Ok Let's Talk About It...pierced Ears And Tattoos?

This is kinda like the debates/discussions I used to have about rock music way back in the seventies when I got saved, but let's go for it.

WHY or WHY NOT is it acceptable?

I only ask that everyone keep it civil and treat each other and each other's views and opinion with respect. Those who cannot adhere to that rule should excuse themselves from the conversation now.

Re. tattoos, if the design is faith based, they can be very effective conversation-starters and testimony tools.

Blessings.

I would imagine their are some that are still convicted about it. If so then it obviously isn't for them. Personally, I do not have any tat's (yet) but do not see an issue with it in most cases.

I would say no, it is not okay; yes it is 'Old Testament' (we all know the scripture)

The question one has to ask one's self is this: how does said 'action' keep me separated and Holy and an example 'LIKE' Christ? Is it 'okay' or is it my flesh that is coaxing me to believe it is okay to do said action (fill in the blank).

Usually it is our flesh-and we will battle it until death. Some battles are small-but are any 'insignificant' to God?

Sin....is sin....is sin.... is sin....is sin....is sin.....

Err on the side of "not sin" and teach likewise so you are not in danger of condemnation.

Could not the same arguments be made against television, jewelry, makeup, and pretty much everything that falls short of living in a monastery?

Romans 14:22-23
Mounce Reverse-Interlinear New Testament (MOUNCE)
22 The faith that you have, keep as your own conviction before God. Blessed is the one who has no reason to condemn himself for what he approves. 23 But the one who doubts is condemned if he eats, because his eating is not from faith; and whatever is not from faith is sin.

Do you shave? :)

So as long as I have faith that going to the bar and drinking like a fish on Fridays only is okay, it's okay to do?

Like if I get a tattoo that shows my faith as long as I believe it is okay-oh it's fine then. You win, debate over. I agree.

Is this a rhetorical question? You have been asked three things and glibly replied.
I believe farouk's point was that the same verse in the OT that says not to get tattooed also says don't shave your sideburns off and always build your houses with parapeted roofs, and never wear garments of two different materials.

IF we're NOT under the written laws of the OT/OC then what exactly is the problem with tattoos or pierced ears? Your initial reply indicates a question we must ask ourselves, but why that question. A Christian is a person who's HEART is circumcised, NOT his flesh.

I tend to doubt that ANYTHING is insignificant to God.

Well, I think you've broadly expressed well what I meant!

Romans and Galatians make it clear that the New Testament believer is not under the law. But how many newcomers to local churches have been policed by 'rules and regulations' that are not actually in the New Testament?

The adolescent young man who pierces his ears, like his friends his age do as well, should feel welcome in a local church.

The young woman who has a Bible ref. tattooed on her wrist shouldn't be persecuted by well meaning 'correct' people.

(Two cents'.)

Personally I grew up in the '50s and a tattoo was something we saw on a sailor's bicep which almost always came with a sordid story of how painful it was and how it came to be in a dingy room of a house of ill repute, so for many years that is what deterred me from wanting one, but then I was born again and in reading through my Bible the first time I came across Ps 139:15 where it states I was "knit" together in my mother's womb, I flashed on that, I had seen women meticulously knitting something for a loved one and when they had discovered a mistake they would take it apart until they came to the mistake and fix it, Scriptures raced through my mind, Jn 3:16, 15:13, Rom 5:8, then I back pedaled to Ps 139:14 and came to the conclusion that Jesus made me exactly how He wanted me to be, each freckle, each mole, the shape of my nose the distance between my eyes, ...all were carefully chosen just for me by my Creator, a masterpiece of God (and so are you), ........................................................................what could I do to improve upon it?

I don't mean to hijack this thread, but since it is controversial I think this will be appropriate, if not feel free to remove it.

I concur, as born again Christians we are not under Law, but under Grace, it's a different dispensation and we can't mix dispensations, however we can learn from the different dispensations.

In the Book of the Law we have the Proverbs and I don't think anyone will dispute the wisdom gleaned there, for example, Pr 1:7 tells us the fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge, for years I couldn't reconcile how being afraid of God would bring me knowledge, but then I learned the Old English usage of the word "fear" meant, "to be afraid to hurt," I don't want to hurt my wife so you could say I fear her, I'm not afraid of her, but rather I'm afraid to hurt her, so, it's the same with my relation with Father, I'm not afraid of Him, I'm afraid to hurt Him, I've learned to try and base my decisions, my desires, my wants on, ...will it hurt the One I love supremely, ......Jesus summed it up when He said, "love God with all your heart, soul and mind and that's the "Law" babes in Christ need to be taught.

Sorry but I don't see this in Psalm 139:15, where I read; My frame was not hidden from you when I was made in the secret place, when I was woven together in the depths of the earth.

We are born INTO death and into sin. We are NOT made perfect nor do I think God has anything more to do with our birth other than He created life and told us to procreate. The original sin destroyed any perfection we may have had.

Self perception is another matter and pierced ears & tattoos are no different in my view than dying your hair, keeping it long or short, using makeup or adorning our body with jewelry.

??????

The word "woven" is the Hebrew word raw-qam', Strong's #H7551, used 9 times in the Old Testament, 6 times "needlework," 2 times "embroiderer" and 1 time "woven."

The word "frame" in your translation is o'-tsem, Strong's #H6108 which means body.

The word depth in you translation is takh-tee', Strong''s #H8482 which is used figuratively of a woman's womb and the word earth is simple to understand, "...and the Lord God formed man from the dust of the ground."

We are born INTO death and into sin. We are NOT made perfect nor do I think God has anything more to do with our birth other than He created life and told us to procreate. The original sin destroyed any perfection we may have had.

If that's the way you think, then what do you do with these, Ps 51:5, Ge 5:3, conceived in sin and born with a sin nature, and I didn't say we are perfect in any way.

My frame was not hidden from you when I was made

Doesn't that kinda refute what you are saying about God not being there when we are growing in our mother's womb?
Blessings,

Gene

From a pragmatic perspective, faith related designs make very effective conversation-starters. Motive counts for a lot, I think. I met a guy who had the entire John 3:16 text tattooed on his arm. I'm sure it has led to many conversations.

Self perception???

I read we are to die to self and be transformed into the image of Jesus Christ, so since we are being transformed into His image, the logical question would be, "Did Jesus have tats?"

The difference I perceive is tattoos are permanent and multiple ear and body piercings (other than a man having one in one ear to signify his position as a slave to his master), are a form of acupuncture, now, I'm not saying Christians that do these thing believe in the signification, but I'm curious and would like to ask the question, why do we follow the current fads of the world?

Please understand, I'm not judging anyone that has tattoos or piercings, if that's your thing, but I just don't understand the need to do it.
