Righteousness by Faith ( The case for sola scriptura --the Bible and the Bible Alone)

Our opening text:
Heb 11:6

But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him.

Galatians 3:11
But that no man is justified by the law in the sight of God, it is evident: for, The just shall live by faith.

There is no salvation by the law, the Just shall live by Faith. But how do we get Faith?

So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God. Rom 10:17

Faith comes from hearing, and specifically by hearing the word of God. Therefore, we can conclude that with out the word of God, you cannot have faith, and if you do not have faith, you cannot please God. The whole word of God is the source for all faith. This is the same word that spoke, and it was done; he commanded, and it stood fast. Psalms 33:9 There is preemptive power in the word of God.

matt 4:4 But he answered and said, It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by everyword that proceedeth out of the mouth of God.

2 tim 3:15 And that from a child thou hast known the holy scriptures, which are able to make thee wise unto salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus.

Amen

I don't know if this has any bearing on the Op, but when I read the Word; I like to read it out loud, not to myself in my head. That way my ears hear it.

Do you think there is something in that?

I think it helps for comprehension, but the context of Rom 10:17 is talking about preaching. So there is no benefit, spiritually speaking, that we gain by reading the text out loud verses in reading it in silence.

Show me where it says that the Canonized Scripture is the ONLY way that God communicates with man?

The bible states that we are to test any new revelation against all previously vetted revelation.... It does not state that God will communicate with man ONLY through the previously canonized scripture....

The canon is definitely not the only way, I would have to agree. Nevertheless, scripture has already been validated. Because of that, it is safe as a rule of faith to which all other "revelations" must be tested against.

We see this concept in action when scripture is used as a test for Paul Himself. See Acts 17:11.

For the ignorant - like me - here's the definitions:
  1. Sola scriptura (Latin ablative, "by Scripture alone") is the Protestant Christian doctrine that the Bible contains all knowledge necessary for salvation and holiness.
  2. Sola gratia is one of the Five solae propounded to summarise the Reformers' basic beliefs during the Protestant Reformation; it is a Latin term meaning grace alone.
Personally, the word of God is merely a map. A map to find a person, not a place. That person is Jesus. We are saved only by His actions by grace through faith.

Grace is favor that cannot be earned.
Faith is trust in someone or something.

God can use, and has, the stars to proclaim His glory and power to a willing heart. Whether from the pages of scripture, or pages of creation, or pages of His living books (us), His message is manifested, that He will save those that call on His Name, even if they don't know it, because His word if written on our hearts. It's that simple. Don't limit God to the pages of translators.

Absolutely my brother.

Romans 10:17
"FAITH comes by HEARING and hearing by the Word of God".

Amen!

For the simple minded such as I am, I just believe that God is a lot smarter than me or anyone else, so then I simply believe what He has said.

I can not agree with that. I respect your opinion but there are many people that your thought does not apply to.

As for Romans 10:17.....I would say that we must understand that hearing alone does not bring salvation, BUT FAITH in the message heard does.
The message must come from the Word of God.

As the scripture says, "make it plain" Habakkuk 2:2 ;) or one of my favorite verses, "The entrance of thy words giveth light; it giveth understanding unto the simple. " Psalms 119:130

Unfortunately, it is a seriously misguided view that God speaks to man today in an audible voice. That kind of thinking will end in disaster. When people want to believe something so badly that they will reject the revealed truth of the Scriptures, and seek a “direct response” from God, he will allow them to believe what they will — even lies. Ultimately, though, they will receive an appropriate judgment as the consequence .
(see 2 Thes. 2:11-12).

The writer of the book of Hebrews has summarized Heaven’s methods of communication to humanity.
“God, having of old time spoken unto the fathers in the prophets by divers portions and in divers manners, hath at the end of these days spoken unto us in his Son” (Heb. 1:1).
The foregoing text states several basic truths.
  • God has spoken to man.
  • He did so in times past in varying degrees and by different methods.
  • Eventually, however, a change in his method of operation occurred; today he speaks exclusively by means of his Son and what the Son said is recorded in the Scriptures.

Talk about a “simple man” ….

I have this observation to other “simple man” as well: a simple Buddhist, a simple Moslem or even a simple Christian who don’t into knowing their religion much….

Observation: usual response, there is difficulty in the first two, but on the 3rd, no difficulty..

Sola Fide (Faith alone): , really, if only I have faith, I will be save? And not to strive/work?

Sola Scriptura (Scripture alone): they think the Bible is the Holy Book of Christians… other religions have their own "holy books"

Sola Gratia (Grace alone): of course, only God…. that is: even a "simple man" will understand.

When you say that Scripture has been validated, what is meant by this?
