This is not meant for intense debate. I am just interested in CFS's stats. The poll is for those who go to hell, not Purgatory.

Universalism = Pay for crime accordingly and then go to heaven.

Matt 5:44 But I tell you, love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you.
Psalm 100:5 For the LORD is good and his love endures forever; his faithfulness continues through all generations.

Annihilation = Cease to exist.

Psalm 37:20 But the wicked will perish: Though the LORD's enemies are like the flowers of the field, they will be consumed, they will go up in smoke.

Eternal torture = Suffer in fire for eternity.

Death is never annihilation, it is a state when in sin. Prov 36:8 But those who fail to find me harm themselves; all who hate me love death. Eph 2:1 As for you, you were dead in your transgressions and sins. Rev 20:10 And the devil that deceived them was cast into the lake of fire and brimstone, where the beast and the false prophet are, and shall be tormented day and night for ever and ever.

Eternal Torment / Limited suffering = No burning sensation. The fire is as figurative as the word death.

Rom 2:6 Who will render to every man according to his deeds. We would not punish a thief as we would a murderer. Matt 25:32 and he will separate the people one from another as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats.

I choose # 4.
Shouldn't we all agree with Geneva convention? They correctly ordained that killing and torturing our enemy is wrong. I would choose # 1 if it were not for the verdict of 'mankind loving darkness' in John 3:19.

What's amazing is the Bible is so ambiguous about this. I think there is more evidence supporting Annihilation than the others but there are verses suggesting the other options.

Yes, I can believe that. I have always assumed Matt 8:29 automatically translates into proof of torment coming. But it could just as easily be annihilation.

29 And, behold, they cried out, saying, What have we to do with thee, Jesus, thou Son of God? art thou come hither to torment us before the time?

May be add an option unsure and I will vote for it :)
I might have to choose #4 or #3. Man being created in God's image, carries a lot more meaning.. So it would be hard for me to believe in annihilation. Universalism is a far fetched interpretation for me..

I would choose #3. He says in the bible that when the wicked go to hell they will eternally suffer. Now as far as the End Times when everything is at its end and all Forgiven are in Heaven and all the Wicked are in Hell, satan will be trapped and no one in Hell will be able to get out. I feel like Satan will suffer along with everyone in Hell. I also feel that saying of "If I'm going down you are going down with me" applies to Satan and everyone on Earth. He wants to take whoever he can as it was guaranteed by God that he will eternally suffer. That's just my opinion.

I should have read your definitions 1st....my bad!

I thought you meant #4 was eternal torment based on the knowledge one had while alive as to who Jesus Christ is.

So I guess there needs to be a #5. I understand Scripture to say that the wicked lost who refuse Christ are bound for the Lake of Fire where there will be eternal torment for them. Those who did not have any knowledge of Christ will also go to the lake of fire,,,however their torment will not be as severe as those who knew and rejected Christ.

The prospect that one day a vast number of people will be consigned to the everlasting torment of hell is most disturbing and distressing to sensitive Christians. After all, almost everyone has friends or family members who have died without making a commitment to Christ. That fact over the years has caused well meaning believers to come up with an alternative idea apart from the Scriptures.

Dr. John Walvoord, past president of Dallas Theological Seminary, himself a fundamentalist, suggests that the reluctance to preach on hellfire is due primarily to the fear of proclaiming an unpopular doctrine because so many people have had lost loved one die and just can not bear the Bible fact of eternal torments.

Jesus declares in Matthew 25:41.......
" that the destiny of the unsaved is “the eternal fire prepared for the devil.”

Matthew 25:46 .......
uses the same adjective, eternal, to describe the fates of the lost and saved: “eternal punishment” and “eternal life.”

In Mark 9:47-48......
Jesus depicts “hell” as a place “where their worm does not die, and the fire is not quenched” (Mark 9:47–48).

2 Thess. 1:9..........
Paul’s reference to “eternal destruction” indicates a figurative devastation that the damned will experience forever in hell, separated from the Lord’s royal presence.

Revelation 14:10.......
where we read that the impenitent “will be tormented with burning sulfur,” depicts the hellfire imagery as agony, not annihilation.

Rev. 14:11...........
John speaks of everlasting torment when he adds, “and the smoke of their torment rises for ever and ever”.

Rev. 20:10.......
John’s description of Satan’s fate as being placed in “the lake of fire and sulfur” and being “tormented day and night for ever and ever” signifies everlasting pain, a fate that lost human beings share.

Point 4 does mean suffering based on knowledge. Eternal torment and limited suffering applicable to our deeds. When we judged according to our deeds by a just judge, we can safely assume those who know better are accountable for more.

Agreed. But also the fact that God instructs us to and our renewed heart convicts us to, love our enemy. I have to see hell as a place that God just keeps His enemy that hates Him. If I think of it as a place where His / our enemies are tortured...I just can't swallow that pill.

That is simply your opinion. There are some intense arguments for Annihilation.

The truth is NO. There is not one single Bible verse that supports Annihilation. You are welcome to post what you wish and we can discus them but you will not find any that support such a thought.

I understand your thinking and you know very well I respect you, but what you are thinking simply is not Scripture.

Luke 16 is the definitive explanation of hell and then John expands that in Revelation 20.

KingJ, a word of caution.......the passage you cited, Matt 8:29. is telling us what demons, lying spirits, enemies of God and His truth cried out.
Do you think it wise to frame any sort of belief on the lies of demons?

This has been hashed out many times. Both sides interpret scripture differently so there isn't much use in beating a dead horse again as you are right in your mind and will not listen to the truth.

I voted for option #4. Matt. 11:20-24 seems to indicate varying degrees of punishment ("...it will be more bearable on the day of judgment for Tyre and Sidon than for you"). The rich man in Luke 16:24 did mention being in anguish in flame, but perhaps this was only his specific judgment. I don't know if we can conclude that everyone's experience in hell will be exactly the same.

Universalism as you described it doesn't make much sense to me. If we could pay for our sins, why did Christ have to die?

That is a pretty sarcastic way of trying to communicate, don't you think.????

The truth is God's Word my brother, not what I or you think or perceive or even want.

I invited you to post any Scripture you would like to prove the TRUTH that you perceive about Annialihition and you post NONE.
Then your only comment is ..........
"you are right in your mind and will not listen to the truth".

Allow me to give you something else to think about. Hell is the primary reason why God sent Jesus Christ to pay the penalty for our sins. I am not going to post all the Scriptures that confirm that statement as I think everyone can do that for themselves, sense there is just too many to post.

Now since that is Biblically the truth, then being “extinguished/annihilated” after death is no fate to dread or fear, but an eternity in hell most definitely is. Jesus’ death was an infinite death, paying our infinite sin debt so that we would not have to pay it in hell for eternity.

Now what does the truth of Scriptures tell us?? 2 Corthians 5:21.....
"For our sake he made him to be sin who knew no sin, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God."

When we place our faith in Him, we are saved, forgiven, cleansed, and promised an eternal home in heaven. But if we reject God’s gift of eternal life, we will face the eternal consequences of that decision.

Revelation 20:10 (ESV)
" and the devil who had deceived them was thrown into the lake of fire and sulfur where the beast and the false prophet were, and they will be tormented day and night forever and ever."

If you would like to talk more about this without sarcasm, just let me know.

We have had threads that went on and on about it. In the OP it was stated that there was not to be an intense debate so I am trying to respect that.
