The Story of Abraham and the Gospel

I understand that most of you probably already know about this connection, but I wanted to make a thread about it, so we can discuss it.

Genesis 22:1-13
22 "And it came to pass after these things, that God did tempt Abraham, and said unto him, Abraham: and he said, Behold, here I am."

2" And he said, Take now thy son, thine only son Isaac, whom thou lovest, and get thee into the land of Moriah; and offer him there for a burnt offering upon one of the mountains which I will tell thee of."
This relates to Jesus. Jesus was God's only begotten Son and God loved Jesus dearly.

3 "And Abraham rose up early in the morning, and saddled his ass, and took two of his young men with him, and Isaac his son, and clave the wood for the burnt offering, and rose up, and went unto the place of which God had told him."
Even though I am not entirely sure about this, the two servants might be able to represent the two thieves that were crucified with Jesus.

4" Then on the third day Abraham lifted up his eyes, and saw the place afar off."
Jesus rose from the dead on the third day.

5 "And Abraham said unto his young men, Abide ye here with the ass; and I and the lad will go yonder and worship, and come again to you."

6 "And Abraham took the wood of the burnt offering, and laid it upon Isaac his son; and he took the fire in his hand, and a knife; and they went both of them together."
Here, Issac had to hold the wood. Jesus had to carry the wooden cross when He was going to go and get crucified.

7 "And Isaac spake unto Abraham his father, and said, My father: and he said, Here am I, my son. And he said, Behold the fire and the wood: but where is the lamb for a burnt offering?"

8 And Abraham said, My son, God will provide himself a lamb for a burnt offering: so they went both of them together.

9 "And they came to the place which God had told him of; and Abraham built an altar there, and laid the wood in order, and bound Isaac his son, and laid him on the altar upon the wood."

10 "And Abraham stretched forth his hand, and took the knife to slay his son."

11 "And the angel of the Lord called unto him out of heaven, and said, Abraham, Abraham: and he said, Here am I."

12 "And he said, Lay not thine hand upon the lad, neither do thou any thing unto him: for now I know that thou fearest God, seeing thou hast not withheld thy son, thine only son from me."
God did not withhold Jesus and stop Him from dying on the cross. He loved us so much that He was willing to sacrifice His only begotten Son for us, just like Abraham was willing to sacrifice his only son for God, both out of genuine love.

13 And Abraham lifted up his eyes, and looked, and behold behind him a ram caught in a thicket by his horns: and Abraham went and took the ram, and offered him up for a burnt offering in the stead of his son."

As you can see, the story of Abraham and Issac can directly relate to the Gospel in many ways. I think God opened my eyes to some of these things, because I did not notice them before. Praise the Lord!

Great story! Great parallel to the Gospel message.. I would like to take an excerpt from Ravi Zacharias.. It was striking to me.. Something we all need to realize..

Three years ago, I was with the Archbishop of Canterbury. He’d taken five of us to the Middle East to talk to the leaders of all factions to bring together some kind of semblance of peace, some discussion. There were many of those appointments I chose not to go to because of our nation’s caution on whom to see and not to see.

But the last day, I saw one of the leaders of Hamas, one of the four founders. I went there for one reason; I had one question for him. He gave us a great meal, told us of eighteen years he’d served in prison, some of his children had been lost in suicide bombings, and this and that. And I had a question. I said, “Sheik, I may never see you again and forgive me if I’m asking you the wrong question. Please tell me, what do you think of suicide bombing and sending your children out like that?” I didn’t like his answer. I couldn’t say much. The room was full of smoke.

After he finished his answer, I said, “Sheik, you and I may never see each other again, so I want you to hear me. A little distance from here is a mountain upon which Abraham went 5,000 years ago to offer his son. You may say the son was one; I may say it’s another. Let’s not argue about that. He took his son up there. And as the axe was about to fall, God said, ‘Stop.’” I said, “Do you know what God said after that?” He shook his head. I said, “God said, ‘I myself will provide.’” He nodded his head. I said, “Very close to where you and I are sitting, Sheik, is a hill. Two thousand years ago, God kept that promise and brought his own Son and the axe did not stop this time. He sacrificed his own Son.”

I said, “Sheik, I just want you to hear this. Until you and I receive the Son God has provided, we’ll be offering our own sons and daughters on the battlefields of this world for many of the wrong reasons.”

It was quiet. We walked out and the Archbishop just put his arm around me. As I was about to get into the SUV, the Sheik came over and he just patted me on my face. He kissed me on both sides. He was a strong man; he pulled me to him. He said, “You’re a good man. I hope I will see you again someday.” That’s all he said.

One more thing that amazes me in this story.. We would think Abraham would have been surprised at what Lord asked him.. Sacrifice his only son? But we must remember the context.. The place and culture.. Abraham is living in Canaan.. In that culture, child sacrifice is not something knew.. The people there offered their children as sacrifice to their gods (small g).. This is not new to Abraham.. He might have very well thought, our Lord is also just demanding the same.. So it might have looked like nothing new to him.. But what amazes me is, what Abraham tells his servant before leaving.. He clearly says, me and my son will come back.. Though it was the norm in the local culture, Abraham knew God.. Abraham knew Jehovah would never demand something like that from him.. He does not know how.. But he knows he is going to return back with Isaac. Even if the axe fell, Abraham knew Lord would send him back with Isaac.. The faith of Abraham is stunning here.. Abraham not hesitating to swing the axe is the culmination of his faith.. It is so very evident when he says, he would return with his son..

Paul the Apostle writes much about Abraham in his epistles to the churches [Galatians in particular; the Law versus faith].
But in Epistle to the Hebrews chapter 11 Paul explains more about Abraham's story to us -
17By faith Abraham, when he was tried, offered up Isaac: and he that had received the promises offered up his only begotten son, 18Of whom it was said, That in Isaac shall thy seed be called: 19Accounting that God was able to raise him up, even from the dead; from whence also he received him in a figure.
The Old Testament is the New concealed, and the New Testament is the Old revealed.

I ask would any of us have Faith Like this ? How much FAITH in God are we willing to show or offer God? People use the word Faith for everything from what denomination or religion you are to yea I have faith in God but I doubt he could help me in this......

What does your FAITH say about YOU ?
Jim

I ask would any of us have Faith Like this ? What does your FAITH say about YOU ? Jim

Jesus asked the most incredible challenging question to us all - When the Son of Man shall returns shall I find faith upon the earth?
Lots of people talk about their faith. I love Jesus. I am saved by my faith in him. My faith is mighty and I can do all things through him....
If the christian world is so full of faith warriors - then why did Jesus ask a rhetorical question? He already knows the answer to his question.
And if christians are claiming such great faith on their behalf, then why are they all in such a hurry to get beamed up out of harm's way when the great tribulation comes upon the whole earth? That's not faith. That's not overcoming. There is no challenge to living by faith and finishing the race in the rapture fantasy .
It is a get out of jail free card. In the world you will have tribulation, but be of good cheer I have overcome the world.
Being a christian is about overcoming. Surviving all calamities by the power of faith. Today right now christians are being killed for the gospel; being killed for distributing Bibles; being burnt alive and/or stoned to death in Pakistan, under their dreadful blasphemy laws. Where is their rapture??
Why should thousands of christians be martyred in upholding their faith, and Western christians, who have let the team down, be safely whisked away?
The delusion of rapture before the great tribulation is the stuff of cowards.
The scriptures over and over again speak to our suffering and being despised, of being hated for upholding the gospel. In fact to preach the gospel until the end of the world - nothing about a holiday.
Remember the parable of the 10 virgins. Five were ready and went into the marriage feast, five were not ready and the door was shut. Their vessels were empty. Empty of faith and commitment. Empty of the power of the Holy Spirit to sustain and overcome all things. Empty of witnessing and evangelizing.

If thou faint in the day of adversity, thy strength is small. Proverbs 24:10
Rev 2:10 Fear none of those things which thou shalt suffer: behold, the devil shall cast some of you into prison, that ye may be tried; and ye shall have tribulation ten days: be thou faithful unto death, and I will give thee a crown of life.
Rev 3:2 Be watchful, and strengthen the things which remain, that are ready to die: for I have not found thy works perfect before God.
Rev 3:3 Remember therefore how thou hast received and heard, and hold fast, and repent. If therefore thou shalt not watch, I will come on thee as a thief, and thou shalt not know what hour I will come upon thee.
Rev 3:5 He that overcometh, the same shall be clothed in white raiment; and I will not blot out his name out of the book of life, but I will confess his name before my Father, and before his angels.
Rev 17:6 And I saw the woman drunken with the blood of the saints, and with the blood of the martyrs of Jesus: and when I saw her, I wondered with great admiration.
Rev 6:10 And they cried with a loud voice, saying, How long, O Lord, holy and true, dost thou not judge and avenge our blood on them that dwell on the earth?
Rev 6:11 And white robes were given unto every one of them; and it was said unto them, that they should rest yet for a little season, until their fellowservants also and their brethren, that should be killed as they were, should be fulfilled.

Faith is proven and developed and tried under fire; not in escape. When the world is on fire, when Armageddon is happening , will you and I have faith?
The early first century christians were fed to the lions. Daniel and his fellows were thrown into a fiery furnace. Daniel survived the lion's den.
Isaiah was sawn in half. Read Hebrews chapter 11. Why should it be any different for christians of our generation. The rapture is a cop out.

I will share a revelation with you - only our real faith will save us from the plague that will come and from nuclear fallout, and the pandemonium of a lawless fallen world. If you cannot pray in these times for your salvation and protection you will die with the rest of the world.
Now do you have faith? Have you the love of our Lord and Saviour to death?

@Waggles Greetings Brother,
Oh YES I do have Faith and I will have Faith. Where I am at now in my walk, I can not even think how any one could try to live in this day and age without Building up their Faith.
Faith is our Connection to God.....

Look at this way......Picture Faith as a tube, everything is running smooth and clear through this tube, but you start collecting unforgiven sins and holding grudges and little doubt here and there, well that tube begins to get smaller and smaller thus limiting your faith or what your Faith can produce for you.

I said all this because far too many Christians are so busy living in this world that they have forgotten what the written word tells us. They miss words such as "and" "therefore" "even as" etc. Those are important words. Chrisitans dont take the command to love as a command but rather just something nice we can do to those who we fill deserve it. Faith wont work with out love. Forgivness is not an Option as many feel. We are NOT told to forgive when we fill the other person has shown us enough repentance or done good by us. Forgive any aught we have against some one....

I know I am getting off track with the post and I ask you to forgive me, but Waggles you sparked in me something I am very passionant about and wish more people were as well. That is the Written word of God and what is says to do and say and be.

Now I know where your heart stands Brother Waggles and it is Awesome.....however look around in here and see all the misquided notions of scripture and all the believing on religous hand me downs that are totally oposed to the written word of God... We need to be waking up and smelling the BLOOD THAT WAS SHED FOR US...WAS IT ALL IN VAIN?

Not here in my house....People pray thy kingdom come and they will be done here on earth as it is in heaven....as if it is a prayer for the world...I tell you it should be more like
Lord Your kingdom be established in ME and Lord God your kingdom be established in MY HOME and in MY FAMILY and in my life and my doings....the same for His will be done....Lord GOD your will be done in ME, your will be done in MY HOUSE etc.

It is time to be totally surrendered unto God and His will and Plan for us and not what ever we want or feel like we should do. We NEED to build up our lives so we can be READY AND ABLE, TO DO HIS WILL.... Every one is called.....Every one has a plan for their life by God. The problem is....many are too busy to find His plan, many simply say NO and many just dont have a clue that any of this is real.

God is calling........Who will He use ? Why those who show up.... Picture this if you will.
God has a plan for your life. Imangine if He has a photo cut out of who He created you to be and what He called you to do standing there when we stand before Him.....How will YOU meassure up to His cut out ? See where I am going with this ?

The time for a wimpy and lazy Christian walk is over...Especially in this day and age.
It's really up to us......Will we hear His call ? Will we answer His Call ? Will we be prepared and built up in His word and ways when He does call?
Sorry for going on but this is burning in me like I have been set ablaze with this.
Peace and Love and Joy to you all
Jim

What an awesome display of God's great love for us! The sad thing is that to many people don't have faith as strong as this! And others just say that they do. But what we have to realize is that if we don't begin now to build our faith and trust in our loving Savior, then it will be to weak to endure and as the Word says it will be taken from us (mark 4:24-25). Like the old saying....use it or loose it.

Faith is also a gift from God, strange as that seems. It is also one of the segments of the fruit of the Holy Spirit.
When persecution and tribulation comes upon oneself it is a dynamic relationship of prayer that builds up faith. And faith promotes prayer.
The circle of life!!
Many people are killed for their christian faith even though they pray and call out to Jesus for help.
Outside of the very soft, materialistic West I think you will find that Christians (in the broadest sense) are more aware of the dangers they are in because of their faith in a hostile world. Killing christians in Pakistan is State sanctioned under their blasphemy laws.
People talk on this Forum about their great and deep faith. Some have survived personal tragedy which does in itself challenge faith. But many many christians in the West have not suffered for their faith. Rapture again is just another cop out for a feel good population who define their own self-righteousness and entitlement to be saved from the judgment and wrath that is coming onto this world.

"Faith is a gift from God".
I would agree with that.
Yep God put a measure of faith in all of us and It is up to US to build on this faith and develope this faith. It's not like God gave him more faith then me or well I guess God did not want me to have great faith other wise he would have given it to me....

The Scriptures state that we all get an equal measure of faith and spiritual gifts. But it certainly is up to each and everyone of us to make good use of this.
The Holy Spirit gives every true believer a toolbox. Some use it constantly and make good use of this gift. Some tinker occasionally and only use it to do urgent repairs. Some put their toolbox in the shed where it gathers dust.

I always thought that I would die before i deny Jesus. Thing is, I have never been in a situation where I have had to choose.

The time is coming upon us - more so in places like Europe and Asia, where believers are surrounded and confronted by hostility from others who despise the gospel - yes, the time will come when even in America there will be conflict and attacks. It has already started in Africa, India, Pakistan, Indonesia... it will only get worse when terrible war and destruction that will come upon the Earth - yet they will not repent and curse God. People are already angry over religion as a cause of war, etc.

I understand that Jesus is more important than my life.

Another good reason to have the Holy Spirit -the kingdom of God is within and of peace and power in the Holy Ghost. :)
