How Many Christians Knew the Words of the Bible - Before...

Just a curiosity, how many Christians, when they were new Christians, just seemed to know the teachings of the bible for no reason at all, without ever having read it much?

To me that is really weird. It started at about the same time I met my husband. We came from two different faiths, and I had been, prior to my meeting him having some spiritual dilemmas and struggles. After I met him however, I literally felt as if I was under some kind of spiritual attack - nearly constantly.

From time to time I would have a thought come into my head that I just had to say, either to someone I was speaking to or on another forum etc - so I would say it. Well, my husband (before he was my husband) would tell me, "That is a bible verse" and I'd be like nooooo.... and he would show me, that what I just said was from the bible.

It's happened quite a lot now... I'm getting a bit preachy really since much of what I need to say apparently comes from the bible. This is, from never having had one. It's a lot of what made me really start looking into Christianity since the knowledge didn't come from myself.

Are things like this regular occurrences for new/prospective Christians?

(PS. there is a reason I don't ask my husband about religion, we made an agreement prior to our marriage and its best to stick with it, at least for now)

No. That is not a common occurrence. Most folks who have not read the Bible could not quote it if their very lives depended on it.

Though people DO MISQUOTE the bible frequently.

A lot of truths that can be found in the Bible are universally known. Most people who have never read the Bible, never invested themselves in considering Christianity, or never ever even been exposed to it know about the Nativity, the Gospel, etc.

Even some expressions and idioms commonly used today are Biblical; Golden rule, "I wash my hands of it," etc.

While Christianity is very counter-cultural, it has definitely left a mark in mainstream culture. Even a lot of Scripture down to the reference, is well-known in the mainstream, like John 3:16 -- a verse which many people who have never even been to church could quote this one.

But you'll also get tons of misinterpretations/misquotes, etc. Just because they know OF it doesn't mean they know it itself. In fact, many people try to exploit their agendas through Scripture without further understanding. Dan Savage, for instance, loves to use comparison of Mosaic laws to demean Christians who oppose homosexuality.

Millions throughout time have been born from above (the Spirit of Christ comes and dwells in all who receive Him - John 1:12; Acts 2:38) who cannot/could not read...just the facts....salvation is not dependent on having read or on reading the Bible...faith comes by hearing...how shall they know if they have not heard and how shall they hear if no one has told them (paraphrasing Paul)...

Ephesians 1:13....And you also were included in Christ when you heard the message of truth, the gospel of your salvation. When you believed, you were marked in him with a seal, the promised Holy Spirit

Mmmm! Yummy meat!

Okay. So Jesus wanted me to hear the bible - and so then, put words on my heart to speak? I would suppose that would make sense, otherwise I would not hear the bible - or read it - any other way.

But that seems like... Jesus cares about me personally. I know the bible says that He does, but I cannot make this compute into my head. I have a hard time understanding exactly why, when there are so many people in the world so much better than me. And then if me, why me?

No.... I do know may of the little phrases used in America commonly, but no... I'm talking actual bible verses - and quoting nearly word for word. My background is not very... conducive to actually hearing lots of bible verses lets just say. Not that I didn't know about Christianity, I just wasn't someone to ever debate the topic or accidentally come across large swaths of bible thinking or teaching.

The only reason I much spoke to Christians and the reason I met my own husband, was arguing about my (now previous) religion

As a child, were you taken to church by your patents???

I know I was. I had a real DRUG problem. Every time the doors of the church were open, my parents DRUG me to church. I did not want to be there. I sat and day dreamed and wrote notes and fiddled with everything I could. But low and behold 20 years later, I would recall the preachers words, or sermon topic and Bible verses would pop into my mind.

I guess what I am saying is that even though I was not paying any attention........sublimely the words were being absorbed!

Could that be something that happened to you as well?

No. I come from a different faith.

Everyone has sin so from a standpoint of the law there is none better or worse because sin simply cannot dwell in the presence of God without it being dealt with. Apparently, you, when you heard the gospel and were convicted received Him and the others have heard and then rejected Him only to those who receive Him does He give the right/power to become the children of God....to those who reject Him and the knowledge of Him He gives them over to their reprobate mind....

Jesus says "Behold, I stand at the door and knock, if anyone opens the door I will come in and dine with them..."! He foreknew that when the Spirit convicted you through the message of grace that you would believe and receive...sadly there are most who will not....

Paul

Thank you. This makes sense and is actually very comforting. Thank you very much for taking time to speak with me.

Let me tell you, God is doing some pretty amazing things "Converting" Muslims back to Him....
Reading about evangelism in Muslim countries - where people are literally under threat of death and disowning by their own families...

God is sending dreams of Angels - and even Jesus himself to muslims....

You gotta remember.... God knows his own.. and he is gathering them...

Something big is brewing....

I thought I knew the words of the bible, but it turns out that I really didn't know. There is a wealth of info that you can still uncover.
