They did not know

As in the days of Noah...

It's interesting - in Matt 24 and Luke 17 -
They did not know...
We see this phrase from Matt 24:39 "and did not know until the flood came and took them all away.... " in both of these accounts...

Did not know WHAT?

Did they not know ABOUT the prophecies of the flood and judgement on all man? Did they not know because it was never revealed? AKA - they were "Unlearned" or "Simple".. and they would not be responsible.. God is mean and unpredictable and likes to smite man?

Enoch and Noah were both prophets proclaiming the evil of man and the coming destruction.. Ref Hebrews, Jude, 1st and 2nd Peter...

OR..
They didn't "Know" it was really coming THEN because they weren't paying attention... That they had heard but just like today - they IGNORE... They are "Ignorant".. not paying attention to the signs, ignoring the warnings... They "Know" about that stuff... but it's just a story - not a reality... or I am righteous - God won't do that to me... They "Don't Know" it's REAL and it's for today...

They didn't know because they were FOOLS - because they had Heard and Ignored and didn't care... They became ignorant... Romans 1:21-22 because, although they knew God, they did not glorify Him as God, nor were thankful, but became Vain/Empty in their thoughts, and their foolish (Simple, Unlearned) hearts were darkened.
Professing to be wise, they became fools, (Fools here in the Proverb Fools sense, Ignorant -
intentionally Ignoring not Unlearned/simple)

This wraps back around to the importance of Acts 17:11... Be willing to hear the Word with all readiness of mind, but checking the scriptures daily to verify it is so.

How is this even more an indictment against ourselves....

We have all the scriptures... WE KNOW... we have the entire bible to learn from.... Are we Simple - without knowledge... or are we Fools.. Unwilling to listen, understand, accept correction, and learn?

Good question.

I believe that the point Jesus was making is that they rejected so completely God's warning through Noah that they went right on getting married and living life as they wanted to right up to the day that Noah went into the Ark. They lived their lives as if God did not exist.

They did not believe that He would judge them and laughed at the idea that a judment of a flood was coming.

How about the coming judgement.... Most Christians believe more or less the same today - that God's judgement is FAR future... There's no real reason to be Obedient because we have Grace....

We forget that while Grace deals with Spiritual consequences - it does not deal the same way with Physical consequences... Hit a curb and bust the sidewall of your tire - you aren't going to Hell - but your tire is still flat...

We seem to ignore that physical judgements are physical and carry along real life physical consequences....

As an aside....

That would be a pretty crummy honeymoon and all.... Head on down to the beach for a romantic weekend with the new wife.... it rains the whole time.... and they won't even give you a rain check...

You know... I was thinking about how high the water would have had to rise to be 18-cubits above the HIGHEST mountain top.... Rough estimate - the water level would have to be about 6 MILES higher than it is now... With a mean diameter of 7,918 miles of the earth - 6 more miles per side deep would add up to 7,930 miles... The volume of water would be 2,260,432,368 cubic miles, or 2,489 TRILLION gallons of water... If this water was in a round lump - it would have been 896 miles in diameter - or from Montgomery, Al to New York City...

In real life - it's incomprehensible.. more or less impossible to actually wrap your head around....

Thanks

I guess that is why faith is so important!

Luke 18:27............
"But he said, “What is impossible with man is possible with God.”

50 And His mercy is on those who fear Him
From generation to generation.
51 He has shown strength with His arm;
He has scattered the proud in the imagination of their hearts. (Luke 1)

This is what came to my mind. ^^^

They believed themselves to be wise in their own vain imaginations; rejecting the truth of God, holding iniquity in their prideful hearts. Believing themselves to be independent and equally powerful as God. Being willfully ignorant of God's creation and scoffing at His Word.

They did not know God by choice.

I don't know about y'all, but I see another prophecy happening just within the last few months:

2 Peter 3:4 (KJV)
And saying, Where is the promise of his coming? for since the fathers fell asleep, all things continue as [they were] from the beginning of the creation.

This is the first generation in over 1000 years that has "Second Coming" fatigue...

All the end-time and end-of-the-world movies, books, TV shows have condition everyone to become numb to anything good and jaded towards anything evil. Another prophecy:

Isaiah 5:20-21 (KJV)
Woe unto them that call evil good, and good evil; that put darkness for light, and light for darkness; that put bitter for sweet, and sweet for bitter! Woe unto [them that are] wise in their own eyes, and prudent in their own sight!

Only those that overcome will be set free.

'My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge.' (Hosea 4:6)

Not knowing the Law (divine or human) is no reason for breaking it.
