Receiving The Baptism Of The Holy Spirit

Dubious is not a term I would use, maybe some question...but I believe its clearly backed-up as reliable. Even your own post on the discussion lends toward its acceptance, so not sure how you could make that post and then use the term "dubious"?

I changed my mind during the course of the discussion. Until today I had only read articles that cast doubt into this passage, but today I read very good articles supporting the authenticity of Mark 16:9-20. So, now it seems to me that this passage could actually be authentic. At least there's no definitive evidence against its authenticity.

What's aggressive about agreeing that there is no evidence against the authenticity of Mark 16?

Maybe I misunderstood you. I thought you were offended by the fact that I said that "at least there is no definitive evidence against its authenticity" as if I were blaspheming or something. Sorry if I understood you wrong.

No, I was in full agreement! Blessings!

Sorry if I'm coming in late here, back to the original question.

How many were in the upper room? 120
How many different languages are listed in Acts 2 that the people were hearing? 16
Simple math, 120-16=104, ...not all spoke with tongues on the day of Pentecost.

Now does Scripture back that up?

Acts 6, the choosing of the 7 deacons filled with the Holy Spirit, 7 Hellenist Jew were chosen, note they all had Greek names, where the disciples that spoke in tongues on the day of Pentecost were Galileans, not Grecian Jews.

We mustn't take Mark 16:17 out of context, Jesus started speaking to them in Mk 16:15 and His command was to go into all of the world and preach the Gospel, which He clarified later even more by stating to start in Jerusalem, then Samaria and then the ends of the world, the speaking in tongues in Jerusalem was sign to them, the Centurion and his family was a sign that the Gospel had reached Samaria and then the disciples in Ephesus was two fold, the Gospel had reached the ends of the World and Paul was the 12th Apostle and not Matthias, further conformation is in Colossians 1:6 where Paul states the Gospel has been preached in all of the world.

I too have had the gifts the Holy Spirit was giving to me pronounced over me by the pastor and assistant pastor, but the empowerment or the filling didn't come until months later when I left to come here by the laying on of hands by the elders of my church, I didn't receive the gift of speaking in tongues, but I need it, but the gifts I do have are supernaturally empowered.

Like has already been stated, I'm not really interested in a prayer language because I have so many things to pray about I would always wonder if they all were prayed for if I was not coherent during my praying.

My two cents,

Blessings,

Gene

Every single disciple was filled with the Holy spirit in that upper room and every single one of them spoke in another tongue.

Acts 2:1-4 (NLT)
On the day of Pentecost all the believers were meeting together in one place. 2 Suddenly, there was a sound from heaven like the roaring of a mighty windstorm, and it filled the house where they were sitting. 3 Then, what looked like flames or tongues of fire appeared and settled on each of them. 4 And everyone present was filled with the Holy Spirit and began speaking in other languages, as the Holy Spirit gave them this ability.

If you don't speak in tongues how are you going to pray in the spirit? We are suppose to pray with our mind, and also pray with our spirit. If we are only praying with our understanding, then we are not praying all that we should.

1Co 14:14 For if I pray in a tongue, my spirit prays but my mind is unfruitful.
1Co 14:15 What am I to do? I will pray with my spirit, but I will pray with my mind also; I will sing praise with my spirit, but I will sing with my mind also.

Let's go back a couple of chapters :)

1 Corinthians 12

29 All are not apostles, are they? All are not prophets, are they? All are not teachers, are they? All are not workers of miracles, are they? 30 All do not have gifts of healings, do they? All do not speak with tongues, do they? All do not interpret, do they?31 But earnestly desire the greater gifts.

There is no mandate in Bible that a person filled with Holy Spirit must speak in tongues.. And that speaking in tongues is the only sign of being filled with Holy Spirit.. It is more of an inference based on the events around Pentecost.. The above verse makes it quite clear not everyone is going to receive the gift of speaking in tongues..

when you recieved the holy spirit, did you speak in tongues, or do you believe in tongues,
when i recieved the holyspirit i spoke in tongues.:):):)
I received the Holy Spirit, I did not speak in tongues.. I do believe in tongues, but not that one should definitely speak in tongues to show that he or she is filled with Holy Spirit

Great to hear you do speak in tongues! Have someone interpreted your tongues? That is another peculiar gift.. In fact, I have never come across one who have claimed to have that gift..

Speaking in tongues is a particular gift that God gives some people that is useful to the body of Christ, the congregation, where He is able to give messages to the people. But praying in tongues is a different gift that all can avail themselves of---where Holy Spirit speaks to God on our behalf. It is holy communication going in a different direction. The gift of interpretation is not necessary in that ability.

I don't know if there is any verse which backs this up.. I am not questioning, but asking with willingness to learn :)

Paul speaks about it, and says he does it all the time.

Public Gift of Tongues
Spoken with interpretation to the church (Equal to prophecy-1 Corinthians 14:5)

To be interpreted (1 Corinthians 14:5)

Edifies the church (when interpreted-1 Corinthians 14:4-5)

A sign to unbelievers (1 Corinthians 14:22)

Personal Prayer Tongues
Spoken privately to God (1 Corinthians 14:2)

No interpretation necessary (1 Corinthians 14:28)

Edifies the individual believer (1 Corinthians 14:4)

Can be manifested when no unbelievers are present (Acts 10:46; 19:6)

Should be desired and practiced by all Christians (Mark 16:17; 1 Corinthians 14:5; Ephesians 6:18; Jude 20 ).

There was a sister in my church who used to speak in tongues and then prophesy and then speak in tongues again and then prophecy. I never ask her, but maybe she was translating what the Spirit said when she was speaking in tongues. I should have asked her.

Here we go again!!!

Why can't we just believe and trust in faith in what the Holy Spirit has revealed to each one of us personally, and not disrupt the unity of the brethren?

Why is it those that say they speak in tongues are the first to start an argument, is that the evidence of the love of the Holy Spirit in you???

As has been already stated, Paul INSPIRED BY THE HOLLY SPIRIT asked a rhetorical question to the Corinthian church that was abusing the gift, "do all speak in tongues?" the question implying the answer, NO, ...that is the purpose of the rhetorical question!

I have many friends, Godly men of God, men used mightily by the Lord that have a prayer language, however we never hear it in public, ...I'm soo tried of hearing this false doctrine that when someone is filled with the Holy Spirit they will pray in tongues, this heresy didn't even exist in the Church until the Azusa Street Revival in 1906, ...and after yesterday I will have to deal with two different groups of youth in the church, those that think they are speaking in tongues, but are still clearly living in sin and those that will ask why wasn't I, why didn't the Holy Spirit give me tongues? The former group will have their faith shipwrecked when reality and the Truth finally sets in and the latter's, their faith is already shipwrecked!!!

And you are trying to tell me that is the same loving Heavenly Father of Jn 3:16, Paul, again by the inspiration of the Holy Spirit was correct in calling the abusers of the gift of tongues unspiritual and babies in Christ. 1 Cor 3:1

Why does it always have to be your way or else?

I apologize for my anger, but these super spiritual that mutter and peep Is 8:19 are never at a prayer meeting, never at a Bible study, never volunteer to help clean the church and never volunteer to help with those that are hurting or in need.

I hope and pray this thread is locked immediately so that we don't show our dirty laundry to the watching world!

*sigh* ...more judging...

Don't see any arguing going on here. Not all have the spiritual gift of ministering to the body of Christ in tongues, that is a given, but all believers can pray in tongues if they simply ask God for it.

I will answer Ravi's question.

Cretes and Arabians, we do hear them speak in our tongues the wonderful works of God. Acts 2:11

The word is megaleios works, not prophesy to the Church prophēteuō, ...speaking in tongues is telling the wonderful works God has done, ...prophesy is a different gift.

Why is it so hard to see?
