1 Kings 22 - Who Is The Deceiving Spirit?

19 Micaiah continued, “Therefore hear the word of the Lord: I saw the Lord sitting on his throne with all the multitudes of heaven standing around him on his right and on his left. 20 And the Lord said, ‘Who will entice Ahab into attacking Ramoth Gilead and going to his death there?’“One suggested this, and another that. 21 Finally, a spirit came forward, stood before the Lord and said, ‘I will entice him.’22 “‘By what means?’ the Lord asked.“‘I will go out and be a deceiving spirit in the mouths of all his prophets,’ he said.“‘You will succeed in enticing him,’ said the Lord. ‘Go and do it.’ (1 Kings 22:19-22)

Is there any speculation or evidence of who this spirit of the Lord is or does it just happen to be a random unknown spirit?

I think Micaiah is just explaining how God is simply "allowing" false prophesy to deceive Ahab and having His will accomplished.. A literal interpretation of these verses would mean God is author of evil.. Which can never be.. I think it is more symbolic and Micaiah is trying to get his point through by stressing strong that God is allowing this to happen.. I would consider it to be similar to how pharaoh's heart was hardened.. How Jesus tells Judas to go and do whatever he has to do fast (which was not a command, but allowing Judas to do what Judas willed to do)..

It's my understanding, that satan and possibly other fallen angels, have access to God and His throne. (Story of Job) This may be one such instance. Remember that God allows free will among humans and I assume this includes heavenly beings. (Angels and such) Not until the great battle in Heaven, will satan and his followers be cast out and down to the earth.

I agree with the previous poster, most likely Satan him self. It was not a spirit from the Lord, just a spirit. I do not believe the Lord was looking for someone to do this deceiving, he was simply asking who was going to do it. Similar case is found when Jesus told Judas, "What you do, do quickly" Jesus did not tell him to be a traitor, but do quickly what he had already planned to do.

I still look at it differently..The style of language is very similar to what we find about David taking census.. This is recorded in 2 Samuel 24

1 Again the anger of the Lord was kindled against Israel, and he incited David against them, saying, “Go, number Israel and Judah.”

The same event is quoted in 1 Chronicles 21 as below,

1 Then Satan stood against Israel and incited David to number Israel.

It is a case of Satan trying to deceive David and Lord permitting it.. A strong language is used in 1 Samuel. I see it as a strong language used to enforce the fact that God allowed it to happen..

Very interesting scriptures, Do you suppose when we are doing evil, that causes God's protection to be removed.
I like this scripture....

Ecc 10:8 He that diggeth a pit shall fall into it; and whoso breaketh an hedge, a serpent shall bite him.

I don't think that is what I am eluding to..

The point I am trying to make is, these scriptures only point that it was allowed by God.. As James write, God will never tempt a person.. And God is never author of evil.. These are things which Satan does.. But Satan cannot do anything without permission from God.. Our God has to allow it to happen.. Another example is below verse,

Now the Spirit of the LORD had departed from Saul, and an evil spirit from the LORD tormented him.

All these simply mean, Lord allowed Satan.. God is still sovereign and His will would be accomplished always..

So, are you saying God allows Satan to cause harm to man when man is doing nothing to cause it? Or does God allow Satan to cause harm only because man is doing something to cause it?
