I have a tongue piercing and I will get a belly button piercing soon too. They are just jewelry, right? But I know that tattoos are sinful, but why tattoos are sinful? Or are they just the certain tattoos that are sinful, like tattoo pictures of the Devil or a demon, something evil, etc? I want to get a tattoo, and I want the tattoo to either be a picture of a polar bear, Slytherin symbol, or something about Severus Snape, or some Japanese text.

I believe there is two parts to this. First I would say that because god made us in his image, it would be unwise to try and change the way you look. Secondly we are people and I have never met someone who doesn't modify their appearance in some way.
So I have to ask do you really want it, and what has god told you in your heart on this matter?

Does that mean that even make up is a sin too? I don't put any makeup though because I let my skin breathe and my facial features are normal, and people think that I have a beautiful face, but I do pluck my eyebrows sometimes because I don't like my natural eyebrows, my natural eyebrows are straight and thick, so I make my eyebrows archy and thinner.

But are tattoos sinful if the tattoos are only for some decoration, and not to change looks?

For me its hard to say 100% what the old laws mean, as they were for a culture that is not mine here in the us. I know that many pagans used tattoos for worshiping gods, and getting a tattoo of something is at least for me a form of worship. We as christians are commanded to have no other gods before me, the first of the ten commandments. Also we could not even have an "image" of god on our flesh as that violates the second commandment of you shall not have any graven images, which I would say includes tattoos. I do believe that the ten commandments and jesus's 11th commandment(to love one another) are still very much law. but the last is the greatest.

'Do you not that your body is the temple for the Holy Spirit?' Apostle Paul

'Be ye Holy; as I am holy' Jesus Christ

Are tattoos and piercings 'holy'? That is a question you need to decide for your self.

this is like your clothing question ..
you want to please God in all your behavior ..
so we don't advertise the flesh or engage in sexually suggestive things ..
I think a tongue piercing is suggestive ..

Jesus himself said, it is not what goes into your mouth that defiles you ..
OR ON YOUR ARM, OR IN YOUR BELLYBUTTON ..
but it is what goes into your heart that defiles you ..

so if in your heart you are acknowledging another god or do something that promotes sinful behavior, then it is sin ..

2Cr 5:17 Therefore if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creature; the old things passed away; behold, new things have come.

Rom 12:1 Therefore I urge you, brethren, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies a living and holy sacrifice, acceptable to God, which is your spiritual service of worship.

BIBLICAL PIERCING ..
Exd 21:6 then his master shall bring him to God, then he shall bring him to the door or the doorpost. And his master shall pierce his ear with an awl; and he shall serve him permanently.

Deu 15:17 then you shall take an awl and pierce it through his ear into the door, and he shall be your servant forever. Also you shall do likewise to your maidservant.

BIBLICAL MARKING ..
Eze 9:4 The LORD said to him, “Go through the midst of the city, even through the midst of Jerusalem, and put a mark on the foreheads of the men who sigh and groan over all the abominations which are being committed in its midst.”

Rev 9:4 They were told not to hurt the grass of the earth, nor any green thing, nor any tree, but only the men who do not have the seal of God on their foreheads.

good post ..
I would say it like this ..
is the tattoo or piercing unholy ???

some things are neither holy or unholy ..
what is unholy is what we want to avoid ..
what is holy is what we want to strive for ..

perhaps you will explain to her what is unholy ..

In most cases I would assume that the intent of the tattoo or piercing is personal expression.
Personally, I have no issue with it, and have not read any scripture that denounces it.

The main point is that any body markings should have a sensible meaning and espouse virtue.
i.e. Mom (or perhaps the Navy vessel you served on) or your belt level in Gung Fu

The only way for her to know what is 'Holy' is to get to know God...

If you really want a tattoo why not get something that reminds you of the Lord? or something biblical? Making yourself look nice isnt a bad thing as long as you dont become prideful madly in love with yourself !

Good idea! I could get a Biblical sign or something Biblical as a tattoo. But I've been wondering that what is the adorning sin? Doesn't the Bible say that we can't adorn ourselves, like put some jewelry, plaits, etc? Doesn't adorning mean making yourself look nice then?

How you survive a session of 'truthful self judgement' before God is between you and God. As for me, I couldn't justify getting tattoos or piercings before God. Scripture is pretty clear on the subject. The bottom line I guess is that the 'ark of the covenant' was a holy dwelling place of God. Nobody was permitted to mark it! Our bodies are now that dwelling place of God.

Lev 19:28 You shall not make any cuts on your body for the dead or tattoo yourselves: I am the Lord.
1 Cor 6:19-20 Or do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you, whom you have from God? You are not your own, for you were bought with a price. So glorify God in your body.
1 Tim 2:9 Likewise also that women should adorn themselves in respectable apparel, with modesty and self-control, not with braided hair and gold or pearls or costly attire. (how much more a man! as he is not supposed to be the one who has to dress attractively ;)).

I have some tattoos, but just because I have them doesn't make them right. I could be sinning in getting them.

...But it doesn't seem so. Granted, my tattoos are tame (Norman Rockwell signature, tattoo of the three theological virtues, Pierre from the Maurice Sendak book, basic geometric images with no meaning).

Tattoos and piercings in general aren't sins (as a Catholic, there's at least no mention of these in the Catechism). However, content and modesty are still important. For instance having "Norman Rockwell" on my arm because I love the artist's work isn't bad. If I got a tattoo that read "God is dead" then it's a new issue for obvious reasons.

Getting a piercing isn't a sin. If someone wanted to get a nose stud, that should be OK. If someone wanted to get a piercing their because it's painful and they get sexually stimulated from it, then it becomes a problem, but in the realm of lust. If a teenager gets a nose stud after the parents tell her "no," then it's also a problem as it is in the realm of disobeying her parents.

There are different perspectives regarding piercings and tattoos because of verses like Leviticus 19:28 or 1 Corinthians 6:19-20. Often, the debate becomes whether it is a definite demand or a demand against paganism...and that's a fair discussion.

I only know of ear piercing for slaves in the first testament. Research it if you are truly serious.

I, myself, have no tats or piercings. (only scars)

When I was a child, I spoke as a child.

Okay. I have a tongue piercing because it's in fashion, and it's quite Lady GaGa-like, and I like Lady GaGa. But do you think that a polar bear is a good animal in Christianity, or can polar bear mean something evil? Polar bear is my spirit animal. And what ab0ut the Slytherin house symbol? Can the Slytherin house symbol be evil because it has a picture of a snake, or is it still okay because Harry Potter stuff are only 100% fiction and not Wicca, Pagan, etc. And what about a tattoo about the crush or boyfriend or husband or loved man?

You're getting into too many subjects for me to even really begin. I'm not sure what you're asking regarding spirit animals and Harry Potter and tattoos about crushes and so forth.

Regarding the spirit animal, it seems harmless and nice and fun, but it's a concept that ought to be rejected. Not because it originated from paganism, but because it continues to be a pagan practice as it exchanges God, guardian angels, and His word with something unrelated to Him. Any exchange of God where He belongs is unhealthy.

In my opinion, Harry Potter is only a fictional story -- it's fantasy, not intended to be anything more than that. However, treating it like something real, making it real, this sort of thing strangely can lead to false religious practices (or maybe it already has). It might sound a bit too "Boy Who Cried Wolf" when expressing concern with Harry Potter, but when it is treated as a real sort of entity, then that can be a real problem. I tend to disagree with my fellow Christians when they express that Harry Potter is evil because it promotes witchcraft, but just because I disagree that it only does that doesn't mean they are wrong about it 100% of the time...though that is the fault of the individual.

Tattoos in tribute to husbands/wives/loved ones, etc...I see no harm in it. Tattoos about crushes...not sinful, but probably pretty dumb as crushes can fade and then you may be stuck with something you really regret.

Paul words are more of a request that he wished to be honored ..
what you need to understand is synagogues were for reading and teaching scripture (with questions also asked) the women were not allowed to speak .. and in the Temple, were not even allowed past the women's court ..

1Cr 14:34 The women are to keep silent in the churches; for they are not permitted to speak, but are to subject themselves, just as the Law also says.
1Cr 14:35 If they desire to learn anything, let them ask their own husbands at home; for it is improper for a woman to speak in church.

so Paul is bringing something BRAND NEW .. Christian Church where women are allowed in .. but I think he was trying to slowly bring this change so both men and women accepted this new Church of equal spirits .. and hence asked them still not to speak, and by no means bring a lot of attention to them being there ..

1Ti 2:9 Likewise, I want women to adorn themselves with proper clothing, modestly and discreetly, not with braided hair and gold or pearls or costly garments,
1Ti 2:10 but rather by means of good works, as is proper for women making a claim to godliness.
1Ti 2:11 A woman must quietly receive instruction with entire submissiveness.
1Ti 2:12
But I do not allow a woman to teach or exercise authority over a man, but to remain quiet.

so it means that we shouldn't be like spoiled snobs that put expensive clothes and expensive jewelry etc? Is it still okay if I dress like an anime character (my clothes are not expensive but I do have a Hard Rock Cafe shirt that has fake diamonds and it costed 31 euros), and I dye my hair and I dye a green streak on my hair, and I have piercings?

first you ask this: "is it against God" ???
if not, then you ask this:
is it just because I like it or is it vanity ???
it's all about your hearts motives (kevenah) ..
if it is just because you like that style, there is no problem ..
but ego is our biggest enemy .. and something we always need to watch for ..

a Christian's goal is to have a heart of pure motives ..
and a clear conscious of honesty of our hearts motives ..
so PROTECT your heart from that which can defile it ..

BTW: I have a Hard Rock Copenhagen t-shirt ..
