The Person of the Holy Spirit

John 16:7
Nevertheless I tell you the truth; It is expedient for you that I go away: for if I go not away, the Comforter will not come unto you; but if I depart, I will send him unto you

The Greek word of 'Comforter" is 'Paraclete' and mean he is our helper and comforter.

He is one who 'comes along beside to help. 'The Holy Spirit is a comforter in all we may be going through.

This will probably sound funny, but being such bad weather lately, as I was about to go to sleep, I began to think about the blanket on the bed, the comforter. It comforts and warms us when we need it so we won't be cold .

And the Holy Spirit comfort and warms us with His love at our time of need.
:)

I love the analogy . Like you said " OUr Comforter " . The Holy Spirit is there 24/7 and in our times when we are lonley , our times when we don't think we can go on , our times of suffering and pain to see us through , yes He is that comforter and where would we be if He were not there . Me , I would not want to think about not having Him . Life would be void , dull and mundain .

It was so cold that night.
I started laughing when I thought about it and I was telling myself, quit laughing and go to sleep :D

As bad as it's getting I don't know how unbelievers make it without Him. Really they are just existing and some don't make it.

The multitude followed Jesus; afar off that is. Jesus told them about God and His ways, but didn’t tell them the secrets things.

He took the 12 disciples aside and explained much that He didn’t tell the crowds. The three closest to Him were Peter and James and John. Notice the closer they are to Him, the smaller the group gets. But the closest one of all was John, the ‘’ disciple whom Jesus loved’’, as he is known by.

The one who we are closest to is the one we confide in about the deepest things in our heart. That’s what Holy Spirit does. I want to be close enough to hear the deep, secret things from His heart.

Me too . That should be every Christians goal . It is so awesome . and reminds me of a song we sing ' You are awesome in this Place " Why would any one want to settle for second best when they can have the fullness of the Holy Spirit?

Why would any one want to settle for second best when they can have the fullness of the Holy Spirit?

I sure want His best. Some don't want to commit to Him 100%. But they won't be fulfilled like if they were totally His. They just don't know it.

John 16:7
Nevertheless I tell you the truth; It is expedient for you that I go away: for if I go not away, the Comforter will not come unto you; but if I depart, I will send him unto you

John 16:13 But when He the Spirit of truth, comes, He will guide you into all truth; for He will not speak on His own initiative, but whatever He hears, He will speak...He will glorify Me, for He will take of Mine and will disclose it to you. All things that the Father has are Mine

John 17:7 Now they have come to know that everything You have given Me is from You; for the words which You gave Me I have given to them;

Rev 19:13 He is clothed with a robe dipped in blood, and His name is called The Word of God

Jesus Christ is called the Word of God because God the Father gave Jesus Christ His words. Then Jesus gives them to us via the Holy Spirit, but the words of God are a possession of Jesus Christ our Lord, and He gives them to us through the Holy Spirit.

Jn 5:24 Truly, truly, I say to you, he who hears My word, and believes Him who sent Me, has eternal life...

Again we see that we are to hear the words of Jesus Christ, given to Him by the Father.

Jn 5:36 But the testimony which I have is greater than the testimony of John; for the works which the Father has given Me to accomplish—the very works that I do—testify about Me, that the Father has sent Me.

John was the greatest born of woman, he came in the spirit of Elijah, was a voice crying in the wilderness, and said that there was one coming after him whose sandals he was not worthy of untying. Yet even though John baptized Jesus and saw the Spirit descend upon him like a dove, John did not go a follow Jesus Christ. John did not become a disciple of Jesus Christ, although some of the disciples of John did go and follow Jesus Christ and did become His disciples.

John preached repentance for the forgiveness of sins and baptized with water, but did not baptize with the Spirit. There are some today, preaching forgiveness of sins and baptizing with water, but are not actually becoming disciples of the Lord. They are not following the voice of the Lord, but are depending on John’s baptism.

John 4:24 God is spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth.
Jesus said His words were spirit and life to us, and said that He was the truth.

Duet 4: 29,30 But from there you will seek the Lord your God and you will find Him if you search for Him with all your heart and all your soul... in the latter days you will return to the Lord your God and listen to His voice.

We study the Scriptures, but it is the voice of the Lord that is the Word of God we are preaching. [Rm 10:8]

Gal 3:5 So then, does He who provides you with the Spirit and works miracles among you, do it by the works of the Law or by hearing with faith?

Paul was amazing that the Galatians were quickly deserting Him who called them for another gospel. They had gone back to relying on their understanding and works of the law instead of leaning on the voice of the Lord. And John , even though he had baptized Jesus himself in water and was expecting Him, still sent messengers to Jesus to find out if He was the One he was expecting. We all, even the best of us, are blown around in the wind at times. So Jesus asked the people, what they went out to see, a reed being blown in the wind.

So it is that even the best of us, some days ‘say listen to the Lord’, thereby making Him the Word of God, then the next say, ‘read and do what is written in the Word of God’, thereby the Scriptures their God.

I admire John the Baptist. He certainly heard the voice of the Lord at times and did try to do what he heard even when it meant a great sacrifice. Still John the disciple was the disciple whom Jesus loved.

John 21:20 Peter, turning around, saw the disciple whom Jesus loved following them...

Are you trying to be the voice in the wilderness or are you just trying to follow the voice of the Lord?

I sure want His best. Some don't want to commit to Him 100%. But they won't be fulfilled like if they were totally His. They just don't know it.

That is so true . We either serve man or God . We cannot sit on the fence .

GodSpeaks ..... I hope you don't mind if I put the opening post from "The Holy Spirit in Christian Living " here as that thread got closed . I think it is important.

The Holy Spirit In Christian Life

First of all I have to say that the Holy Spirit points us to Jesus . The Holy Spirit is our source of Power in weakness . I am focusing on the writings of Luke and Paul .

Luke uses experimental language to emphasize powerful and purposeful encounters with the Holy Spirit. And here are some examples :

Baptized “ with the Spirit ( Acts 1:5 ) Filled with the Spirit ( Acts 2:4 ) .. “ Receiving ‘ the Spirit ( Acts 8:15 ) Spirit came upon ( Acts 19: 6 Spirit poured out( Acts 10:455) Spirit fell upon ( Acts 11:150 Spirit was given ( Acts 15:8 Full of the Spirit ( Acts 6:3 )

Luke tells us about overwhelming experiences … moments with the H. S. and encounters with the H. S. Luke is trying to write about them so that they make sense to us and recounting the empowerment to our witness for Christ .

Peter tries to tell us about the event from Joel in the O. T. It is perceptible and transformational . This experience transforms the disciples

Jesus calls us to be witnesses , but it is beyond our ability ; we need the Spirit’s help ( Luke 24:49;Acts 1:5, 8 )

On the day of Pentecost the Spirit was given to the church in a new way ( Acts 2:1-4 , 12-18 ) The promised Spirit is now here to help Christians . Tongues demonstrates the goal of the Spirit’s enabling – to be a witness to all people, empowering ( enabling ) experiences with the Spirit are to be expected as a normal part of Christian life ( Acts 2:38 -39)

Tongues was the goal as Jesus wanted the disciples to be witnesses not for their own benefit but for the benefit of other people . Luke is pinpointing that the H. S. comes to empower us for service .

Jewish believers had other moments when Spirit re – enabled them ( helped them by giving them new strength and boldness ) ( Acts 4: 31) Other Christians ( Non – Jewish ) also experienced the Spirit in tangible ways ( Acts 8 : 18 -19 ; 10:44-47 )

Spirit – baptism is an experience of empowerment that is distinct from and occurs after ( subsequent to ) one’s experience of the new birth . The initial evidence or Biblical sign of this experience of Spirit baptism is speaking in tongues. Tongues signifies the meaning of Spirit baptism ( see Acts 2) Supernatural empowering is dependent on the Holy Spirit . and for the purpose of witness in word and deed . Tongues signifies the inclusive scope of Christian mission in all languages and cultures . The only evidence of Spirit Baptism in tongues .

Paul closely associates the presence of the Spirit with power ( Rom 15: 13 ; 1 Thess. 1:5 ; 1 Cor. 5 :4 ) Power refers to the perceptible manifestations of the Spirit , including such things as miracles , healings and conversions ( 1 Cor. : 2 : 4-5 ) . Believers can experience the Spirit as peace amidst turmoil ( Phil 4: 6-7 )

The Holy Spirit helped Paul intimately communicate with God when he reached the end of his understanding ( Rom 8:26-27; 1Cor. 14:4, 15, 18 )

Finally there are 2 extremes to avoid – fear and fanaticism . Both of these can be placed in the proper context by realizing that all believers have a living relationship with the loving Holy Spirit .Our approach should be with an attitude of humility .

Jesus Christ is called "The Word of God", because He has been given the words of God. And we read and are to teach that God is One, but have these three personalities, [Father, Son, and Spirit]. So the Spirit draws us to the Word of God [Jesus Christ]. And the Father says, "This is My son in whom I am well pleased, listen to Him."

I have a question. Is it possible to have a relationship with the Holy Spirit and not know the Son?

Many will say, "didn't we prophecy in your name." and Jesus will tell them, "I never knew you."

It is an interesting thing about the gifts; that they all draw you to the voice of the Lord, but it seems that you might still be able to have them and not know the Son.

Prophecy is a gift of the Spirit, but apparently you can prophecy in the Lord's name and still not know Him.

Moses was a friend of God's, but there was a man that got a dream from God and was prophecing in God's name in the camp. Did that man know the Lord?

Nebuchadnezzar recieved a dream from God, and Belshazzar the king saw the writting on the wall, but it was Daniel that wrote, "for we have rebelled against Him; nor have we obeyed the voice of the Lord our God, to walk in His teachings which" [Dan 9:9] and "Indeed all Israel has transgressed Your law and turned aside, not obeying Your voice" [Dan 9:11]

Now if the Sprirt is does not say anything of His own, but only says what He is told, then the Spirit willing works as a line of communication with the Word of God. Isn't that because the Spirit wants you to know the Lord Jesus Christ, and not Himself.

If you have been given a prophetec dream, don't you know what to talk to the voice of God, to find out what you should learn from the dream?

If you speak with tongues because of the gift the Spirit gave you, don't you know want to talk to the voice of God to find out what the teacher has to say?

If I have been given the faith to believe that God can do miracles if I ask Him, shouldn't I still ask Him when I should use this gift of faith, and what purpose He had in making things the way they are?

The Holy Spirit did help Paul intimately communicate with God, and it is that communication with The Word of God that we are looking for. It is that communication that we are preaching first and foremost!!

Yet at times we [even all those that know Him] start preaching another gospel. We say things like, "If you have a question, pick up your Bible as the Word of God". Or we tell people to "develope a relationship with the Holy Spirit." These things sound great, but our message is the same message the Father has, "this is My son in whom I am well pleased, listen to Him." And our message is the same message the Spirit has, "Therefore, just as the Holy Spirit says, 'Today if you hear His voice, Do not harden your hearts as when the provoke Me'" [Heb 3:7,8]

Jesus said "I wish that you were cold or hot. So because you are luke worm, and neither hot nor cold, I will spit you out of My mouth."[Rev 3:15-16]

Some days I want so badly to tell people to listen and believe, and other days I get upset because of persecution and the worries of the world and tell the Lord, 'I am not going to tell anyone about You ever again.' Yet at both those times I hear the voice of the Lord come to me and talk with me. When He becomes far away is when I just kind of go to church on Sunday, read my Bible in the morning and think that was good enough for me, and when I put a bumper sticker on my car and think that I am a fine Christian. I can often sound much better as a Christian when I am doing what everyone thinks is write, than when I am listening to the Lord. Yet it is times like that when I no longer hear from Him.

I really like Dusty's writings, but I have trouble with this conclusion, "Finally there are 2 extremes to avoid – fear and fanaticism . Both of these can be placed in the proper context by realizing that all believers have a living relationship with the loving Holy Spirit .Our approach should be with an attitude of humility,"

First, I am looking for a relationship with Jesus Christ not the Holy Spirit.

Second, I hear from Him beter when I am hot or cold, so should I avoid these extremes?

Thrid, I am humble when I am listening to the Lord and doing what He says, not when I am pretended to do every thing right according to my understanding.

Fourth, when I am listening to Him, I often come across as strange as Sampson, but that is because I am all for Him. There is no fear then. Yet if I am not listening to Him. I can come across as clean as the Pharisees, but under it all are lies and fear.

Both Lot and Abraham were righteous, but Abraham was following the Lord and was considered His friend. So what is that like? It like having friendly conversations with Him. Here is an example, I give to you so that you will search for a relationship with Him.

I was driving down the road one day when sudden the Word of God came to me: “KARL, I’M A HOLY GOD.”

That seemed out of character to Him, because I have never heard Him brag.

“I DIDN’T SAY I WAS A HOLY GOD, I SAID I WAS A HOLIE GOD. I HAVE HOLES IN MY HANDS.”

Ha, Ha, Ha – I laughed, I had never thought of Him exactly that way. Then I started to realize I was the one that put the holes in Him and tears came to my eyes.

“KARL, I HOLD EVERYTHING TOGETHER WITH MY HANDS, SO THE HOLES MY HANDS ARE THE THINGS THAT SHOULDN’T BE THERE; THE MIRACLES, SIGNS, AND WONDERS.”

“IF MAN WASN’T REBELIOUS, I WOULDN’T HAVE THE HOLES IN MY HANDS, BUT IT WAS NECCESARY TO GET HOLES IN MY HANDS TO DRAW MEN BACK TO ME.”

“IF PEOPLE DON’T BELIEVE I WENT TO THE CROSS, WHAT GOOD IS THE HOLES IN MY HANDS TO THEM?”

“KARL I TELL YOU TRUELY, IF ANYONE DOESN’T BELIEVE IN MIRACLES, SIGNS, AND WONDERS, THEY DON’T BELIEVE IN THE HOLES IN MY HANDS. THEY DON’T BELIEVE I WENT TO THE CROSS. THEY DON’T BELIEVE I AM A HOLIE GOD AND THEY ARE NOT OF ME.”

So I told Him, “Wow, I guess we really tear you up.”

HA, HA, HA – I HEARD HIM LAUGH

Then He reminded me of a teaching He had recently given me:

“THE VERY THINGS THAT MAKE YOU LAUGH WILL MAKE YOU CRY ONE DAY! --- AND USUALLY IT’S YOUR KIDS.”

I find it hard to follow what you are trying to say at times. I guess we are just not on the same page :)
Since we are not really focused going the same direction on this, I'd suggest you start a thead and entitle it whatever the subject you want to talk about and others will join in the discussion.

God bless

GodSpeaks:

You started this thread with:

"Do You Know the Person of the Holy Spirit?

The Holy Spirit is not a force or energy, although he has power. He is a PERSON so we should get to know Him."

The point is that the Holy Spirit wants us to follow and get to know Jesus Christ [the Word of God]. That is why the Spirit only says what Jesus Christ [the Word of God] tells Him and does not speak of Himself. The Holy Spirit is not looking for you to get to know Him, but the Lord. Yet we tell people to get to know the Spirit.

So why are we both not on the same page?

I'm sure you already know the answer to that, since you said it yourself on every post lately trying to debate different issues.

But the most obvious was on this last post which is the very subject of the whole thread. We aren't on the same page because

I said
He is a PERSON so we should get to know Him.

And you said
The Holy Spirit is not looking for you to get to know Him

So its quite plain. :)

Originally I was thinking we were on the same page. So I was trying to agree with you and support what you were writing. Then I noticed that there was something we were not seeing alike. So I wound up taking it to the Lord. He pointed out something I had not understood before. He gave me a teaching on John the Baptist. Pointing out the John was looking for the Christ but when Jesus Christ showed up John didn't looked to follow Jesus Christ even though the Spirit descended upon Jesus.

There are those today that are looking for a relationship with the Spirit, but the Spirit is trying to lead us into a relationship with Jesus Christ. It seems like the same thing, but there is a difference. There are those that heal the sick, by the power of the Spirit, cast out demons, by the power or the Spirits, and prophecy by the power of the Spirit, but Jesus is going to tell them, "I never knew you." This is an important difference.

Balaam heard prophecy, but still had to have a talking Donkey point out the One with the sword standing in his path.

There is the tree of knowledge of good and evil, and also the tree of life in the garden.

God is one, but if knowing the Spirit was the same thing as know the Lord Jesus Christ, then why is the Spirit trying to lead you to Christ, and draw you close to Christ? We are to be led by the Spirit, but where is the Spirit going to led us if not to Jesus Christ?SO we are looking for a personal relationship with Jesus Christ. That is what the Spirit wants for us also, and the Father too.

David wrote, "The Lord said to my Lord", so David was hearing the difference. Jesus Christ needs to be our Lord.

I apologize for not picking up that we were not on the same page earlier. The original post seemed fine to me. And I know we started to get side track on how to test the spirits. I had only originally just noted that we test the spirits, and that when I was before I started to realize that we are not on the same page. It was at that time that I had to get and explaination of what was happening.

We should desire the gifts of the Spirit, we should be listening, and we should be testing the spirits like it is written to do, yet most of all we should be seeking the Lord Jesus Christ. The Spirit will only say what instructed, and is not looking to draw you to Himself, but to Jesus Christ who has the words of God. So we are not trying to enter into a relationship with the Spirit, but rather with God through the Son. If we are listening, we may hear the Lord say to our Lord, but our Lord is Jesus Christ.

The Holy Spirit draws us to have a personal relationship with Jesus. We must come to Jesus, we must be saved, that’s what it’s all about. Becoming a believer is the starting place, but for those who have been born again we are not to stop there, which most do. Thats the basic, main part of the gospel, but not all of the gospel. We have to come to Jesus first to be saved. Then Jesus baptizes us with the Holy Spirit, John the baptist said (Matthew 3:11). The world cannot even receive the Holy Spirit of.

John 14:17
Even the Spirit of truth; whom the world cannot receive, because it seeth him not, neither knoweth him: but ye know him; for he dwelleth with you, and shall be in you.

But we are Christians and are to go on and learn other things. Like I have heard it said before, the Holy Spirit is the most neglected person of the Godhead. In the words of Jesus Himself, John chapter 14 through Chapter 16 is mostly about the Holy Spirit. The Spirit magnifies Jesus but He repeats what Jesus is saying, and Jesus wants to tell us about Him, as we can see in those verses. He was involved even in creation and all through the Bible from Genesis through Revelation. So its important to know Him and all about Him. Jesus is at the right hand of the Father.

Acts 2:32
This Jesus hath God raised up, whereof we all are witnesses. 33Therefore being by the right hand of God exalted, and having received of the Father the promise of the Holy Ghost, he hath shed forth this, which ye now see and hear.

Then Jesus sent us the Holy Spirit to be with us today, bringing to us all that is from the Father and the Son. Everything comes through the Holy Spirit now.

You are so right . There is not enough emphasis put on the Person Of the Holy Spirit but I believe there are a lot of churches who are getting back to that teaching . It is of utmost importance that we embrace the Holy Spirit as our comforter , our hope , our daily living, our guidance , and most of all our personal freind who talks to us every day , gives us encouragement and tells us we are special because we belong to God .

Jesus told us He would send us a comforter and that comforter is the Holy Spirit .

John 14: 1-4

Let not your heart be troubled: ye believe in God, believe also in me.

In my Father's house are many mansions: if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you.

And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again, and receive you unto myself; that where I am, there ye may be…

John 14:16

And I will pray the Father, and He will give you another Helper, that He may abide with you forever—

That helper or , we would like to call " Comforter " is the Holy Spirit .

Thats good if they are. Communion with Him is important.
