Saul and the woman with the familiar spirit?

Saul and the woman with the familiar spirit?

I was reading in I Samuel 28:7-20

I had a question about the woman with the spirit bacause it confused me.
In 11- Then said the woman, Whom shall i bring up unto thee? And he said bring me up Sam'-u-el.

But Samual had died, so how did she bring up his spirit to talk with Saul.??
And I am wondering where was Samuel, that he could converse through spirit?

Any help or thought is welcome.

Thanks friends!:)

hmm, I am gussing this is bad, right? a bad spirit?!..
I would just love a better understanding of how or why, and why was Samuels spirit able to be done like this?

No, in this case it very clearly was Samuel, whom the Lord permitted to return from Paradise to speak His judgment against Saul. God is sovereign, and He can permit someone to return from the dead if He chooses to do so. (Think also of the transfiguration, where Jesus spoke with Moses and Elijah.)

However, He made it very clear that we are not to seek such encounters (Deuteronomy 18:9-12). If we do, most of the time the spirit that responds will be a demonic spirit impersonating the person who has died. In this instance with Saul, the woman's reaction suggests that what she was expecting was a demonic imitation - she was totally stunned when "the real thing" showed up.

Yes, Revlynn, this is how I understand this passage. The witch of Endor was terrified at the fact that Samuel himself had been allowed to return to pronounce judgement on Saul. This story allows us to see how low Saul had sunk. The anointed King now consulting mediums because he could no reach God.

God bless us all as we learn together.

Ironically, Saul himself had forbid this practice:

1 Samuel 28:9. And the woman said unto him, Behold, thou knowest what Saul hath done, how he hath cut off those that have familiar spirits, and the wizards, out of the land: wherefore then layest thou a snare for my life, to cause me to die?

We must never to return to a sin from which we have been delivered!

Galatians 2:18. For if I build again the things which I destroyed, I make myself a transgressor.

Good Day and God Bless

Wow!!!!

I really had no idea, I have just gotton through the first 8 chapters of the Bible and finished I Samuel yesterday.

I never really thought witches were real!?! I know the Devil is real but, I guess I could not grasp in my mind how she would or could do this thing!

Thanks for all the posts to this and it brought up another question in mind.
But, to me also, I do not see GOD allowing evil to intermit with his chosen Samuel? His Soul belonged to HIM as does all, But Samuel was a man of GOD, was it simply to allow Saul to understand what was going to become of him? How could a women of evil do such thing?

I understand the transfiguration on the mountain, but that was with JESUS, perfect and richeous, so He and only HE would deserve such a mangnificient visit.

Please do not get me wrong, I know it is in the Word, I am just beginning to learn and want to understand so thank you all for your patience with me :) and for all the wonderful help! I truly appreciate it and am thankful for wonderful christians that have much to help me with:D

Yes that is against the will of God for His people to use mediums or take part in a seance.

Because God allowed it to happen. He allowed Samuel to give a message to Saul and that message was that he was doomed to die in battle because of his sins. Samuel confirmed that what saul and the medium where doing was wrong, but God allowed it to happen for His greater purpose. Of cource the woman could not have called up Samuel if God had not allowed it.

Thank you Adstar. I really appreciate the help. I understand now that it is because of the LORDs will, Someone ask this to our pastor after her and I had discussed it and he said that we have three different spirit, a Godly spirit, a fleshly spirit and there was another but i cannot recall it, but he said that it was not Samuals soul that visited with Saul, but his spirit'/!? I cannot wait to read more and get to where it is explained about the spirits, cause in my mind I only thought we had 1 spirit and that was our soul.

1Th 5:23 And the very God of peace sanctify you wholly; and I pray God your whole spirit and soul and body be preserved blameless unto the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.

Spirit, soul, body.
We have three parts.

N2C, we as humans are three-fold beings: spirit (which is the part of us designed to be inhabited by the Holy Spirit), soul (mind, emotions and will - the "natural" part of us that is not physical) and body. I'm not quite sure what your pastor was getting at, unless it was that we can be influenced by the Holy Spirit, our own nature, or demonic forces. In terms of Samuel coming to Saul, as I understand it when we die our spirit and soul are separated from our body, but remain together. So it would be Samuel's spirit and soul together that came.

On your other question, this woman did not have the power to reach into Paradise and drag Samuel back to earth. God simply used her - and Saul's own rebellion in seeking her - to give both of them a powerful lesson. It didn't do Saul much good, but I'm betting that the woman probably never practiced as a medium again after the experience!

I really appreciate all the help on this, thank you Who am I , I will check those out! And thanks lynn, I wish I could have heard what he said, but just got it second handed so, I hate to say what he meant. But, yeah, I always thought our soul was our spirit. I understand God can and will use anyone and anything, so I agree .

It is a scary thing to learn that these kind of people really did exist, and I wonder if they are real today? That is really scary to me.!!!I cannot see why people do things or can do things that are evil like that, of course the devil, but it would seem maybe their consious would weigh on them.

I must disagree with your pastor, i believe it was Samual who spoke to Saul on that occasion.

1 Samuel 28
15 Now Samuel said to Saul, “Why have you disturbed me by bringing me up?”
And Saul answered, “I am deeply distressed; for the Philistines make war against me, and God has departed from me and does not answer me anymore, neither by prophets nor by dreams. Therefore I have called you, that you may reveal to me what I should do.”
16 Then Samuel said: “So why do you ask me, seeing the LORD has departed from you and has become your enemy? 17 And the LORD has done for Himself as He spoke by me. For the LORD has torn the kingdom out of your hand and given it to your neighbor, David. 18 Because you did not obey the voice of the LORD nor execute His fierce wrath upon Amalek, therefore the LORD has done this thing to you this day. 19 Moreover the LORD will also deliver Israel with you into the hand of the Philistines. And tomorrow you and your sons will be with me. The LORD will also deliver the army of Israel into the hand of the Philistines.”

The Scriptures say "Samuel said to Paul" If it was someone different then the scriptures would have revealed it. Also During the incident Samuel made an accurate propecy of what would happen to Saul the next day. This prophecy came true.

I Samuel 31
1 Now the Philistines fought against Israel; and the men of Israel fled from before the Philistines, and fell slain on Mount Gilboa. 2 Then the Philistines followed hard after Saul and his sons. And the Philistines killed Jonathan, Abinadab, and Malchishua, Saul’s sons. 3 The battle became fierce against Saul. The archers hit him, and he was severely wounded by the archers.
4 Then Saul said to his armorbearer, “Draw your sword, and thrust me through with it, lest these uncircumcised men come and thrust me through and abuse me.”
But his armorbearer would not, for he was greatly afraid. Therefore Saul took a sword and fell on it. 5 And when his armorbearer saw that Saul was dead, he also fell on his sword, and died with him. 6 So Saul, his three sons, his armorbearer, and all his men died together that same day.

So the prophecy came true. and confirmed the giver as a true Prophet.

I believe also that we have 1 spirit, i would be very careful with anyone who would preach to you otherwise.

Yes, N2C, these people still exist today. Before I came to the Lord (34 years ago now) I was a spiritualist medium. People laugh and think it's all hoax, but it isn't - it is very real, and very dangerous.

As Christians, however, we have the security of knowing that Jesus has defeated all the powers of darkness, and that He has given us authority over them. Yes, the devil is powerful, but He is nothing compared to the power of the Lord.

Sorry, the way I worded my last post may have made it sound wrong, Adstar, I meant that instead of it being Samuals soul that it was Samuals spirit, But yeah still Samual, only in spirit form, which is what I was confused on cause like u I thought we have 1 and that the soul and spirit is the same, but, i have to read this and find out.

lynn, yes it sounds really scary and something I hope to never see, !!!!!
