Music

What kind of music (I am assuming it is Christian) do you guys like?

Have you guys listened to the album from Hillsong United "Zion"?

It is so good I bought it on CD and MP3!

Here are some of the songs, tell me what you think!

I tried the top two and they are "ouch" to me. My own tastes (as often stated) in music are mixed with tastes that can include some classical, ragtime, musical, although my primary interest was folk. The newer Chirstian music seems to follow popular genres unfamiliar to me (who's own pop music teens growing up includes Glam Rock and Punk).

With regard to church music, I'm largely (I suppose) traditional.

This time of the year, I was thinking it would me nice to get to a harvest festival and belt out "We Plough The Fields And Scatter".

I like pretty much everything from heavy metal to country to most everything in between. The only thing I don't like it that ghetto-rap that doesn't even have singing or instruments. That said, my all time favorite genre is, Southern Rock (Skynyrd, Allman Brothers, Outlaws, Blackfoot, Marshall Tucker Band, Credence Clearwater Revival, etc.). They were all before my time but I've still seen a few of them play (or what's left of them). And as I type this, Christian Contemporary is on Pandora.

Have you tried Maylene and the Sons of Disaster?

I like most genres of music, but I mainly listen to all the screaming stuff.

I don't like mixing my Christianity with my music. Music is a major part of my life and usually I find when it is mixed with things like religion or politics, both things end up being diluted or compromised. But I don't see this as a problem because a purely instrumental piece of music can bring out strong emotions and often those of a spiritual nature.

I have also heard really terrible Christian music. I discuss this phenomenon with my pastor all the time, he feels the same way. Often the music is very insubstantial or downright boring and just something hung on to the words without having been given much consideration.

I know this one has a name that would point you that way but just when you only know the melody

It's very difficult to find a legitimate Christian band that I enjoy. I usually find the music cheap, pale derivatives of their genres. Christian music itself is either it's very own genre (one of which I just can't enjoy) or it's an attempt to sound like another genre but with Christian lyrics...and when this happens, it sounds more like a parody.

Christian music I genuinely enjoy are old hymnals, chants, and gospel bluegrass from the 30s and 40s.

Outside of that, I am a big fan of electronic (Futurecop, Anoraak, Grum, RAC), 70s punk (The Ramones, the Dictators, Television), 1950s and 60s bands and singers (Frankie Avalon, Bobby Rydell, Annette Funicello, Chuck Berry, Dion and the Belmonts), and a lot of other stuff.

Just now, I was listening to the Smashing Pumpkins. Growing up in the 90s, I was very selective of grunge. I love grunge but I can't stand Nirvana. But Smashing Pumpkins have always been a favorite when it came to grunge. While they did give a sense of angst and sadness in some of their songs, they balanced it very well with hopeful songs. This is one of my favorites of theirs.

You guys should listen to Hillsong/Hillsong United! Amazing Christian band.

Listen to "From the Inside Out", "Mighty to Save", and maybe even "Came to My Rescue". Oh my, they have so many good songs. "Hallelujah" is a good one, too. And don't forget "Salvation is Here"!

The thing with Hillsong isn't that they're bad. They're descent. But they just seem like a parody of Arcade Fire or something along those lines. I don't blame anyone for liking them (or anything for that matter), but I can't get into it.

Eh. I've just come to really enjoy worship music because I can listen to it and think about Jesus.

I mean what are you thinking about when listening to other bands, like Smashing Pumpkins? Just curious.

I used to listen to Tool and feel super spiritual/cool and such, but I gave all that up.

Depends on what I'm listening to. Smashing Pumpkins specifically, it would also depends on the song. The one I posted (Tonight, Tonight), because I've seen the video, I think of Georges Méliès movies or the video itself. Nothing of real substance, just interesting visuals...or even just the chords themselves.
