Women Preachers!?

Women Preachers!?

Okay here is another one I had posted on my facebook site which did get a few replies but they were from males only who were NOT Christian. I usually post topics just to get discussions going to see others points of view regardless of whether they are Christian or not (hoping that my unsaved friends may get a glimpse into the wonders of the Gospel=) Anyway... maybe some here will have some insight because this is another thing that fascinates me and just want to know more about the subject and what others believe...(Ignore the part here where it says non-christian friends... that was for facebook only)

What is your take on female preachers? For my Christian friends - if you are able - use scripture to explain your claim - for non-Christian friends - explain in your own way. I think its fascinating to see peoples opinions on this subject. I have been interested in Pentacostalism for a Long long long long time - just find that and other Christian sects of the south and Appalachian culture interesting. Many churches accept female preachers or ministers - Included along with Pentacostal (Assembly of God) and other Holiness Churches here are the Episcopal, Methodist and Presbyterian denominations. These are some of the verses that are often quoted when representing the position of women within the Church. Now here is another...
Philip. 4:3 (KJV) And I intreat thee also, true yokefellow, help those women which labored with me in the gospel, with Clement also, and with other my fellowlabourers, whose names are in the book of life.

At Philippi, women were the first hearers of the Gospel, and Lydia the first convert. Instructions were given to labor with Paul in preaching the gospel.

In Romans 16 we have record of a number of women servants of the Lord in various Churches. Phebe (Romans 16:1-2), Priscilla (Romans 16:3-5), Mary, Tryphena, Tryphosa, Persis, and Julia (Romans 16:6-15) are mentioned as laborers in the Lord.)

There are some that do not and base their beliefs in scripture as well... (ie.“A woman should learn in quietness and full submission. I do not permit a woman to teach or to have authority over a man; she must be silent” 1 Timothy 2:11-12.)

so whats your take. any input is greatly appreciated! =)

I attend a United Methodist church and have a really great pastor. She is one of the the most Spirit filled people I have ever met.

This scripture addressed a particular problem and should not be applied universally.

I read (and also posted a few moments ago about speaking in tongues) and have read that this scripture may have been in reference to women speaking in tongues in church?

My Senior Pastor is a Woman and she was voted in by the congregation . Since she has been pastor our church has grown , many have come to the Lord and we have three morning services .

For those persons who may have forgotten, there are numerous women mentioned in Scripture that have been teachers of God's Word - both Old and New Testament.

You can look to several of them as listed:

Miriam
(Exodus 15:20)

Deborah
(Judges 4:4)

Huldah
(II Kings 22:14)
(II Chronicles 34:22)

Noadiah
(Nehemiah 6:14)

Anna
(Luke 2:36)

Priscilla and Phebe
(Romans 16:1-3)

We also look to Galatians 3:28 for support... " 28 There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither bond nor free, there is neither male nor female: for ye are all one in Christ Jesus."

1 Timothy 2:9-15 (King James Version)

9In like manner also, that women adorn themselves in modest apparel, with shamefacedness and sobriety; not with broided hair, or gold, or pearls, or costly array;
10But (which becometh women professing godliness) with good works.

So taking back to the Old Testament concept of spiritual clothing . be clothed with good works . or be known for your good works . not how good you look on the outside .

11Let the woman learn in silence with all subjection.

Hmm .. well it would be hard to learn if we were talking back all the time . this was an instruction to women who had never been in school and wouldn't know already to be silent and listen to their teacher .

12But I suffer not a woman to teach, nor to usurp authority over the man, but to be in silence.

but Jesus suffered Mary of Bethany to be his disciple and sit at his feet and when Martha said in Luke chapter 10, tell her to get back in the kitchen! Jesus replied ..

Luke 10:41-42 (New International Version)

41"Martha, Martha," the Lord answered, "you are worried and upset about many things, 42but only one thing is needed. Mary has chosen what is better, and it will not be taken away from her."

Disciples in length .. become a rabbi . Jesus said one thing that would never fade away .. but Paul spoke to a particular situation and particular culture .

Jesus taught of an authority structure where one served the other . so the idea of one usurping authority . is actually against what Jesus taught about authority . i say if people are given a capacity to speak . they should use it to glorify the Lord .

13For Adam was first formed, then Eve.
14And Adam was not deceived, but the woman being deceived was in the transgression.

Since this argument is based on blame . and God did not assign new roles until the humans started blaming each other in the garden . this is actually a cultural opinion . i.e. "in the beginning it was not so" '

since this because statement is not based on a scriptural premise according to the letter writer's definition of scripture . this is a cultural commandment or commandment of men . see colossians chapter 2 regarding restrictive commandments and their origin and spiritual benefit .

15Notwithstanding she shall be saved in childbearing, if they continue in faith and charity and holiness with sobriety.

We are saved by grace not works . what is this guy knattering on about here? i recall Galatians 1:9 this really sounds like another gospel .. but most likely .. because i don't come from that culture . so it was good for its time like a lot of the Old Testament laws were good for their culture as it is written in deuteronomy "this law i give you today for your good"

but it doesn't apply today . my suggestion is to look at the core of what is being said so that you can forumulate what is necessary for today . what God is saying today . God is not i was .. or i will be .. but is always and ever I AM .

hope that helps with your inquiry . and i hope your question was of a genuine nature . if you try to start a debate with me i will just walk away and ignore this thread . but questions and discussion are fine .

This is the way I believe , Michael . All of these issues were addressed to churches who were rebellilous and needed some order instilled and that is why these issues were addressed . We have to understand the time in which all of this was written .

We are lead by the Holy Spirit and our convictions . If we are praying and listening to the Holy Spirit's voice we will be walking in the path that is required of us . We do not want to do the things we did before we were saved , cause we feel the tug of the Holy Spirit . Holy Spirit is our teacher and our guide.

I don't debate. It was of genuine nature because I am very interested in what others say because I really didn't have an overall opinion because I really didn't read quite enough on it to make a decision. That is why I asked it. And I thank you for your input because I feel it is very important we as Christians learn from one another. Thats why I am on this board! =)

No it's just the nature of the question and the history of conversations behind the question . apologies it was not so much a reflection on you but myself .

Thats okay. I just posted this for discussion on my facebook page.. not only for Christians.. but for non-Christians alike to get an overall view of what peoples thoughts were. I am glad I was able to get a lot of Christian input because I feel it has helped me understand the subject in context a little bit more now.. since there are some who are adamantly against female preachers within the church.. I wasnt sure why or why not women should be preachers so this has helped a lot.

Well that women should not have a closed door on being preachers within the Church. I was leaning that way - but wasn't sure if I was right or wrong. I guess many interpret it differently .. thats why there are so many that will not allow women to become Pastors. I think that was simply said. hands are hurting from typing so much all day. haha.

John 4

23But the hour cometh, and now is, when the true worshippers shall worship the Father in spirit and in truth: for the Father seeketh such to worship him.
24God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth.
25The woman saith unto him, I know that Messias cometh, which is called Christ: when he is come, he will tell us all things.
26Jesus saith unto her, I that speak unto thee am he.
27And upon this came his disciples, and marvelled that he talked with the woman: yet no man said, What seekest thou? or, Why talkest thou with her?
28The woman then left her waterpot, and went her way into the city, and saith to the men, 29Come, see a man, which told me all things that ever I did: is not this the Christ?

Wonderful example GodSpeaks and when she ran and told every body . How amny people were saved . ? Was she not an evangelist ?
