How Does One Keep The Sabbath And Does It Apply To The New Covenant

So there we have it...a twofold question...

a) How does one keep the Sabbath (if they believe they must)

b) Is keeping the Sabbath applicable the same way in the two Covenants (Old and New)

My first premise is that modern Sabbatarians do not keep the Sabbath the way God commanded...

Let's discuss

brother Paul

In my opinion....

Since Christ came; we treat everyday as the sabbath: remembering, worshiping, bringing glory to God, living out the Christian life in obedience...

But we don't want to really give God EVERY day do we? I know I fail at this....

Christ fulfilled the law in love (completed the rest of the week...?); He didn't 'abolish' the sabbath, but expanded on its purpose.

Again-in my humble opinion...

Hello, I must apologize, I'm just a newbie on here so trying to get into the mix a little. I believe once we recognize that the preparation for the Sabbath was Friday, that the Sabbath was Saturday and that the New Testament Church met "on the first day of the week" Sunday we can have a clearer picture of the actual Sabbath day however, keeping OT laws and tradition for me would be just that, OT and not required for the New Covenant believer. I think if people want to keep the Sabbath they could, although I'm not sure how they could but if they do, not to ask others to keep it. Jesus fulfilled the law in it's entirety to set us free and going back to old laws is dangerous for the soul and as Paul put it - "sin taking occasion by the commandment, deceived me and slew me" - "the sting of death is sin and the strength of sin is the law". I believe any law other than Christ's "to love one another as I have loved you" (NT) is a dangerous thing to take on seeing what it can do. Jesus fulfilling the law on our behalf is one of the primary results of the cross, he did what no man could do, keep the law in thought, word and deed every day from his birth to his death to bring the OT to a close and usher in his NT in his Grace - Blessings....

Hebrews 4 1- 4:3 says, "Therefore, since the promise of entering his rest still stands, let us be careful that none of you be found to have fallen short of it. 2 For we also have had the good news proclaimed to us, just as they did; but the message they heard was of no value to them, because they did not share the faith of those who obeyed. 3 Now we who have believed enter that rest"

Hebrews 4:8-10 says, 8"For if Joshua had given them rest, God would not have spoken later about another day. 9There remains, then, a Sabbath-rest for the people of God; 10for anyone who enters God’s rest also rests from their works,e just as God did from his."

Living in the Spirit is living in God's rest for we are done with works for the works done in the Spirit are not ours, but God's. As believers in the Spirit every moment is consecrated to God. In the flesh there is no rest.

I like the use of the verses you've shared, Christ is our Sabbath Rest....

Olivia nailed it!

As for me.....just a few more verses that lay down the concept:

When you were dead [a]in your transgressions and the uncircumcision of your flesh, He made you alive together with Him, having forgiven us all our transgressions, 14 having canceled out the certificate of debt consisting of decrees against us, which was hostile to us; and He has taken it out of the way, having nailed it to the cross. 15 When He had [b]disarmed the rulers and authorities, He made a public display of them, having triumphed over them through [c]Him. 16 Therefore no one is to [d]act as your judge in regard to food or drink or in respect to a festival or a new moon or a Sabbath [e]day— 17 things which are a mere shadow of what is to come; but the [f]substance [g]belongs to Christ." Colossians 2:13-17.

Is not the Old Testament - from its righteous rules to the festivals - a foreshadow of all that was to come with Christ? Is not Christ the fulfillment of the Law? "For Christ has already accomplished the purpose for which the law was given. As a result, all who believe in him are made right with God." Romans 10:14. Clearly, what we have - our very salvation - all rests in Christ. This is not enhanced nor decreased by the keeping of holidays (including sabbath).

If a Christian wants to keep the Sabbath, I will say nothing against them. But it is no longer required since Christ is the fulfillment of the Old Testament Sabbath. For those who are in Him, He is the Rest - He is the Sabbath.

So there we have it...a twofold question...

a) How does one keep the Sabbath (if they believe they must)

by "keeping it holy" means to try "avoiding sin" even harder .. of course IF you break a commandment and you are sincerely repentant, God is just to forgive it ..

of course we have to ..

Mat 19:17 And He said to him, “Why are you asking Me about what is good? There is only One who is good; but if you wish to enter into life, keep the commandments.”

b) Is keeping the Sabbath applicable the same way in the two Covenants (Old and New)

yes .. the 10 commandments are separate from the Law of Moses (covenant) given them later on .. this is WHY God told Moses to put the 10 commandments IN the Ark (Exod 25:16) and WHY He said place the Law given Moses on a table as a testament against them (Deu 31:26) .. because one is permanent, the other is temporary (to be replaced) ..

2Ch 5:10 There was nothing in the ark except the two tablets which Moses put there at Horeb, where the LORD made a covenant with the sons of Israel, when they came out of Egypt.

note:
Deu 11:1 is one of the many verses that show they are separate ..

My first premise is that modern Sabbatarians do not keep the Sabbath the way God commanded...

I "think" that God made it rigid to begin with ..
it's rigidness still exists, but only if we do not repent if we fail ..

Hello,

hi ..

I believe once we recognize that the preparation for the Sabbath was Friday, that the Sabbath was Saturday and that the New Testament Church met "on the first day of the week" Sunday we can have a clearer picture of the actual Sabbath day

actually, the Sabbath begins at 6pm Friday to 6pm Saturday ..

however, keeping OT laws and tradition for me would be just that, OT and not required for the New Covenant believer. I think if people want to keep the Sabbath they could, although I'm not sure how they could but if they do, not to ask others to keep it. Jesus fulfilled the law in it's entirety to set us free and going back to old laws is dangerous for the soul and as Paul put it -

Jesus says not one iota of it shall be removed until all is completed .
Paul says that their covenant disappears "when the time of the Gentile is fulfilled" ..
the reason for this is God still loves the Jews, and does not leave them covenantless ..
to abandon the 10 commandments is rebellion against God and self ..

Mat 19:17 And He said to him, “Why are you asking Me about what is good? There is only One who is good; but if you wish to enter into life, keep the commandments.”
Jhn 14:15If you love Me, you will keep My commandments.
1Jo 2:3 By this we know that we have come to know Him, if we keep His commandments.

"sin taking occasion by the commandment, deceived me and slew me" - "the sting of death is sin and the strength of sin is the law". I believe any law other than Christ's "to love one another as I have loved you" (NT) is a dangerous thing to take on seeing what it can do.

Jesus says it is dangerous not to (Mat 19:17) ..

Jesus had NO intention of taking away the Law of Moses ..
OR nullifying the 10 Commandments ..
He did want us to get under the covenant of Faith, but the 10 Commandments is relevant to either covenant ..

Mat 5:17 Think not that I am come to destroy the law, or the prophets: I am not come to destroy, but to fulfill.
Mat 5:18 For verily I say unto you, Till heaven and earth pass, one jot or one tittle shall in no wise pass from the law, till all be fulfilled.

ok .. so Jesus says not one jot, iota or tittle (very minute markings added like a dot) will pass away until all is completed ..

Mat 5:19 Whosoever therefore shall break one of these least commandments, and shall teach men so, he shall be called the least in the kingdom of heaven: but whosoever shall do and teach them, the same shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven.

notice in the above verse, Jesus switches up and goes from addressing the Law of Moses, to the 10 Commandments ..

says, "Jesus replied: “ ‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’c 38This is the first and greatest commandment. 39And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’d 40All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments.”

For us to understand the commandments we have to always read them through these verses. If we truly love the Lord with everything we have then we will be loving him moment to moment, giving ourselves to him every moment, not just one day a week.

to all .. my version capitalizes all quotes from the OT .. hence the caps ..

Hbr 8:6 But now He has obtained a more excellent ministry, by as much as He is also the mediator of a better covenant, which has been enacted on better promises.
Hbr 8:7 For if that first covenant had been faultless, there would have been no occasion sought for a second.
Hbr 8:8 For finding fault with them, He says, “BEHOLD, DAYS ARE COMING, SAYS THE LORD, WHEN I WILL EFFECT A NEW COVENANT WITH THE HOUSE OF ISRAEL AND WITH THE HOUSE OF JUDAH;
(meaning the covenant of Faith)
Hbr 8:9 NOT LIKE THE COVENANT WHICH I MADE WITH THEIR FATHERS ON THE DAY WHEN I TOOK THEM BY THE HAND TO LEAD THEM OUT OF THE LAND OF EGYPT; FOR THEY DID NOT CONTINUE IN MY COVENANT, AND I DID NOT CARE FOR THEM, SAYS THE LORD.
Hbr 8:10 “FOR THIS IS THE COVENANT THAT I WILL MAKE WITH THE HOUSE OF ISRAEL AFTER THOSE DAYS, SAYS THE LORD: I WILL PUT MY LAWS INTO THEIR MINDS, AND I WILL WRITE THEM ON THEIR HEARTS. AND I WILL BE THEIR GOD, AND THEY SHALL BE MY PEOPLE.
Hbr 8:11 “AND THEY SHALL NOT TEACH EVERYONE HIS FELLOW CITIZEN, AND EVERYONE HIS BROTHER, SAYING, ‘KNOW THE LORD,’ FOR ALL WILL KNOW ME, FROM THE LEAST TO THE GREATEST OF THEM.
Hbr 8:12 “FOR I WILL BE MERCIFUL TO THEIR INIQUITIES, AND I WILL REMEMBER THEIR SINS NO MORE.”
(which IS the covenant of Faith with forgiveness through repentance)
Hbr 8:13 When He said, “A new covenant,” He has made the first obsolete. But whatever is becoming obsolete and growing old is ready to disappear.

ok .. so Paul is saying it is obsolete, and the converted Jew are no longer under it, but does still exist for those Jews who continue in disbelief ..

here Paul is telling us EXACTLY when their covenant will disappear ..

Rom 11:25 For I do not want you, brethren, to be uninformed of this mystery—so that you will not be wise in your own estimation—that a partial hardening has happened to Israel until the fullness of the Gentiles has come in;

the "mystery" is the rapture, which when the church is removed (with the HS) then God the Father takes an active role again and turns his attention once more to the Jews ..
then God sends his two witlessness (the ones that gave them the Law) to tell them that is over and they MUST accept Christ .. (read Rom 11:17-32)
though Rom 11:29 applies to all .. it is specifically speaking about the Promise God made to the Hebrews, He will keep ..

God Bless all ..

indeed .. the other 8 commandment can be filed under those two Commandments ..
the 10 Commandments ARE the Law of Christ ..

if you love God, you do not have idols, you keep his Sabbath holy etc ..
if you love neighbor as self, you do not bare false witness, you do not covet, murder etc ..

The sabbath was made for man, a gift? (Doesn't say 'Jew' does it?)

Jesus Christ is also Lord of the Sabbath. Who is our Lord; right? The Author of the commandments?

Maybe I am just confused...

you sound like you understand Jesus is talking about gaining salvation in this verse ..

Mat 19:17 And He said to him, “Why are you asking Me about what is good? There is only One who is good; but if you wish to enter into life, keep the commandments.”

and these two apply directly to what Olivia posted ..

Jhn 14:15 “If you love Me, you will keep My commandments.
1 Jo 2:3 By this we know that we have come to know Him, if we keep His commandments.

With the New Covenant it is not about a list of do’s and don’ts….He did it on our behalf knowing we (who were under bondage to Satan and his minions)…that’s why when He speaks to the rich young ruler who had kept all the commandments since young that “after you have done all I commanded you say to yourself, you unworthy servant, you have only done your duty

If it was about a list of do’s and don’ts there would be no need for the Cross…an atheist can follow a set of do’s and don’ts…

Love IS the fulfillment of the Law….Christ fulfilled the law by His death, burial, and resurrection, and we who are born from above are IN HIM….

Now for the 10 Commandments…Christ redefined them and we obey (and live) the Spirit of the law…the letters written in stone brought death and grace and truth came through Jesus Christ.

2 Corinthians 3 - 3 Forasmuch as you are manifestly declared to be the epistle of Christ ministered by us, written not with ink, but with the Spirit of the living God; not in tables of stone (like the 10 Commandments), but in fleshy tables of the heart (by the indwelling Spirit of God). 4 And such is the trust have we through Christ toward God: 5 Not that we are sufficient of ourselves to think anything of ourselves (like as if we keep the commandments and others do not); but our sufficiency is of God (because it is not by what we do or have done, but of Christ); 6 Who also hath made us able ministers of the New Testament; not of the letter, but of the spirit: for the letter kills (brings death), but the spirit gives life (His life in us the expectation of glory).

7 But if the ministration of death (the sin consciousness brought on by the Law), written and engraved in stones (that is the 10 Commandments), was glorious, so that the children of Israel could not steadfastly behold the face of Moses because of the glory of his countenance; which glory eventually faded (because by the commandments they were all guilty): 8 How shall the ministration of the Spirit not be even more glorious (who while we were yet sinners Christ dies for the ungodly…by love and grace)?

9 For if the ministration of condemnation be glory, much more doth the ministration of righteousness exceed in glory (that righteousness which is by faith and not works).

10 For even that which was made glorious had no glory in this respect, by reason of the glory that excels (for it never ends). 11 For if that which is done away was glorious, much more is that which remains glorious.

Through the Law comes the knowledge of sin…though grace the love of God to-usward…the ministry of death was engraved on stone and the ministry of righteousness engraved on our hearts by the knowledge of salvation.

Romans 7: 6 But now we are delivered from the law, that being dead wherein we were held; that we should serve in newness of spirit, and not in the oldness of the letter.

7 What shall we say then? Is the law sin? God forbid. Nay, I had not known sin, but by the law: for I had not known lust, except the law had said, Thou shalt not covet.

8 But sin, taking occasion by the commandment, wrought in me all manner of concupiscence. For without the law sin was dead.

9 For I was alive without the law once: but when the commandment came, sin revived, and I died.

Alive apart from the law…dead by the law! Alive through Christ’s sufficient and pleasing sacrifice.

Colossians 2 13 And you, being dead in your sins and the uncircumcision of your flesh, hath he quickened together with him, having forgiven you all your trespasses;

14 Blotting out the handwriting of ordinances that was against us (the Law), which was contrary to us, and took it out of the way, nailing it to his cross.

So He not only nailed our sins to the cross but also the ordinances against us so they no longer have any effect…by grace we are SAVED.

So He not only nailed our sins to the cross but also the ordinances against us so they no longer have any effect…by grace we are SAVED.

amen ..
grace is mercy ..
the Law of Moses was a "testament" against them ..
and as Paul said, if they broke one part, they were guilty of all the Law ..
we do not, nor ever have had the Law of Moses as a testament against us as gentiles ..

Deu 31:26 “Take this book of the law and place it beside the ark of the covenant of the LORD your God, that it may remain there as a witness against you.

But we don't want to really give God EVERY day do we?

The sabbath was made for man, a gift? (Doesn't say 'Jew' does it?)

Jesus Christ is also Lord of the Sabbath. Who is our Lord; right? The Author of the commandments?

I totally hear where you are going with that Mike, and you are not wrong, we absolutely do want to give God every day. But the really awesome thing about the fourth commandment is that it is simply: rest. The entire commandment is:

Exodus 20
8 “Remember the Sabbath day by keeping it holy.9 Six days you shall labor and do all your work,10 but the seventh day is a sabbath to the Lord your God. On it you shall not do any work, neither you, nor your son or daughter, nor your male or female servant, nor your animals, nor any foreigner residing in your towns.11 For in six days the Lord made the heavens and the earth, the sea, and all that is in them, but he rested on the seventh day. Therefore the Lord blessed the Sabbath day and made it holy.

The temptation is to read the fourth commandment and say, "okay, but what does it mean to keep it holy? Surely we can deduce that it means there is some requirement for us to do... x, y, z... Whatever it occurs to us is the holiest of things to do, surely this is a commandment to do those things on that day."

The OT Rabbis burdened people with the yoke of their interpretations of what the fourth commandment meant, but we take on the yoke of Christ:

Mat 11:29-30, "Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.”

Jesus is Lord of the Sabbath, therefore we can find our rest in Him (as evidenced by this verse Tressa referred to):

Col 2:16-17
Therefore let no one pass judgment on you in questions of food and drink, or with regard to a festival or a new moon or a Sabbath. These are a shadow of the things to come, and the substance belongs to Christ.

The OT Hebrews were given one day to rest, but the written law was a shadow of what was to come, but the substance belongs to Christ. What Christ revealed about the fourth commandment is that God's gift of rest is not about taking a break from work once a week. God's gift of rest is about finding our rest in Christ, 24/7.

Anyone who finds their rest in Christ completely submits to what Christ has revealed about the fourth commandment.

But Mike, your heart is completely in the right place, we really do need to do all things for the sake of the gospel, every day. That's just not what the fourth commandment is about :) Always appreciate your passion, Mike. Your love for God is evident in what you're saying here.

Brother_Mike_V ..
I think your verse you brought out is very good ..
how do you think it is a gift ???

if you remember right, God rested on the 7th (last day) of creation ..
this is WHEN he enacted the plan for salvation ..
when all appear before the Judgement seat, and He will say "enter faithful servant" ..
THAT is the Sabbath (day rest comes) .. so it WAS made for ALL mankind, and it is a symbolic act (like baptism) that we have embraced God's plan ..

Hbr 4:3 For we who have believed enter that rest, just as He has said, “AS I SWORE IN MY WRATH, THEY SHALL NOT ENTER MY REST,” although His works were finished from the foundation of the world.

the 8th day (as God refers to it) is symbolic of what comes after that, life in heaven ..

so in God's wrath, He cursed mankind because of Adam .. however His plan was already in motion and He IS faithful and sent Jesus for us ..

Hebrews chapter 4 is excellent ..

Since this thread was created with me in mind;) I will address it. I first will say this, if you are honest at heart and are not convicted about the Sabbath truth, then I would dare not ask anyone to go against their conscience. But if your conscience through your genuine study of scripture says otherwise, then do it. Jesus says if you love me, keep my commandments. " John 14:15 If you are inquiring or want to express a disagreement, I would respectfully ask that you do it with a Christian attitude and I will do the same. The wonderful thing about God is he made us with free will, that is what makes our devotion to Him so sweet.

I will personally explain why I keep the Sabbath according to my study of scripture. It is a lengthy thought so I might break it down into little topics. If you agree, so be it, if not, so be it. Fair? We are all in different stages in our spiritual discernment. Lets agree to let the scriptures speak and have the final word. Now here is a summary of my belief about the Sabbath.

I keep the Sabbath because I believe, according to the bible, that it provides us with a glimpse of who Jesus is as creator, as redeemer, and as restorer. By keeping it, this is one of the ways I testify that Jesus is all three of these things to me. Those reasons for me are paramount to my conviction. A secondary reason includes history. For example history shows that Saturday and Sunday were kept for the 2nd, 3rd and part of the 4th century. The new testament also shows that the apostles, Jews and Gentiles often came together for worship on the Sabbath day.

Now, when discussing this controversial subject, the first verse that many elude to is found in the old testament. when Moses comes down from Mount Sinai, in Exo 20:8-11. It reads,

8 Remember the sabbath day, to keep it holy.
9 Six days shalt thou labour, and do all thy work:
10 But the seventh day is the sabbath of the Lord thy God: in it thou shalt not do any work, thou, nor thy son, nor thy daughter, thy manservant, nor thy maidservant, nor thy cattle, nor thy stranger that is within thy gates:
11 For in six days the Lord made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that in them is, and rested the seventh day: wherefore the Lord blessed the sabbath day, and hallowed it.

Few questions arise when we study Exo 20. Why did God give these commandments? Why does God write just the 10 commandments with His own finger twice Exo 31:18, Exo 34:1, and the 612 commands and ordinances he leaves for Moses to write? Exo 34:27 Why then does God give this peculiar commandment to keep the Sabbath day?

Additional questions come when we look at the Sabbath commandment. Why does God say remember? Why must there be rest or a ceasing from works? Even if you believe it is just for the Jews, these are still valid and important questions to answer.

Why does God say remember?

God states specifically to remember to keep it (the seventh day) Holy. So the first part of the command tells us that they (the Jews) were to remember to keep the Sabbath Day holy? Well that is interesting. My question here is if they have to remember it, when did it become Holy? Well lets see what scripture tells us.

Prior to the command issued in Mt. Sinai, we find that the Jews were already being taught the idea of Sabbath keeping. This is found in Exo 16:23-26.

23 And he said unto them, This is that which the Lord hath said, To morrow is the rest of the holy sabbath unto the Lord: bake that which ye will bake to day, and seethe that ye will seethe; and that which remaineth over lay up for you to be kept until the morning.
24 And they laid it up till the morning, as Moses bade: and it did not stink, neither was there any worm therein.
25 And Moses said, Eat that to day; for to day is a sabbath unto the Lord: to day ye shall not find it in the field.
26 Six days ye shall gather it; but on the seventh day, which is the sabbath, in it there shall be none.

God was teaching His people dependence on Him. They were to gather all the manna that God provided once a day and save nothing for the next, less it spoil. (Exo 16:18-20) But the 6th day was different. On that day they had to gather twice as much. (Exo 16:23). And when they did this, it did not spoil (Exo 16:24). Well we might think, this is what God wanted them to remember. Perhaps in part, but is this when the Sabbath became Holy? Moses tells them "Tommorrow is the rest of the holy sabbath" He indicates to them, that the holy sabbath is coming, implying that this day is a day already made Holy and we must be prepared for it.
When does the Sabbath become holy?

The 4th commandment tells us when and why to keep the Sabbath, 11 For (or because) in six days the Lord made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that in them is, and rested the seventh day: wherefore the Lord blessed the sabbath day, and hallowed it.

Here the God of heaven points to creation as the express reason to keep the Sabbath. In addition, he tells us that He blessed that day and hallowed it. But was it blessed at creation or blessed during Israels trek in the dessert?

Gen 2:1-3

2 Thus the heavens and the earth were finished, and all the host of them.

2 And on the seventh day God ended his work which he had made; and he rested on the seventh day from all his work which he had made.

3 And God blessed the seventh day, and sanctified it (set it apart, another words, made it Holy) because that in it he had rested from all his work which God created and made. So when God created mankind (not Jews), he blessed the seventh day, sanctified it or in other words, He made it Holy.

True, man was not commanded to keep the Sabbath at creation. In fact His only command at creation was not to eat of the tree of Good and Evil. I believe, this was a freewill choice by Adam and Eve, to commune and spend time with Jesus on His Holy day. In the bible, when something is Holy, it is because it is entering the very presence of God.

There are a ton of more things to add, but I want to keep it short. As I said, this is my conviction so far, of my study of scripture. More to come, if you desire it.

God Bless,
MoG
