Why did Jesus call Peter Satan?

Matthew 16:21 From that time forth began Jesus to shew unto his disciples, how
that he must go unto Jerusalem, and suffer many things of the
elders and chief priests and scribes, and be killed, and be raised
again the third day.
16:22 Then Peter took him, and began to rebuke him, saying, Be it far
from thee, Lord: this shall not be unto thee.
16:23 But he turned, and said unto Peter, Get thee behind me, Satan: thou
art an offense unto me: for thou savorest not the things that be of
God, but those that be of men.

Peter had already recognized that Jesus was the Christ. Jesus had told him that man can not come to that realization on his own, but that God/Holy Spirit must reveal it to him.

Now Peter was objecting to what Jesus (whom he knew to be the Christ) was saying was going to happen. Peter began to look at things from a worldly point of view, instead of being Spirit led. So the ruler of this world (satan) was controlling his thought.

There are more than a few views on this, the answers given so far are really good. Peter was very much in the flesh when he spoke to Christ and the flesh is always 100% of the time anti-Christ; Satan can certainly manipulate our flesh and use it against the Kingdom of heaven.

peter shows you ,you can be controlled by satan, just like a puppet.many of us here are very common to this.some more than others.

I think Jesus recognized that Peter did not understand that all that Jesus had to go through was to fulfill God's will for His life. So in other words , I think Jesus was rebuking satan and says that satan does not care about the things of God but about things people think are important.

Jesus knew that Peter needed correction or rebuke and that it was necessary at that time.

we are told we are influenced by satan, take paul for example he was heavily under the influence, but when he understood, changed.
