By studying the Bible, knowing what Jesus would do, and what God would want. You know what to do by HS guidance and go through with what you know is His will no matter how hard it is for you and if you don't see it benefit you at all.
Trust that your works, based on what He tells you, will be best.

I am reminded of this verse in comparison:
Mat 6:33 But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.
As we seek first His kingdom and righteousness we are transformed in our hearts and thinking and He can freely bless us as we position ourselves to receive His gifts of love.This is a place of maturity in Christ where we can be used for His glory.
I believe we see this same principle in your verse:
Pro 16:3 Commit thy works unto the LORD, and thy thoughts shall be established.
As we trust all we do into His hand and move out by faith in Him and His Word our minds are transformed and we line up with His Word which is His will for our life- again a place of much joy, blessing and fruitfulness for His kingdom.

I find this scripture very reassuring that the Lord not only cares about our thoughts but knows the struggles that we have and gives us the solution to the flesh problem...Example: When I trust the Lord, I am leaving the decision of my next step in His hands...say, If I am being tempted (but I don't know that I am) and I believe that I am acting in faith according to his word...but if I then will evaluate my motives and see that they are "for me" rather than for the Lord and I "stop" my works and turn to Him...He will teach me His ways...I am then committing my works to the Lord so He can straighten out my thoughts and keep me in His will and obedient to His word...
Hope that helps...I love this scripture...I am surprised the number of Christians I have talked to that have never even heard it before. Once was when I was giving a missions report after a short term missions trip, I quoted the verse and then afterward someone asked for the scriptural address to study it further...hallelujah!
