How Do We 'love God'?

If you had to explain to someone 'how to love God / fulfil the first commandment', what would you say?

Jesus doesn't make it anymore clearer:

“If you love me, keep my commands."

Whoever has my commands and keeps them is the one who loves me. The one who loves me will be loved by my Father, and I too will love them and show myself to them.”

Jesus replied, “Anyone who loves me will obey my teaching. My Father will love them, and we will come to them and make our home with them.24 Anyone who does not love me will not obey my teaching. These words you hear are not my own; they belong to the Father who sent me.

Definitely some good verses to start the day off.

Well it is written that we can say we "love God" but unless we love others according to the "law of Christ" we are lying. So only in the Royal law are we keeping that which the first Commandment required.

"I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing. 6 If you do not remain in me, you are like a branch that is thrown away and withers; such branches are picked up, thrown into the fire and burned. 7 If you remain in me and my words remain in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be done for you. 8 This is to my Father’s glory, that you bear much fruit, showing yourselves to be my disciples. 9 “As the Father has loved me, so have I loved you. Now remain in my love. 10 If you keep my commands, you will remain in my love, just as I have kept my Father’s commands and remain in his love. 11 I have told you this so that my joy may be in you and that your joy may be complete. 12 My command is this: Love each other as I have loved you. 13 Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one’s life for one’s friends.14 You are my friends if you do what I command." John 15:5-14.

Loving God is abiding in Him. It is being led by His Spirit in all things (i.e. obeying Him!). It is being willing to be all that He has called us to be....for this is to His joy!

@ mitspa, we can't love others, our love in tainted with conditions and come with strings attached. We have to let the HS with in us love others the way He does with agape love.

( I learned that from my Pastor.)

Still good topic you touched on. :)

Well we very much can love others..we have Gods love shed abroad in our hearts by the Holy Spirit and we, in turn love others by what has first been given to us. This is the true keeping of the commandments of God. (law written upon the heart) In and of ourselves we are not able..I agree ,but we are not of ourselves we are of Christ. :)

Nice to see we have such a consensus.

I have been meditating on how do we love God more? What is the greatest way to show our love for God? What is the difference between the first and second commandments? Why Jesus says commandment 1 = love God and commandment 2 = love others as self....and not, 'commandment one is love God, achieved by loving others'.

So, what is loving God.... without loving others? What prompted the sin focused commandments? What caused God to sweat blood? It is the fact that God hates sin. We love God most when we hate sin and make a firm decision to deal with it.

Loving God = getting on our knees, repenting and accepting Jesus. Faithfulness / continually hating and dealing with sin / never giving up the good fight. Dealing with ourselves before God first. Verses like, 'Rom 12:9 'hate evil, cling to what is good' and Josh 24:15 'Choose this day whom you shall serve', come to mind.

Obeying the second commandment will never help fulfil the first, but obeying the first, will help fulfil the second.

When we are by faith moment by moment in God's Spirit the experiential is from the spiritual rather than the physical realm. There is an infinity of God's fruit in the realm of his Spirit and imagination and creation are ever living from His love in which we when in His Spirit give love from. From here we can bless God with love because His perfect love is being given from us to Him in praise and goodness.

Yes! My Brother. John 14:21 Wonderful!

1Jo 3:23 ¶ And this is his commandment,(1) That we should believe on the name of his Son Jesus Christ, (2) and love one another, as he gave us commandment.
24 And he that keepeth his commandments dwelleth in him, and he in him. And hereby we know that he abideth in us, by the Spirit which he hath given us.

Don't be led astray from the "simplicity" that is in Christ...

I think I love the Lord, when I see of Him. It helps me appreciate him.
My form of love (perhaps is wrong, I don't know), isn't as much a 'doing the right thing'-type of love, as it is an admiration love.
Seeing God do things in my life, makes me happy, and makes me praise Him in my heart.
Makes me thank Him. Makes me more appreciative of Him, and makes me sing about Him.

For me, love comes by seeing God, and seeing God comes by seeking Him, and allowing Him to reveal Himself in my life!

Sounds like an emotion that goes with the package....after all we are in a relationship with Him! :)

Tell me though - what do you think about obedience?
