Why did Simon get the title Peter?

Hi I am notthe best to ask, but i am sure someone will know. i had to ask jesus the meaning and what I was told, being called Peter was a symbol of solid foundation, Peter means Rock and to biuld on Rock in those days was good as the house would stand for years. Simon was the rock and Jesus tells me it was also the faith Simon had to speak out when hearing the Spirit speaking. The Spirit told Simon that Jesus was more than a man, so he spoke it and jesus told him well done, it was on the rock of hearing in Spirit that Jesus would biuld His church. Meaning Hearing in Spirit and learning.

Jesus told me some other stuff, but the words are to hard to write just now.

Thank you brother T Man

Matthew 16:16

16And Simon Peter answered and said, Thou art the Christ, the Son of the living God.

Matthew 16:17

17And Jesus answered and said unto him, Blessed art thou, Simon Barjona: for flesh and blood hath not revealed it unto thee, but my Father which is in heaven.

Matthew 16:18

18And I say also unto thee, That thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.

The Question is did the lord mean upon my rock as the corner stone that I will build my church or upon Peter as the rock I will build my Church?

The answer is I will build my Church upon Peter why?

Matthew 16:19

19And I will give unto thee the keys of the kingdom of heaven: and whatsoever thou shalt bind on earth shall be bound in heaven: and whatsoever thou shalt loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven.

Our Lord and God gave the authority(keys to Heaven) on to Peter, now the Question is who did Peter give the authority (keys to Heaven) to when he died?

Who was Peter successor?

Here is what Barnes says.

Mat_16:18
And I say also unto thee, That thou art Peter - The word “Peter,” in Greek, means “a rock.” It was given to Simon by Christ when he called him to be a disciple, Joh_1:42
Cephas is a Syriac word, meaning the same as Peter - a rock, or stone. The meaning of this phrase may be thus expressed: “Thou, in saying that I am the Son of God, hast called me by a name expressive of my true character. I, also, have given to thee a name expressive of your character. I have called you Peter, a rock, denoting firmness, solidity, stability, and your confession has shown that the name is appropriate. I see that you are worthy of the name, and will be a distinguished support of my religion.”

Joh 1:42 And he brought him to Jesus. And when Jesus beheld him, he said, Thou art Simon the son of Jona: thou shalt be called Cephas, which is by interpretation, A stone.

The Question is did the lord mean upon this rock as the corner stone that I will build my church or upon Peter as the rock I will build my Church on?

Jesus was talking about himself. Just like when they were in the temple and Jesus said, “Destroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it up.”

Joh 2:19 Jesus answered and said unto them, Destroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it up.

Mat 16:18 And I say also unto thee, That thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.

“this temple”
“this rock”
In both cases Jesus was refering to himself.

Eph 2:20 And are built upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Jesus Christ himself being the chief corner stone;

The apostles and prophets are the foundation, but Christ is the chief corner stone.
That is the rock the church is built upon.

If it wasn't for the next statement from our Lord and God I would agree

We Know Christ is the corner stone but In modern Greek, the name Peter Petros means "small stone" and Petra means "stone." In Aramaic only had one word for rock, kephas (which is why Peter is often called Cephas in the Bible). The word Kephas in Aramaic means "huge rock."

Anyways Christ gave Peter this name knowing he would be the first rock upon the the corner stone the builders rejected, and through Peter by Christ authority was given the keys to heaven that's why our Lord said in:

Matthew 16:19

19And I will give unto thee the keys of the kingdom of heaven: and whatsoever thou shalt bind on earth shall be bound in heaven: and whatsoever thou shalt loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven.

This is the case but my problem is that Paul appointed Linus as Peter successor which
lead to the roman Catholic Church Authority, Did Paul have Peter blessing to receive the keys to Heaven that was given to Peter by our Lord? or did Paul use his own initiative.John was still alive at that time why wasn't he the successor?

If Paul had received the keys of Heaven from Peter then it would be said without a doubt that the Church of God is the Roman Catholic.

Did Paul need Peter permission? as he was ordained by Christ (no doubt), then it was Christ whom appointed Linus through Paul to become the bishop. Then the Roman Catholic Church is the rock upon the cornerstone.

The Church is solid but fallible is all mankind.

So if they did use the word “Kephas” in the original manuscript, it would have been because they had no other choice.

No doubt but that fact still remains, that Christ is the corner stone that the builders rejected and when Christ was talking to Simon named Peter for this very purpose He said "upon this rock I will build my Church". Now if lord Jesus was speaking in singular terms it would mean upon this rock (Himself as the corner stone) but He was speaking in plural terms, pointing His intention at Peter in the presence of the other disciples saying upon this rock meaning Peter I will build my Church. Simon was titled Peter from the beginning to be the rock that builds upon the corner stone.

He was speaking to His disciples while Peter was the central subject.

Look at this as if you were there, Peter being pulled out of the group and standing on the right hand side of Lord Jesus as He addresses the group.

18And I say also unto thee, That thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.19And I will give unto thee(Peter) the keys of the kingdom of heaven: and whatsoever thou(Peter) shalt bind on earth shall be bound in heaven: and whatsoever thou(Peter) shalt loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven.

Lord Jesus was addressing the group about Peter.(Plural terms)

The disciples then understood why Peter would be the rock upon the cornerstone of Christ who would build His Church as their leader. (Appointed by Christ and endorsed in verse 19).

If Christ was speaking in "singular terms" then He would addressed His disciples without Peter being the central subject. Singularly He would of said "upon my cornerstone I will build my Church",which is true but without Peter being the authority of His Church on earth which is not true because the Lord gave him the keys to endorse His living word in verse 19.

I see it as Jesus was speaking to Peter.
Jesus answered and said unto “him” … not revealed it unto “thee”… And I say also unto “thee,” That thou art Peter…

Mat 16:17 And Jesus answered and said unto him, Blessed art thou, Simon Barjona: for flesh and blood hath not revealed it unto thee, but my Father which is in heaven.
Mat 16:18 And I say also unto thee, That thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.

If verse 17 Jesus was clearly speaking to Peter. I just don’t see the transition to him speaking to the group in the next verse.

Lord Jesus was speaking to the Group as a whole in verse 13,14,15,16,17,18,and 19 the group was still present.

Matthew 16:13-19

13When Jesus came into the coasts of Caesarea Philippi, he asked his disciples, saying, Whom do men say that I the Son of man am?
14And they said, Some say that thou art John the Baptist: some, Elias; and others, Jeremias, or one of the prophets.
15He saith unto them, But whom say ye that I am?
16And Simon Peter answered and said, Thou art the Christ, the Son of the living God.
17And Jesus answered and said unto him, Blessed art thou, Simon Barjona: for flesh and blood hath not revealed it unto thee, but my Father which is in heaven.
18And I say also unto thee, That thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.
19And I will give unto thee the keys of the kingdom of heaven: and whatsoever thou shalt bind on earth shall be bound in heaven: and whatsoever thou shalt loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven.

Yes, the group was still present, but it’s right there in verses 15, 16, 17.
Verse 15, “saith unto them” (Jesus was speaking to the group)
Verse 16, Peter answered Jesus.
Verse 17, “And Jesus answered and said unto him” (Jesus was speaking to Peter)

It goes from speaking to “them” to speaking to “him”
His focus was shifted from speaking to the group to speaking to Peter, but it doesn’t shift back to speaking to the group.

The lord never pulled Peter away from the group but directly spoke to him in the midst of the group.Peter in verse 16 answered Him directly from the group and verses 17,18 and 19 Lord Jesus directly spoke to Peter whilst being in the group.

I wounder why this subject has always been controversial? Is it because if it is said that Peter is the rock that the Church of Christ is built on, does it lead to the Catholic Church being the rock?

Who was Peter successor?

hey your welcome.
In Matty 16:16 Peter speaks using the Spirit the same Spirit we all have, the same spirit the rest had back then, Peter was the only one at that time who had the boldness to speak it out loud.

In Matty 16:17 Jesus says well done to peter, because it takes faith to speak of the Spiritual things over that of things we know in knowledge, Peter heard God in Spirit and spoke what he heard. Peter excersised the scripture we know today as Hebrews 11:1

In Matty 16:18 Jesus was clear, it was not Peter nor was it Jesus, it was Peters use of the Spirit.. It reads - 18And I say also unto thee, That thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.

Meaning When we all use the Spirit to live we are more than just people, we become brothers and sisters in Gods own family. Jesus was happy with Peter because he used this Spirit to hear and live. The Church jesus was building was based on us using our Spirit and The Holy Spirit that educates us all. the problem, we have is man made knowledge over many years have taken away the power of this scripture and replaced it with meaning that are of flesh and lame. We who come to God in later life, just except what we are told as this is its meanings and go our way.

Its not about a visable church we all see and touch, the visable church has no power, the visable church in the old days had rules and reg and laws according to them, Jesus wiped that away with His lesson in Spirit. There are other scripture Jesus showed me regarding the man made visable church, One is Lord Lord in your name we did this and we did that etc, and Jesus said to them GET AWAY FROM ME, I never knew you... These guys did many great works, yet Jesus says to them Get away from me ! The church in not of flesh, its of Spirit and living in that Spirit each and everyday of our lives.
When i Christian says to me "Christ has gone to heaven, I can't wait to meet him when he comes back" This tells me he/she is a Christian of the flesh, educated in the ways of men. For Me i see Him in my dreams everyday and I speak to Him in Spirit and hear his words as He teaches me. I do this in Spirit and not of the flesh, Jesus said what is born of the flesh is flesh, and what is born of the Spirit is Spirit. It has real truth to it.

Sorry forgot to tell you who was the successor, any Christian willing to give up flesh and learn Spirit values in Christ... We are all equil in Jesus as brothers and sisters, nothing more.

Forgive me if I’m just a tad confused here about what you are saying. It appears in your quote below that you are saying peter was pulled out of the group and was standing next to Jesus.

He was speaking to His disciples while Peter was the central subject.

Look at this as if you were there, Peter being pulled out of the group and standing on the right hand side of Lord Jesus as He addresses the group.

...Lord Jesus was addressing the group about Peter.(Plural terms)

But it appears you are now saying Jesus spoke directly to Peter while he was in the midst of the group.
I just want to be clear on what you are saying happened.

Being pulled out and standing on the right hand side of Christ is an expression of directness in conjunction with the group. to explain "plural terms"

Look at this as if you were there, Peter being pulled out of the group and standing on the right hand side of Lord Jesus as He addresses the group.
Just an expression of directness to Peter in conjunction with the other disciples, being said in plural terms and not singular terms.

Lord Jesus was speaking to Peter in the presence of His disciples and that's why He said 18And I say also unto thee, That thou art Peter, and upon this rock(Peter) I will build my church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it. This was said so the disciples would understand that this rock was Peter and to enforce this statement our Lord Jesus further expressed His directness to Peter in conjunction with the other disciples with verse 19 And I will give unto thee(Peter) the keys of the kingdom of heaven: and whatsoever thou(Peter) shalt bind on earth shall be bound in heaven: and whatsoever thou(Peter) shalt loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven.

If you have misunderstood my reasoning I hope this makes it clear.

Conclusion
I reason that Lord Jesus did direct this message to Peter in a plural manner in conjunction with the disciples. I don't reason He spoke to Peter in a singular manner.

John 21:15-17 So when they had dined, Jesus saith to Simon Peter, Simon, son of Jonas, lovest thou me more than these? He saith unto him, Yea, Lord; thou knowest that I love thee. He saith unto him, Feed my lambs. He saith to him again the second time, Simon, son of Jonas, lovest thou me? He saith unto him, Yea, Lord; thou knowest that I love thee. He saith unto him, Feed my sheep. He saith unto him the third time, Simon, son of Jonas, lovest thou me? Peter was grieved because he said unto him the third time, Lovest thou me? And he said unto him, Lord, thou knowest all things; thou knowest that I love thee. Jesus saith unto him, Feed my sheep.

Peter is the rock that becomes the members of the corner stone.
