Be Filled With the Holy Spirit

Ephesians 5:18

18Do not get drunk on wine, which leads to debauchery. Instead, be filled with the Spirit

How can we be filled with and thus empowered by the Holy Spirit?”

First, We must have the desire and faith. As with all of God’s gifts, so is the filling of the Holy Spirit. We need to truly want it, and we need to believe that God will give it to us as he said he would.

Jesus said, ‘If anyone is thirsty, let him come to me and drink. Whoever believes in me, as the Scripture has said, streams of living water will flow from within him.’ By this he meant the Spirit, whom those who believed in him were later to receive.”

If my heart and mind are filled with anxiety, anxiety will control me. If anger, anger will control me. If fear, fear will control me. But if my heart and mind are filled with God’s Spirit, my life will be filled with his love, joy, and peace and these will control me.

And what we are filled with is what we are committed to. If we are committed to ourselves, we will be controlled by our selfish desires plus our anxieties, fears, and so on. But if we are genuinely committed to Christ and make him Lord of our everyday life, we will be controlled by his Spirit and our life will exhibit the fruits of the Spirit.

Many believe that since they are born again, then they get all the Spirit they are going to get. Those that believe for example tongues passed away, it's hard to convince them that they also need to be filled with the Spirit. It seems silly to them, because the are born again, and must already have the Spirit.

Those of us that hear the Holy Ghost, and have trusted in Him, speaking in tongues know that other believes can have so much more. So, how to convince and what to do?

Be Blessed.

That is the question ... How do we convince them ? The only way is by telling them what the Holy Spirit has done in our lives and by telling them if they hunger and thirst after more of the Spirit , they will be filled . I think also it is a personal matter of emptying themselves of all else in their lives and putting Jesus first. By our own testimony of how being baptised in the Holy Spirit can be a personal experience where the Holy Spirit empowers and gives more guidance , teaching , comfort and discernment .

Why would people not want that kind of Holy Living ? It is awesome .

There are so many good threads in this forum to read and if people are searching for more of Jesus and His Holy Spirit , they can learn so much . But again it is up to each one to do the searching . We cannot do it for them

For those who are confused about the infilling of the Holy Spirit ..... let me try to clairify .

First we accepted Christ ... then we can be water baptised as a proclamation of our faith to give our testimony that we are going to follow Jesus and then there is the baptism of the Holy Spirit as I said with the evidence of speaking in tongues which empowers us and enables us , just as it did the disciples in the book of Acts to be better witnesses for Christ.

I would suggest to you to study some of the other threads as well in this section to give you better information about the Holy Spirit. I don't mean to confuse you at this time so take it one step at a time .

The Baptism in the Holy Spirit is an experience in which the believer yields control of himself to the Holy Spirit ( Matt 3:11 ; Acts 1:5 ; Eph 5:18 ) Through this he comes to know Christ in a more intimate way .

Baptism in the Holy Spirit is distinct from and subsequent to conversion , and is accompanied by the initial evidence of speaking in tongues just as they did on the day of Pentecost.

I also believe that while the H. S. comes to transform and indell us when we become a believer there is also a need of an experience that Jesus referred to as the Baptism of the Holy Spirit. . This is an experience of power for service for those who are already believers in Christ.

To try and summarize , empowerment is given subsequent to conversion for continuing the ministry of Christ. It is a vocal gift . It is to help Christians live out the commission of Christ as a prophetic community . As one opens their life to this new dimention in the Spirit a new power for evangelism and living a Christain life should result .

Please note and this is important ..... The Baptism in the Spirit does not come through water baptism . Water baptism is not the same as Baptism In the Holy Spirit.

The Holy Spirit baptizes us into the Body of Christ. We are regenerated, changed by the Spirit. He has done a work in us, in our spirit. That is the born again experience.

Then after is a different experience. Jesus will baptize us with the Holy Spirit. The Spirit comes upon us and fills us up to overflowing, and that overflow is the language from the Spirit

I believe we are going in the same direction because we have been talking about the Living Water this week.

I was also talking about being filled or baptized with the Holy Spirit on my thread, Rivers of Living Water

If a person reads that quickly it doesn't sink in and they think it says the same thing, but it doesn't. If they meditate on that awhile and ask the Lord for revelation, they will understand it's different.

Here's the way I like to put it : In that order.

!..... Baptism into the Body of Christ..... And that is Salvation .......1 Cor 12 : 13. We are all baptised into one body and filled with the Holy Spirit when we are saved.Every believer receives the same amount of the SpiritJews or Greeks, slave or free.... every believer receives as much Holy Spirit as there is to receive.... Col 2: 9-10...The presence of the Holy Spirit is what identifies us as believers "into one body"

2..... Water Baptism .....
Romans 6 3-4....Baptism ( Name Tag)... Spiritual Truth... Identifies us with the community as a Christian representing spiritual truth. All of us who were baptised in water have been a representative of Death to self and sin and now alive in Christ.

3......Baptism in the Holy Spirit...... we recieve power for service....
Acts 1:8.... we receive power in word and deed. we receive effectiveness in our Christian witness

" You will be my witness "
Acts 2:4 All of them received Acts10:45-46 Acts 19:6

Yes, Praise the Lord my sister .
We are both on the same page so we agree together . I know some of these scripures will be a repeat but I am sure that way they will be received .

Scriptures distinguishing between being filled with the Spirit and Baptised in the Spirit .

John 3:6

6Flesh gives birth to flesh, but the Spiritgives birth to spirit. 7You should not be surprised at my saying, 'You[ must be born again.' 8The wind blows wherever it pleases. You hear its sound, but you cannot tell where it comes from or where it is going. So it is with everyone born of the Spirit."

Titus 3:5

5he saved us, not because of righteous things we had done, but because of his mercy. He saved us through the washing of rebirth and renewal by the Holy Spirit,

To me renewal or regeneration is being filled with the Holy Spirit.

Romans 8:9

9You, however, are controlled not by the sinful nature but by the Spirit, if the Spirit of God lives in you. And if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, he does not belong to Christ.

1 Corinthians 12:13

13For we were all baptized by one Spirit into one body—whether Jews or Greeks, slave or free—and we were all given the one Spirit to drink.

When we accept Christ, the Holy Spirit begins a great work in our lives . The Spirit convicts us of sin , convinces us of righteousness , and dwells within us. No one can become a Christian without the gracious work of the Holy Spirit.

However people also ask why we should be baptized in the Holy Spirit and can we receive eternal life in heaven without the baptism of the Holy Spirit . ?
I would say that eternal life does not depend on being baptized in the Holy Spirit , for salvation is by grace through faith alone.

The Bible does not say the baptism of the Spirit is required for salvation . It does tell us that Christ commanded His first followers to wait for the Holy Spirit to come upon them

Baptism in the Holy Spirit is a personal encounter to be sought for a fuller dimension of spiritual understanding and empowerment and comes later as we seek the Lord for more of Him Every one does have different experiences

A little bit of history about the Holy Spirit.:

The Bible teaches us that right from the very beginning of time back in Genesis when God created the world , the Holy Spirit was present at work also in creation ... Gen 1:2 The Holy Spirit breathed life into plants , animals and humans ( Psalm 104:27-30)

The leaders of Israel were also empowered by the Holy Spirit by giving them power and direction.... example , Moses , Gideon . King Saul and King David .

The prophets were guided by the Holy Spirit and given messages for the people .

Isaiah the prophet reminded the people that it was through the Holy Spirit , Israel was guided.

In the N. T. , Jesus is the one who fulfils the vision that was inspired by the prophets . In the beginning of Jesus ' ministry , Jesus read a passage from Isaiah declaring tha tthe Spirit of the Father had come on Him to preach .

should be a Sticky thread to help those that are not taught the difference between born again, and "Being filled with the Holy Ghost" To be a powerful witness. GodSpeaks and Dusty have it covered well......

Be Blessed.

I started out with the Spirit being like a river of living water. More about the Spirit. Then mentioned how we can be being baptized with the Spirit.
Now looks like she is taking it from there :) If we flow together here, to all works together

Thanks and you can see how the Holy Spirit works through people as GodSpeaks and I did not know what each was going to write but being inspired by the Holy Spirit we have both brought forward our thoughts as the Holy Spirit led . I thank GodSpeaks for her threads and try not to be repetitive but also to write what I have been told to write.

I do really want others to also be inspired to seek the furtherance of the gospel and experience what the Holy Spirit has for us as we seek Him , serve Him and put Him first in our lives emptying all the garbage that accumulates and giving it all to Him . More of you Jesus is all our desires.

In the Old Testament the power of the Holy Spirit would only come upon them at the time the Lord wanted them to do or to say He told them to say. Then the Spirit would leave.

But now in New Testament times Holy Spirit can live inside us if we ask Jesus in our life. And after that we can ask Jesus to fill us completely to overflowing with His Spirit and His power comes upon us. He is always with us to do and say what He is leading us to do.

That's right and only cetain persons were chosen . But now because of Jesus Christ we all receive the Holy Spirit upon new birth and receive the baptism of the Holy Spirt as an added gift from God .

Amen! Its for whosoever. I'm a whosoever, you're a whosoever :) Everyone is. Whosoever will repent and call upon the name of Jesus will be saved and can recieve the gift of the Holy Spirit.

Another perspective:

When we accept God's gift of eternal life through the sacrifice of His Son, the Spirit enters.

But, to be fully used of God, we need to take the next step and allow God to take control. This is where the baptism of the Spirit takes place.

We're saved by Grace, but become fully His when we allow the Spirit to control our lives.
