The Gifts of the Holy Spirit

Question: how do you know which one you have?

God has created us with special gifts and talent that we should use for the Lord, and not the world. We will eventually come to know what we can do best and what we are not gifted to do. Some are good at singing others are not.

After you have been saved (repented and recieved Jesus as your Lord) you ask Him to baptize you in the Holy Spirit. Then the gifts can be released

There are 12 supernatural gifts of the Spirit, which he can use anyone at anytime if they are yielded to Him. In my opinion, it is not that 'we' have a certain gift, but it's the Spirit's gifts and we let them flow thru us as a vessel. He may use a person more often in one gift than another. Some may prophesy alot, whereas another may be used more often in the gift of healing.

hey that reminds me . i was thinking we all have a gift and it's like a swiss army knife and it has many functions . and as we grow in Him we discover the different things that God entrusted in us when we first trusted Him .

Hi Angelic Rose,

Unfortunately, the list you originally posted from Wikipedia was obviously written by someone who was coming from a very naturalistic perspective, not really looking at the supernatural work of the Holy Spirit in our lives.

Yes, the Holy Spirit gives us many gifts, some of which operate naturally. He also gives "gifts" to us individually, such as the experiences we might have in God.

However, when the Bible talks about spiritual gifts, it is talking about those supernatural empowerments that the Lord gives us to enable our service to others. Broadly speaking, there are three groups of gifts. 1 Corinthians 12:4-6 says there are different gifts, but the same Spirit; there are different administrations, but the same Lord; and there are different operations, but the same God. These three kinds of gifts are found in the following passages (though gifts are also mentioned outside of these passages):

Romans 12:6-8. These relate to the "operations" mentioned above, and have been called the "motivational gifts" - they are given by the Father to all Christians, and are the gifts that shape or motivate our life course.

They are:
Prophecy - more correctly "seeing" - the ability to see the supernatural reality behind things. The compelling motivation is to point people toward spiritual reality.

Serving - a motivation to service. For the server, the compelling motivation is to get the job done.

Teaching - the ability to present truth clearly. The compelling motivation is that people should know the truth.

Exhorting - the ability to lift and encourage people. The compelling motivation is to bring out the best in everyone.

Contributing or giving - the ability to handle finance and provide financial support. The compelling motivation is to meet the practical needs.

Leadership - the ability to inspire and equip others. The compelling motivation is to build others.

Mercy - the ability to show tenderness and compassion. The compelling motivation is to heal wounds.

(Note that even though some of these relate to what we would consider to be natural abilities, they are spiritual gifts and therefore bring a spiritual dimension to all these areas. Also, although there is some overlap with the Ascension Gift ministries -see below - they are not the same. A person might be motivationally a teacher, for instance, but not be an Ascension Gift Teacher.)

The second list is in 1 Corinthians 12:8-10, the manifestation gifts of the Spirit. These are what people normally mean when they speak of spiritual gifts. They are given by the Holy Spirit to those who have received the outpouring of the Spirit. They are not in any sense natural abilites, but totally supernatural.

They are:

The Word of Knowledge - a supernatural insight into the facts about a given situation. For instance, someone might be given a word of knowledge about the condition of someone's health.

The Word of Wisdom - a supernatural understanding of how to deal with a particualar situation.

Prophecy - a word from God to the person or people being addressed.

Healing - a supernatural ability to heal the sick.

Miracles - a supernatural ability to work miracles.

Faith - a supernatural level of faith that transcends anything man could reach by himself.

Discernment of Spirits - the supernatural ability to see or otherwise discern the presence of angels or demons.

Speaking in tongues - the supernatural ability to speak in languages (either earthly or heavenly) that have not been learned by the speaker.

Interpretation of tongues - the supernatural ability to translate a message given in tongues into the language spoken by the hearers.

The third group of gifts ("administrations" in the passage above) are found in Ephesians 4:11. They are also called Ascension Gift Ministries or 5-Fold Ministry Gifts. They are given by Jesus after His resurrection, and are only given to some of God's people - although everyone, even if not called as an Ascension Gift ministry, will find themselves drawn toward one or more of these areas.

They are:

Apostle - a pioneer and foundation layer sent by Christ to establish the church.

Prophet - one who brings the message of the Lord to the church.

Evangelist - one who leads the church in its task of reaching the lost.

Pastor - a shepherd, one who cares for either a local congregation or a group of congregations.

Teacher - one whose responsibility is to ensure that the church is well grounded in the Word of God.

Note that these five ministries are not spoken of as "having" these gifts, but as "being" gifts to the church.

It's a very big subject, and this was just a very quick precis, but I hope it serves to clarify it a bit.

blessings,

Lynn

Excellent Pastor Lynn .... This is for us all as Angelic Rose has not been here for a very long time . Thanks .

Very good explanation .

Pastor Lynn ..... I hope you don't mind if I copy what you have written . It is so well explained and well written . God Bless you in your ministry and we are so glad to have you here to minister to us .

Question: how do you know which one you have?

In the case of the motivational (Romans 12) gifts, these will be obvious in your life. For instance, the person with a gift of exhortation/encouragement will be the one who is always upbeat, seeing the best in people and drawing it out; someone with a gift of mercy will be tender and gentle - and people will sometimes see them as "wearing their heart on their sleeve."

In the case of the manifestation gifts (1 Corinthians 12), Paul tells us that we can actually seek specific gifts. Usually you will feel your heart drawn toward something, and as you begin to move in faith toward it, God will meet you and release that gift to you. For instance, you may feel drawn to pray for the sick. At first it is purely by faith, believing for God to touch and heal that person. But as you continue to move in faith, chances are God will meet you and release you in a gift of healing.

In the case of the ministry (Ephesians 4 - Ascension gift) gifts, you will begin to feel that God has called you in a particular direction, and that will be confirmed by others. In fact, others may even see it in you long before you see it in yourself. No-one should ever proclaim themselves to be an Ascension gift ministry unless others have confirmed it.

Dusty, you are very welcome to make use of anything I write.

blessings,

Lynn

Yeh, I would also just clarify that the only gift that is for personal use is one of the speaking in tongues... there is more than one gift of speaking in tongues, one for the individual, and the other is for the profit of all.

The individual gift of tongues (Which I believe is available to all) is one we use in prayer that builds up our spirit... the other gift of tongues is for everyones benefit.. this is the one that requires interpretation.

Besides that, all of the other gifts which we function in are for the purpose of everyone else.

1 Corinthians 12:7 7 But the manifestation of the Spirit is given to each one for the profit of all:

As far as us being directed by the Holy Spirit, I don't think this comes out of gifts of the spirit rather than your personal relationship with God. The closer we are to God, the more we are able to hear Him clearly, it is the Holy Spirit that brings us closer to God.

The Holy Spirit is here to help us learn more about Jesus and how to walk in righteousness...this comes through relationship and obedience to Gods word and obedience when God tells us to do something.

The gifts of the Holy Spirit that have been given to you will be known through you functioning in that gift. This is the evidence of the gift or gifts.

As well as that... it is great that we can seek after the gifts but it is likely you will seek the gifts according to what desires you have to do for the kingdom, and more often than not, those desires will be given to you by God anyway.

God will never ask us to do anything without providing us with everything we need in order to fulfill His request.

If God wants you to be a preacher, he will equip you with His word in a way where you will recieve many revelations of the truth that you can teach to others.

He won't leave you standing on a pulpit without anything to say... if you are called to preach, he will give you what you need to say when you need to say it.

The Holy Spirit is much more than the gifts He gives us... it's the annointing of the Holy Spirit that brings the outworking of the gifts, and not all gifts remain on us, but are given when they are needed.

Just seeing this ..... Thanks Pastor Lynn . This is a very good explanation of the manifestation of the gifts and I can relate to so much of this . Yes God does direct you into the path you should go . I have proved that over the years .

Just bringing this forward as it is so well written by Pastor Lynn and I thank her once again for taking the time and effort to post this for us .

Alot of Christians don't realize how important the gifts of the Spirit are. God uses us by flowing through us to help others and edify the Body of Christ. And some have needs that only the Lord can solve through those gifts.

The Gifts of the Holy Spirit

I never have been blessed with being able to speak in tongues...

Not everyone receives the same gifts.

There are different kinds of gifts but the same Spirit. There are different kinds of service, but the same Lord. (1 Cor. 12:4-5)

Each one should use whatever gift he has received to serve others, faithfully administering God's grace in its various forms. (1 Pet. 4:10)

But if you went to a foreign country and met some people that God wanted you to witness too, yet you were unable to speak fluently in their native language, then God may give you the gift of tongues for that situation so you can share Jesus and the Gospel with them in their own language.

Remember that tongues is not for believers, it's only given in situations where unbelievers can hear the Gospel about Jesus in their own language. On certain occasions it was needed in order to overcome the language barrier.

Acts 2:9-11 records sixteen different language groups who were present as the Spirit-filled disciples stepped outside the house to start witnessing.

1 Corinthians 14:22 Tongues, then, are a sign, not for believers but for unbelievers; prophecy, however, is for believers, not for unbelievers.

So maybe in the future, you may be in such a situation where you will share Jesus to unbelievers in their own language.

The Gifts of the Holy Spirit

I never have been blessed with being able to speak in tongues or been slain in the Spirit, but I am very much interested in the topic of how the Holy Spirit is revealed through us. I often think a "turn off" point to those learning about Christianity is this topic because of how its been portrayed in the media as something "crazy people" do. I truly believe that its something that has to be personally experienced to be understood. I did not understand until I experienced the Spirit entering in me, but while I may not speak in tongues or other more discussed gifts of the Spirit, I have found other ways the Spirit works in me.

I wanted to bring up the seven "gifts" of the Spirit--- I'm not sure if ALL Christian churches believe in these gifts, but I think it may be empowering to Sisters and Brothers to know this is the Holy Spirit working in you even if you don't speak in tongues, etc.

I liked how Wikipedia defined each of the gifts:

Perhaps believers would be willing to share how the Spirit has blessed them with a gift listed above.
I have been slain in the Holy Spirit 5-6 times. My last time was last week on Thursday =)
I do have the gift of speaking of tongues. I believe that God makes it available to everyone. All you gotta do is ask =)

You need to be praying purely from the heart and not just saying from your mouth. I have been slain more than 20 x and every time I come out of it I am speaking an unknown language which is very fluent.
It is a 1 on 1 personal time in YOUR OWN ANGELIC language with GOD and HE is the only 1 that can understand it. Everybody has a personal dialect if ya will.... with GOD.

If you will read the scriptures the believer spoke in tongues as the Spirit of God gave them the utterance, therefore this gift is of God.

Acts 2:4And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.

They did not wait months or years to grow. That takes time. We need to power of the Spirit as we are growing. Some believed and spoke in unknown tongues by the Spirit of God immediately. The only requirement is to be born again, that is, repent and receive the Lord Jesus Christ and then He will give you the gift of the Holy Spirit.

Acts 2:38Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost. 39For the promise is unto you, and to your children, and to all that are afar off, even as many as the LORD our God shall call

Acts 10:43To him give all the prophets witness, that through his name whosoever believeth in him shall receive remission of sins. 44While Peter yet spake these words, the Holy Ghost fell on all them which heard the word. 45And they of the circumcision which believed were astonished, as many as came with Peter, because that on the Gentiles also was poured out the gift of the Holy Ghost. 46For they heard them speak with tongues, and magnify God. Then answered Peter, 47Can any man forbid water, that these should not be baptized, which have received the Holy Ghost as well as we?

Acts 19:4Then said Paul, John verily baptized with the baptism of repentance, saying unto the people, that they should believe on him which should come after him, that is, on Christ Jesus. 5When they heard this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus. 6And when Paul had laid his hands upon them, the Holy Ghost came on them; and they spake with tongues, and prophesied.

You speak of dangers. The dangerous thing is when a person attributed something as awesome and holy as a gift from God to some other spirit other than God. Also its very disrespectful to speak of God’s gift as ‘gibberish’ . Some may think so, but the whole miracle of it is that God gives the ability to speak in languages we don’t understand. The Bible itself says the human mind cannot understand it.

God doesn’t cause confusion but many people themselves are confused about some issues until they have studied this out thoroughly, and many churches do not study it at all not do they want to. Now some may not agree or nor want some of the deeper things of the Spirit. He won’t force anything on us we don’t want. Although the gifts are a great benefit, a person doesn’t have to have anything to do with them if they don’t want to. But it would be wise to not speak against them. This is Bible and those who want the gifts and deeper things of the Spirit are told in 1 Cor 12 to learn about them and greatly desire the gifts.

Your comments contradict Scripture. Be careful.
I understand you don't agree. But I know what I went through :)
Now, I'm unsubscribing myself from this thread. I don't need someone to tell me what I went through was false.

That's as nice as I can say :0)
Blessings to you!

Amen! I stinkin' love you JG27!

If your experiences contradict Scripture, then be very careful, as Satan, who is very crafty, can mislead you.

Always believe the Bible before experience!!!

The Bible is very clear.. NOT EVERYONE receives the same gifts...so everyone will NOT receive the gift of tongues. Also, those few who do, will speak in known languages to unbelievers and share Jesus in their native language. Remember, Scripture says tongues is NOT for believers!
