David & Goliath

I just watched a discussion “The unheard story of David and Goliath” by Malcom Gladwell.I am still digesting it, but I would like to share some of my first thoughts.

According to the Bible, David should not be thought of an actual underdog. He had equipped himself with a weapon that emphasized David’s abilities, and minimized any apparent advantages of Goliath. Not only is the sling a weapon that can be used when the foe is beyond arm’s reach, but it was one that David had spent some time developing as a method of protecting the flock.

We should go into ‘battle’ on God’s terms, not on the world’s, or on Satan’s. We should equip ourselves with the appropriate weapons (scripture, prayer, and the fellowship and prayers of other believers). It is also much better to become proficient at handling these prior to battle rather than try to master them on the battlefield. We should not wait until we stand before the giant and need to stoop and pick up a stone.

The talk ended with the following observation:

I think, in that, a very important lesson for all of us. Giants are not as strong and powerful as they seem. And sometimes the shepherd boy has a sling in his pocket.

PS, Since this post is probably the closest I will get to commenting on physical weapons, I would like to clear up a possible misunderstanding. My ID on this site is Target_Hunter. I am not looking for people to argue with. I may have controversial views, but I am more interested in sharing diverse views in brotherhood than trying to argue... Few years back, I needed to get some exercise and contrary to my general outlook, I purchased a firearm to get me out and moving . I shoot targets set up against a hill. I used that ID on a gun ownership site to help me solicit advice selecting the firearm. My ID is a statement to that community that I neither hunt, nor carry a gun. I was having problems signing up on this site (my headspace rather than the interface). I do not know how, but the ID that my tablet app (tapatalk) has for my firearm site became my ID here. So be it. I am still ambivalent about deadly weapons.

Just to show David's ability and God's protection of him.......David took 5 more stones with him.

WHY?????

Goliath had 5 brothers and if one or all had stepped forward to claim the law of retribution, David would have slew them also.

I would add that I do hunt, and carry a fire arm.

Modern research has shown that a stone propelled from such a sling clocks an average speed of 90 miles per hour (up to 110 mph) and that a skilled slingsman can hit the center of a target from about 25 yards....WOW! So David KNEW (having slew a mountain lion and a bear) that this man was had before the fight even began....

You don't have to apologize or cower to political correctness or gun-phobic mindsets. In the right hands they can bring down tyrannical dictators bent on evil intents, and protect innocent life. Guns are just another technological advance, much in the same way David's sling was a technological advance in warfare. Both hurl projectiles. Can you imagine the change in the world if David had invented the gun and defeated Goliath with it!?!
Just watch out for Big Moose.:D:ROFLMAO:

I do love the story of David and Goliath. Even has humor.
40 Then he (David) took his staff in his hand........And he drew near to the Philistine. 43 So the Philistine said to David, “Am I a dog, that you come to me with sticks?”

Go fetch boy! Good dog! Ha!

An observation of mine was, young and not great in stature. So how powerful a spirit of persuasion David had, obviously the Holy Spirit, to convince King Saul and the others in the army to allow this young man to be the champion to take on Goliath? I mean, he wasn't big or strong enough to wear Saul's armor. And if he lost, they all became slaves to the Phillistines. Incredible Spirit driven event.

Hi Target Hunter,
It also shows that no matter how big our "giants" are, they got nothing on our God! The "sling" we all have is the power of God! Amen!

PS. I agree with others here, I like your profile name and I trap shoot and hunt. I have NRA stickers on my car and I get some pretty rude comments from fellow students, too.

Bless you and thanks for the study!
