created beings (Rev. 4:5,10; 8:2; 11:4;16; 12:10; 14:3,5,10; 20:12).

This one fact precludes the idea that these seven could be one, and that one Divine! There is nothing in the whole Bible which represents the Holy Spirit in such a subordinate position. He is equal with the Father and with the Son.

Angels however are constantly represented as occupying this position. Angels are called 'spirits'. See Heb. 1:7:14, Psa. 104:4.

Seven is the number that represents "completeness & that which is representative".

The Sabbath and circumcision and actually worship are all hinged around the 7th day.

Jericho was walked around 7 times.

Naaman went down into the Jordan river 7 times.

There was 7 years of plenty and 7 years of famine.

Nebuchadnezzar was insane for 7 years.

There are 7 beatitudes in the New Test.

There are 7 petitions in the Lords prayer.

There are 7 parables in Matt. 13.

There was 7 loaves of bread.

Jesus spoke 7 times from the cross.

It seems to me that the number SEVEN is the key to the book of the Revelation of Jesus Christ. We consider all of that, it is my opinion that the "Seven Spirits" refer to the Trinity.

Notice that in the verse that @Abdicate posted, Rev. 1:4........."Which is and which was and which is to come" emphasizes the eternity and immutability of God. Do you see how the mention of each member of the Trinity is presented?
1.) Jesus Christ in verse #5 of course refers to God the Son.
2.) The Seven Spirits refers to God the Holy Spirit.
3.) "Him which is and which was and which is to come refers to God the Father.

Now something else interesting is seen in these 2 verses, Rev. 1:4&5. In these 2 verses are seen SEVEN titles that are given to the Lord Jesus Christ.

1.) "Faithful witness".
2.) "First begotten of the dead".
3.) "The Prince of the kings of the earth".
4.) "Unto Him that loved us".
5.) "Washed (loosed) us from our sins in His own blood".
6.) "And has made us kings and priests unto God His Father".
7.) "To Him the glory and dominion unto the ages of the ages".

Fine, so Who are the Seven Spirits then? It's fine you don't agree, but your don't support a solution either.

Hi @Abdicate,

Interesting thoughts. I see the `Seven Spirits of God` before the throne as - the seven fold Spirit of God, the Holy Spirit. As we know the Father, Son & Holy Spirit are the Godhead & all equal, however in function we see -

Divine Procession.

Godhead - At the source there is the provision by the whole Godhead,

Father - with the initial movement of the Father;

Son - the administration of the Son;

Holy Spirit - and the direct agency of the Holy Spirit.

And this is what I believe we see in the Rev. 4 picture of the throne room. The seven-fold Spirit shows the operation of the Spirit in those seven areas as you well said.
  1. Spirit of the Lord
  2. Spirit of Wisdom
  3. Spirit of Understanding
  4. Spirit of Counsel
  5. Spirit of Might
  6. Spirit of Knowledge
  7. Spirit of the Fear of the Lord

I agree.

I spoke on this several years back.

The seven Spirits of God are listed in the NT; Spirit of Truth I believe is one of them. Forgive me, without those writings in front of me I can't recall them all. They are the capital S Spirit, all the other times spirit is lower case. Chase the Capital S; they are in plain site. God showed me these things; praise be unto God. Amen

God does not have '7' spirits. But One who is the holy Spirit the Spirit of truth.
How then do you reconcile the scriptures that seem to contradict each other?
The 7 branched oil lamp was made or beaten out of one single piece of gold and all 7 branches had but one source of oil .
7 is the number of perfection and as such each of the 7 manifest 7 different characteristics of the person of the holy Spirit .who is God.
Even as when the Holy Spirit came on the day of Pentecost while a cloven flame fell on each of them there was not more than one Spirit but it was the one Spirit that baptised them .
We are baptised into the One Spirit .
which is a once only event when we are converted .
But we needs must also be filled with the Spirit to live the life that we now have in Christ .

Revelations 4:5
And out of the throne proceeded lightnings and thunderings and voices: and there were seven lamps of fire burning before the throne, which ARE the SEVEN SPIRITS OF GOD.

I believe the Word geralduk. It is clearly written.

There are at least three possible interpretations of the seven spirits of God.

1). The seven spirits of God are symbolic of the Holy Spirit. The Bible, and especially the book of Revelation, uses the number 7 to refer to perfection and completion. If that is the meaning of the “seven” in the "seven spirits," then it is not referring to seven different spirits of God, but rather the perfect and complete Holy Spirit.

2). The seven spirits of God refer to seven angelic beings, possibly the seraphim or the cherubim. This would fit with the numerous others angelic beings that are described in the book of Revelation.

3). Isaiah 11:2 says.......
“The Spirit of the LORD will rest on him — the Spirit of wisdom and of understanding, the Spirit of counsel and of power, the Spirit of knowledge and of the fear of the LORD.”

This could possibly explain the seven spirits of God:
(1) Spirit of the LORD,
(2) Spirit of wisdom,
(3) Spirit of understanding,
(4) Spirit of counsel,
(5) Spirit of power,
(6) Spirit of knowledge,
(7) Spirit of the fear of the Lord.

The bottom line is that the Bible doesn’t tell us specifically who/what the seven spirits are, but the first interpretation, that they are the Holy Spirit, seems the most likely to me and it is the one which I advance and believe.

One swallow does not make a summer , so also neither does one verse of scripture alone prove a doctrine or truth .
There are so many other scriptures that say there is but ONE Spirit of God a simple word search on the subject will prove it.
Thus to take one verse of scripture that speaks of the seven spirits of God and presume that God has 7 different spirits from it would be a mistake.
The 7 branched oil lamp in the tabernacle represents the Holy Spirit even as the shew bread speaks of the Word of God,.
A careful readign then of its construction as well as its final presentation speaks of ONE lamp with 7 branches..
A careful reading of the gifts of the Spirit will also point to the same truth that albeit there are a number of gifts it is all the same Spirit .
In truth the verse you quoted speaks of the lamp in heaven of which the lamp on earth was "after the pattern of heaven"(hebrews)

I too believe the Word and do not deny any of it . Yet we are called to compare spiritual with spiritual.
as we are also to not take a verse of scripture in isolation nor indeed use one verse to build a mountain upon it .
Or read ALL of scripture in the light of it.
But rather to view A verse in the context of all scripture.

As it is written there is only "one" faith, one "baptism", but there are more than one baptism as we have "water baptism", "baptism in the Holy Spirit", and being "baptized by one Spirit into one body". These three baptisms are actually simply multiple instances of the one baptism. Same thing with faith as each and every promise given to us in the word of God brings with it, it's own separate, grace, and faith that cause it to come to pass. Multiple instances of the one faith. Same is true of the "resurrection" of the saints as there is only one resurrection, but God sees this one resurrection in three separate phases. Jesus being the first fruits, the rapture, and then the resurrection of the tribulation saints at the end of the tribulation period.

The seven Spirits of God could be the multiple instances of how the one and only Holy Spirit works, or it could simply be angels that stand in the presence of God before his throne as reference made here.

Rev 8:2.. I saw the seven angels who stand before God, and they were given seven trumpets.

Angels are also called "spirits" which are messengers of God. I myself would be more inclined to think these seven spirits as angels, because the Spirit of God is God, and he does not stand before a throne as he sits upon a throne.

The Spirit of truth rather than the 'spirit of counsel' (where did that come from?
Otherwise your right .But they are not symbolic but different manifestations of the One Spirit of God .
They cannot be angels or anything else than the Spirit of God for angels are not God. Though there is a creeping idea in the church of the worship of angels which the scriptures warn about.
and which they themselves never accepted. Be they ever so high .
in truth was it not Lucifer who desired all should worship him? and was cast down for his presumption.

He maketh His angels spirits and His ministers a flaming fire.
You may entertain angels unawares.

Angels manifested on earth in the physical. We are made spirits in Him, by Him, for Him.

So you are not aware of the "Spirit of counsel" my dear brother.

It is located in Isaiah 11:2...........
"And the Spirit of the LORD shall rest upon him, the Spirit of wisdom and understanding, the Spirit of counsel and might, the Spirit of knowledge and the fear of the LORD."

The Hebrew word for counsel is "esa" and it means steerage or not letting us veer off course.

So then the Spirit of Counsel is like our personal advisor, our helper, our guide. He tells us what we should and shouldn't do. Remember Philippians 2:13, where God promises us that He is in us "...to will of His good pleasure." This means God is in us to let us know what His will is for our own particular situation.

I will never deny scripture what it says .
Though I am compelled to deny nor accept what people thjink it says .
We are talking about the Spirit of God.
Not spiritual beings.
Albeit I have the Spirit of God IN me and who hath quickened me by His Spirit and "theyw ho are joined to the lord are one Spirit.
Yet I am not God nor will be .
An angel is a spiritual beign created by God ,They too are not God and as I pointed out Lucifer who was an angel of light with a high position coverign the throne of God .Still was not God and was cast down for thinkign to ascend the throne .
The subject was the 7 Spirits of God . Not of angels or of men .
I also pointed out the clear example of the 7 branched oil lamp both in the tabernacle made with hands as also in heaven,.
Yiou simply ignore all points and continue with your error without any consideration of them or answer or objection.
I must then conclude by that you simply wish to propagate your error .
I will have no part in it .

Great . Thanks I was not aware of it .
The 7 Spirits rather than 7 spirits speaks of one then with 7 perfect manifestations . which 7 as it were is a moot point but which is for more private discussion . rather than the market place.

Anytime my brother.

Just as a thought. The seven spirits of God can not possibly be God as they would be things that come from God. Seven spirits of God, or from God. The Holy Spirit does give "gifts" also known as the "manifestation" of the Spirit of God. The Holy Spirit does not stand before his throne, he sits upon it.

The Word tells us ALL things are of God; but all good things come from God.

I believe the Word and these scriptures support Col 1:16,17
