Did Lazarus die the 2nd time?

Did Lazarus die the 2nd time?

Just a little question for those of you Biblically astute to share with us. ... .. Did Lazarus did the 2nd time?

Facts:
  1. Lazarus died and Jesus raised him from the dead.
  2. The following scripture says it is appointed unto men once to die.
Hebrews 9:27 And as it is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment:
28 So Christ was once offered to bear the sins of many; and unto them that look for him shall he appear the second time without sin unto salvation.
If this is the case, would Lazarus have died a 2nd death? It looks as though he was raised from the dead by God in a resurrection. Wouldn't this typify our own resurrection with the "dead in Christ"?
Now if Lazarus died only one death, where is he now? Would he be existing somewhere unknown to us as a long-living individual awaiting the return of Christ to set up His kingdom? Or would he have been taken away into heaven without having to die again?

This same question could be applied in the case of any others Christ raised from the dead. Jesus raised from the dead 3 people:
1. the only son of a widow from Nain (Luke 7:11-14)
2. the daughter of the religious leader Jairus (Mark 5:22-43) 3. Lazarus (John 11:1-44)

This is certainly not meant to be controversial. It is simply a matter of wondering. I do not ever recall anyone expounding on a 2nd death for any of these whom Jesus raised from the dead. We know that Enoch and Elijah were taken (not died) to be with Jesus. So we know they have not yet died. Another question that can be contemplated is: Will Enoch and Elijah see death?

My quick answers would be yes and no.

He did not die the second death which will come to unbelievers.

Jesus said that Lazarus was not dead, but sleeping and I would have to look up the Hebrew/Greek for that. Lazarus could have been in a coma.

The other thing is that Christ had not died and conquered death and hell hmmmmmm..... got me thinking a lot.

I will say GREAT question makes me rethink a lot about the entire story of Lazarus. Looking forward to others views.

I would say that lazurus did die and was raised. This was for a miracle. I think a miracle would make an exeption. In my opinion I would say lazuraz died again when his time to die came. This first death was his time to be part of a miracle that God wopuld work

Lazarus died (he was not in a coma) and was resurrected by Jesus to accomplish God's will. and after that I believe he died again a final death.

as for Elijah and Enoch, I don't think they have seen physical death, I think they are in the spiritual realm right now, waiting for the right time to come back to earth as the two witnesses mentioned in Revelation 11 (this is just my opinion, more research needed) and after that, the Bible says they will be killed. so I do think they will see physical death

what an amazing topic and great post!
these were so great.

This is something that is very interesting and i want to look into as well. I really like this point and think that it has an awesome point to look at.

Neither Enoch nor Elijah tasted physical death.

What is interesting too is that the 2nd death is a spiritual death for those who are already dead (hmmmmm....)

Lazarus died:
Joh 11:13 Howbeit Jesus spake of his death: but they thought that he had spoken of taking of rest in sleep.

Like all men he would taste death again as this body is a temporary shelter.

Yes, Lazarus died a physical death and was brought back to life and must have died again.

But that is not what "die once" means. It is a referral to the fact that everyone will suffer the loss of their physical body. This is in contrast to the spiritual death of our souls.

As for Enoch, the Bible doesn't say he didn't die. It simply says he was no more. Maybe God just didn't see a reason to tell us the circumstances surrounding his death - we simply don't know.

Elijah on the other hand is pretty clear, however, I would say he did die the first death as the Scriptures say flesh and blood cannot enter the Kingdom of Heaven. So, while he did not die a tradition death where the body wears out for one reason or another, he did suffer the loss of his physical body.

I suggest it was much like what those still alive in body will experience when Jesus returns:

1Th 4:17 Then we which are alive [and] remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air: and so shall we ever be with the Lord.

Elijah who was taken up in a fiery chariot into heaven and Enoch who walked with God and was not are the only two individuals who have been taken bodily to heaven without passing through death.

I think Revelation Chapter 11 has a bearing on this. God sends two witnesses during the time of Jacob's Trouble (sometimes called the Great Tribulation). These two men will prophesy one thousand two hundred and sixy days. They will then be murdered by Antichrist, who leaves their bodies three and a half days in the streets. They are then taken again bodily into heaven.

Some believe that these two are Moses and Elijah. My own personal opinion is that they are Enoch and Elijah as the only two who have never died. Moses, as we read in Deuteronomy 34:5 died in Moab and God buried him.

Our Lord Jesus called Lazarus out of the tomb, but he would die again. Have you ever thought that if Jesus had simply said "come forth" instead of "Lazarus come forth", then the whole of that graveyard and perhaps all the dead would have come out of their graves - such was His power.

God bless us all as we learn together.

I agree. Scripture does say, it is appointed unto man once to die; apparently that wasn't Lazarus' appointed time.

Didn't Jesus say in the word "thy brother is not dead, but sleeps, therefore I come to awake him".
I understand that death is also referred to as sleep in the Bible, but in this case Jesus clearly stated that Lazarus was not dead. If the people did not believe that he was dead, they would not have seen the work of GOD raising the dead for HIS glory. So I guess in a way I feel that he was really only sleeping.
I agree very much with the thought that two messenger's may be Enoch and Elijah, it makes great sense.

I could be wrong, but I believe that Jesus was referring to Lazarus' spirtiual condition. Some scholars believe that Jesus intentionally waited to arrive at the point where Lazarus would have been dead for three days, because the culture of that day (even among the Jews I believe) believed that the soul actually hovered in the vicinity of the body for a period of time after death and could re-enter the body and re-animate. Jesus wanted people to know for sure, without question, that He brought Lazarus back from the dead.

Lazarus definitely died and Jesus even says so. He was demonstrating the resurrection power of God to these people:

(red emphasis mine)
Joh 11:11 These things said he: and after that he saith unto them, Our friend Lazarus sleepeth; but I go, that I may awake him out of sleep.
Joh 11:12 Then said his disciples, Lord, if he sleep, he shall do well.
Joh 11:13 Howbeit Jesus spake of his death: but they thought that he had spoken of taking of rest in sleep.
Joh 11:14 Then said Jesus unto them plainly, Lazarus is dead.

again, Lazarus died. he was even already in the tomb for three days and was in burial clothes when Jesus called him forth. how could he have been sleeping?

Lazarus was sick and died, but as has been stated it wasn't his time. Could you think of the conversations that he had to have over the time he was in Abraham's bossom? I wonder how he felt when Jesus brought him back one minute he is in paradise with God the Father, the next he is back on earth looking into the eyes of our Savior. I question to ask when I get home someday.

Indeed!:D:D:D

you are all wrong. The answer is "I do not know", since i also would want to say he didn't die the second time but if i said that i would say that by my own words not the word of christ(BIBLE). Maybe he's living with us (immortal... that would be so cool) But back to the point. I think the purpose of Lazarus ressurection is not to make as if Lazarus is important or Lazarus is living with us as immortal.. no... the purpose is to "show" that He is able to raise the dead.

I said that because there is no more written about Lazarus after he was ressurected (But i raed that the jews are trying to kill Lazarus because he makes many people in Israel believe Christ, so maybe he was killed or maybe he's not) But i would not worry if i were him, since he believe in Christ.

Enoch

As for Enoch, the Bible doesn't say he didn't die. It simply says he was no more. Maybe God just didn't see a reason to tell us the circumstances surrounding his death - we simply don't know.

Actually the Bible does say Enoch did not die, as we find further confirmation in Hebrews 11:5 stating "he did not see death".

Genesis 5:23-24
23 So all the days of Enoch were three hundred and sixty-five years. 24 And Enoch walked with God; and he was not, for God took him. (NKJV)

Hebrews 11:5
5 By faith Enoch was taken away so that he did not see death, “and was not found, because God had taken him”; for before he was taken he had this testimony, that he pleased God. (NKJV)

P.S.
I was personally very interested in this subject, one reason being Enoch’s father was Jared, that’s my name! Spelt the same and everything! Does anyone know or know where I can find what the name Jared originally meant?

Genesis 5:18-19
18 Jared lived one hundred and sixty-two years, and begot Enoch. 19 After he begot Enoch, Jared lived eight hundred years, and had sons and daughters.
