I am afraid that today's idea of a motivational speaker is a self help, feel good about yourself ego boosting that is the very antithesis of New Testament theology. We are not to run around trying to improve our flesh or get rich by the worlds standard. We are to die to ourselves, die to the desires of the old man. We are to pick up our cross daily and follow Christ. The pharisees were excellent at whitewashing tombs- improvng the outside but never experiencing the change neede in the heart. There is more freedom in death to self than can be imagined.Only when one completely lets go can he even find the person he was created to be.

any "self help" that leaves Christ out is actually the opposite of self help... it is self delusion; any one that teaches that mankind can be "whole" psychologically or spiritually without Christ is anti-Christ, and therefore not only not a "good motivational speaker", not only not a good "teacher" of any kind, they are in fact false teachers.

What about 'motivational' speakers that are trying to motivate us to die to self and put God first and live lives worthy of the Cross?
I know a few like that, but because they preach under Grace and not Law, some people say they are false prophets. The things God has called us to do, He has given the Grace to do, so we dont have to flog ourselves into it, and it might not even be hard, Jesus said' My yoke is easy', so maybe if something is too hard it isnt God? I think the battle between flesh and Spirit can be hard, because we want what we want, but the things God calls us to, He equips us for. |

I prefer exhortation to motivational speaking. It encourages us to focus on God rather than ourselves. As Violet mentioned, Paul is a prime NT example of an exhorter.
